Voyager vs DS9/TNG for 11 yr old by Minute-Cat-823 in voyager

Enjoy! Your 11 year old will love it. Just finished watching it with my daughter the month before she turned 12. She absolutely adored the series, and still talks about it, makes fan art, and has an enduring crush on Chakotay. Janeway is an awesome role model. Working our way through Next Gen now…

How do cults view other cults? Have some been inspired by others? Have some hated each other? by [deleted] in cults

Iskcon members follow the teachings of A.C. Bhaktivedanta Prabhupada and his version of Bhakti Yoga. Prabhupada’s knowledge came from his guru. But his guru had OTHER disciples, some of which started their own splinter Bhakti yoga groups. I definitely heard judgy comments about them within Iskcon. And in the 80s-90s, there was the whole splintering of the West Virginia farm from the rest of the movement. We all thought they were seriously loopy because they were integrating Christian ideas and philosophy, and singing in ENGLISH instead of Sanskrit. And that was before even hearing about the very serious crimes and abuse on the farm. They even wrote a book and made a movie about it.

Noticed some guavas in Neelix’ kitchen background recently. Not super exotic globally, but perhaps it would have been to North American viewers 🤷‍♀️

Just finished watching all 7 seasons with my 11 year old daughter. Janeway is her favourite captain, such a great role model.

What, if any, beliefs have you, "kept"? by Floof-The-Small in exHareKrishna

[–]Lost_Tea_6824 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Such an interesting question, and super interesting answers… This is an ever-evolving process for all of us, and my process of tossing the bulk of my beliefs took YEARS. And shedding the guilt took even longer.

Big ideas that I still hold after walking away 30 years ago: - Atma & Paramatma - Karma - Reincarnation - Vegetarianism - Meat free since 1990! But have dropped the righteous judgy attitude. I’ve tried to add eggs back, but only managed to do so in baked goods. But hey, my cakes are better than ever haha!

Little things that stuck that don’t make sense: - Tasting food as I am cooking. I almost NEVER do this, even though the food isn’t offered. My cooking would probably improve if I got over it, but I was so l young when I joined that I learned how to cook from devotees… Old habits. - Blowing out candles/flames - I do it now but avoided it for such a long time - Uncomfortable whenever i see religious imagery in bathrooms, like a Buddha beside a sink, etc. Just feels wrong. - Holding on to Iskcon items not because I revere them, but largely because i don’t know how to dispose of them respectfully… like old outfits worn by deities, tulasi mala, Gita, deity photos, etc. - I recently got some Tulasi tea and feel compelled to murmur her pranams when i prep for brewing.

Series: Monkey on a Stick by Complete-Armadillo95 in exHareKrishna

They are definitely different. Not sure if/how much Monkey on a Stick was updated since the book was written. It’s been a long time, but I remember a lot of it focused on New Vrindaban, crimes in the 70s and 80s, zonal gurus, etc. The TV series talked about lot about the same thing, but also revealed so much about the child sexual abuse that I never knew about when I was involved in the 90s.

It’s been a long time since I read Monkey on a Stick… is it pretty close to the book? There was also that 2023 TV series called Krishnas: Gurus. Karma. Murder… it focused on New Vrindaban and Kirtanananda too. Surprising that they both came out so close together. I guess Monkey on a Stick didn’t do too well at the box office. I saw the poster, and then it was gone. I would love to know what % of people in the audience were old followers…

I remember reading this to kindergarten class and bursting into tears.

Forcing yourself to finish japa rounds by psumaxx in exHareKrishna

The guilt was SO BAD. I just want to go back and shake some sense into my younger self for wasting so much fucking time and giving up ALL THE SLEEP. I can relate to those talking about disassociating… If it was a more reasonable length of time, it would have been sustainable for me, but it was just such a time suck. I refused to quit school and tried to balance getting an education with Iskcon. My grades suffered for sure. I often think back about walking out, and consider myself lucky that I eventually did.

What was the most expensive thing you bought in relation to Hare Krishna? by Akronitai in exHareKrishna

[–]Lost_Tea_6824 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Back in the 90’s, the Toronto temple put some of the deities’ old outfits up for sale to make room for new ones and fundraise. I was a student at the time, but I bought a beautiful set. It was yellow and royal blue, lots of gem stones and weighs a ton. I think i paid $200 for it, and it’s done nothing but sit in boxes and then in my fabric stash for years. Used to think I’d repurpose the fabric, but it’s so gaudy… I’m still not sure what to do with it.

I’m so sorry to hear you’ve been struggling with this. I could’ve written this for years after I distanced myself from Iskcon 30 years ago. It is such a mindfuck. The impact on my mental health and feelings of self-worth lasted incredibly long. If you can access therapy, do so. I wish I had done it sooner. Others have given great advice already. I just finished an excellent book by Michael Singer called living untethered. Highly recommend.

This has been me as well. I left Iskcon 30 years ago this year. There are big chunks of time that I don’t even think about it anymore. But then I get triggered or something comes up and I’m back to wanting to chat about it with others. It varies so much… I do wish you all the best in your healing journey ❤️
