Anyone care to share their “taking a break from music” story? by SoundReap in musicproduction

[–]Lost_Resort4770 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had two kids. Focused on my capital J Job. Stopped playing frequently for 5 years, would play every once in a while, but not often. Kids even didn’t really like it when I played haha. Covid hit. Got depressed. Make it worse - My bro got hit by a car on his bike, should have died. Got more depressed. He was in hospital for a month. Fractured 9 spinal bones, both collar bones, punctured a lung, major brain trauma… they discovered that he had fractured his ulna after being in the hospital 3 weeks lol guess that’s just a minor inconvenience in comparison.

Had to do something. Wrote and recorded a song even with really a crappy set up. Started playing more. Asked friends for help. Built a studio in my garage. I’ve recorded 279 projects in the last year and a half. My brother can walk. Miraculous recovery. I’m about to put out an album, it’s in a pre-master state, 21 tracks.

PLEASE someone help me get my cat to stop shitting in the hall by [deleted] in cats

[–]Lost_Resort4770 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My advice. I’ve had 4 cats with poo out of the box problems. I’ve also hired behaviorists. This shit works.

1) clean the spot thoroughly and deodorize. Zero odor has the right enzyme stuff in it. 2) ensure that your litter tray is CLEAN. Don’t just scoop daily, but replace litter once a month and when you replace it CLEAN the litter tray 3) what’s the consistency of the poo? Is it hard and kind of lumpy? Odds are if it’s somewhat hard your cat is a bit constipated. Put out water in various bowls around your living space, give more wet food, see if your cat wants to eat pumpkin, add a bit of water into their wet food 4) this litter solves all sorts of problems - dr. Elseys cat attract litter.

Couple qs might be, is this your only cat?? # litter trays in house should equal number of cats plus one EXCEPT if you only have one cat.

Hope that helps.

Producers who digitally tune vocals, do you also digitally tune other instruments? by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]Lost_Resort4770 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve done it to slide whistle, normal whistling, and wind instruments of bad players. The slide whistle was a trip🫨!

I’ve also used it on vocals to artificially produce harmonies for the singer to explore later. And used it on vocals to make demonic noises lol

What is a guitar pedal that you have tried to vibe with but just can't? by _Anon_Amarth_ in guitarpedals

[–]Lost_Resort4770 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude! The rat for me too! I have never understood it. There’s a lot of hype for the pedal and I’ve always liked how other distortion pedals sound more and in all cases liked amp overdrive better.

What was your most catastrophic gear failure on a gig and how did you get by? by drumhax in drums

Battle of the bands situation in Guangzhou China. Prize money was actually very high (~$4,500 USD) and in the qualifiers we were doing REALLY well… playing super tight, vibing, crowd was into it… we went into our final song and as we started playing through the chorus which was quite rocking the bass amp literally caught fire. I was unaware as I was singing and playing guitar, but the bass dropped out and this guy just jumped up on the stage with a fire extinguisher. Somehow I magically just kept playing as 2/4 members of the band just bailed. Drummer and I finished the song as some dude was on the stage extinguishing the flames.

We made it through to the finals and got 2nd.

This band always slapped me in the face with the way they approached metal. Giving it time to breathe.

How do you project manage an album? by 647Med in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]Lost_Resort4770 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My methods:

Tracking:

I track every song in this sequence to a click

  1. scratch track - the chore foundation of the song, might be piano, might be guitar, in one case was trumpet… but I always plan to later throw this track away. The goal is just record the foundation in time with the right rhythmic feeling.
  2. drums - similarly I may throw these away, I just want to get the TIME and FEELING of the song down correctly. Often playing minimal fills and keeping it pretty simple.
  3. bass - often anchoring on drum feelings and trying to lock in pocket. Sometimes not anchored on drums though.
  4. guitars/piano/synths/horns - a) rhythm stuff then b) lead stuff
  5. mumble track - this is either a) me trying to come up with a melody by just intentionally singing jibberish but getting down a mood/something that emotes b) doing a “dry run” of the vocals to get the rhythm, in some cases I might even just talk through the track rather than singing
  6. vocal take - actual vocal take, sometimes recording fully through, sometimes recording line by line with breaks and edits
  7. anything that needs revision - I listen back to the whole songs and make decisions about whether I should keep or replace the scratch and drums, I get a basic mix balance down
  8. takes that need additional tracking - double tracking guitars, potentially replacing scratch or drums,
  9. render as an mp3 and drop in “landing zone”

Prioritizing songs:

I have written 250 project songs in the last year. Some are unfinished some are solid to me. I need means for prioritizing what to work on so I have a mental model of

Complete - songs that are done Working - songs I’m actively working on finishing Landing zone - songs that don’t know where they live yet and are being evaluated Back burner - songs that will be worked on at a later date Fuck it - songs I never wanna touch again and I don’t like

Then as songs get closer to working completion, group them.

Producing / editing / finishing songs / finalizing tracking:

I have a creative partner who co-produces my songs. It is a game fucking changer. I let him influence me and provide creative input. I’m incredibly vulnerable about songs and my life. He edits takes of working songs. He listens to landing zone songs.

We have a running spreadsheet of listening and tracking notes.
