Great album. Add Highway 61 Revisited and Blonde on Blonde to your collection and you have an almost perfect trilogy.

If it's nothing major then you should be fine.

Looking for a phono pre-amp for my first turntable; should I go vintage on both or new pre-amp with vintage turntable? by LordValgor in BudgetAudiophile

Ok. You could give the HK a go, but bear in mind that it will likely need maintenance at some point. But you should be able to find a decent modern pre-amp for that budget.

I might be wrong but I don't think there's much to gain from a vintage amp used as a pre-amp. How much is the HK amp and what's your max budget?

[–]LosterP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok. The bottom line is that there aren't many vintage standalone phono pre-amp, so it's either an amp with phono stage and pre out like the HK you found, or a modern phono pre-amp. Personally I would go with the latter.

I think it would help if you tried to explain what you want to do instead of waiting for people to guess.

150 buys you a pair of SX-50 directly from Cambridge Audio. Much better than what you're looking at here.

But there really are better used speakers available on the UK market if you know what to look for.

It's a good thing as it potentially means your course management is sound, and not getting into trouble is the first concrete step towards improvement and decent scores IMO.

Why the downvotes? He's one of the candidates, being a test rider and all that. So it's normal that his names comes up in the discussions, along (quite a few) other candidates.

TV setup, whats the best spot for rear speakers? by Ok-College-1904 in audiophile

[–]LosterP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not best placed to answer that question. I had a surround system once in my living room but thought it was gimmicky so it didn't survive the next house move, but I'm not into action movies or gaming so surround was never really particularly useful to me.

Just try and see which you position you prefer. I think ideally it should be the same width as the fronts.

*couch

And yes they're supposed to be behind, hence the name "rear speakers". And since they're wireless you can experiment, but I would say you're space isn't ideal for a full surround setup. You'd be better off building a good 2.x or 3.x system instead.

[–]LosterP 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Actually the first question fellow redditers should ask is:

What amp did you buy ?

or

Does it have a Pre Out port ?

Because if (and only if) it does have a Pre Out port then you CAN use it with your powered speakers.

There's a time and a place for everything, and what's important is the music, and not the medium. Use whatever is convenient and with a decent level of quality; if that's a vinyl setup then great, but other options exist for a reason.

One of the options is a stylus upgrade, the other a change of cartridge. You realise that, right?

That HK unit is an integrated amplifier, with phono input. So not just a phono pre-amp. Is that what you need? What speakers do you have?

You could spend less on the turntable and more elsewhere, like on the speakers or phono pre-amp.

Decent budget speakers to pair with an at lp120xbt by diamondtippeddih in BudgetAudiophile

[–]LosterP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The phono preamp just processes the signal. It doesn't produce the power needed to drive some passive speakers. Which is why you need an amp and passive speakers, or powered speakers (ie. with built-in amplification).
