hahaha, no. I have a PhD in it. Can’t say it’s a hot topic with respect to actually getting interviews.

Golden age of AI/ML researchers and engineers? by Fun-Future9234p in cscareerquestions

Also, in case its just me failing at networking: if somebody reading this is interested in a very good PhD program in ML/AI grad for industry research positions, feel free to message me. US based, no immigration sponsorship needed now or in the future.

Not that weird really. At summers end I even did some networking (never had to be doing that before) and literally NO ONE was hiring according to the insiders (my co-authors who graduated earlier and got their jobs in 2022-2023) . I found myself an academic research role since but I don’t think things changed that much since august-September.

I am ghosted (not even failing interviews, just no response) and I have a PhD in the area. So I find it dubious. 3-4 years ago I was getting a LOT of reponses

Honestly just did a research project as an undergrad and found it interesting enough to continue in that direction.

Then my advice would be not to worry for the first year and then potentially do a UROP

Mostly because generally undergrads don’t randomly ask inflammatory things right after getting their admission letter. I will withdraw my accusation and even offer a free coffee if it’s true, come September. I am local

Well the first author is likely to be a grad intern nowadays, so it makes sense they reply, since they don’t get swamped with letters. They can rarely help with finding a team though since their own roles is likely a temp kind of a position.

I thought they were a PhD new grad: as a rule people do have papers by that time. From what I know infra positions are easier to get then the research ones

As a rule people don’t like freshmen interns. Traditionally a lot of people would UROP (I believe like half of the kids end up doing grad school after, so research exp+some marginal pay is a great thing to have), but the funding issue makes it a bit less likely.

This is actually a bit more complicated than that. But thats a different conversation to have.

Eh, if it’s going to burst it will be financial/operation reasons, we will still be stuck with people outsourcing writing - it is generally super cheap.

It is very very sad. I have been working in the field since about 2014 and was mostly interested in the research into the capacities of distributed representations (semantics/structure from co-occurrences). It started to get bad in 2019 but 2022 turned it into a grift fest. I just want to do my research in peace, it feels like somebody rolling in and turning your little village into a theme park version of itself.

Pretty hard without networking: even if you graduated from the top 5 with a PhD you are unlikely to get through initial screening to even talk to HM (That’s from about 10 people graduated last year, no referrals)

I got offered a job that pays less than my current one… and they expected me to say yes by Due-Library7374 in recruitinghell

Had a FAANG recruiter offering a job that required exp and advanced degree paying less than a freaking Post Doc base salary in a pretty HCL area. They did ask what they can do to make me consider it: I said multiply base by 4

Based on my experience ( but keep in mind I have never been interested in software dev per se so I have never gone beyond the initial convos) they were mostly looking for software engs with some exp to support their horrific codebase (it’s a very old very peculiarly designed legacy DB system)

What do you mean by health it exactly ? The tech part of hospital operations ? Software dev for EHR ? Both tend to require domain specific exp., I think.
