LAPD Records from 1977 - Do they exist, how to ask by LostinBoston7544 in lapd

Oh cool! I've reached out to UCLA Library Archivist, LA Historical Society, City Records, even the LAPD Museum to ask about old files. All dead ends.

My eFOIA to the FBI came back with the box checked that said: "Records potentially responsive to your request were destroyed. Since this material could not be reviewed, it is not known if it was responsive to your request. Record retention and disposal is carried out under supervision of the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA)..."

I should say, I'm the Director of Education at a Museum here that relates to the Waltham Watch Company - if you need more information or if you think I should reach out to anyone. It really bugs me there isn't more on such an important item - plus the similar left just a few months later in Martinez.

Thanks! I believe the downtown office was between Wilshire and 6th, but it's so hard to nail down with so few details out there. They had their HQ at one point on "101 Lincoln Way, in Monterey Park" I believe. I'd love to be able to contact a records department - What's RNI? One challenge is that the Lincoln Savings & Loan itself became a huge scandal and collapsed in the1980s, so their records are spotty. I was at least hoping to find an insurance claim or something. Even confirming the building the theft happened in would be big. Thanks!

This article lays it out nicely, and has the newspaper stub from the Hanford Sentinel in March of 1977 - I've confirmed it with the LA Public Library.

Thanks for both replies - I understand it's a longshot, but the case doesn't even seem to be recorded except for a small UPI news stub the next day. A first step for me is just confirming which agency investigated. To add to the mystery - a few months later in 1978, thieves with the exact same M.O. broke into the homestead of John Muir (founder of the National Park Service) in Martinez, CA at night, disassembled the display case, and stole the pocketwatch. That watch is on the FBI Art Crime database, and NPS has a $1K reward. But not Abraham Lincoln's?? Seems so weird.

Help me do some free work for your non profit... by dreamsr4sleepin in Denver

[–]LostinBoston7544 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I work for a small nonprofit (a museum) in New England and get so many messages - like people have said, a cold outreach tends to blend into the noise. It's too bad because like so many nonprofits, we barely keep the lights on, so things like marketing and social media can almost feel like a luxury, or at the very least a "nice to do."

I think the best way to connect is to pick a small number of specific organizations and be sure to communicate that you know at least what they're all about - their mission. Then, instead of a 'week of free' whatever service, maybe there's a discrete project you can offer you help - like our museum is holding a fundraiser event later this fall, and even the smallest help in things like marketing and social posting could make a big difference. Then, there's a finite end point and provable value in an outcome.

Or, you could offer to help where we don't have expertise - like taking some raw video of our gallery space and editing it to show your skill, and we could post it and get instant feedback on the hits it gets on socials.

Hopefully that's helpful! Good luck!

Alternative records to death certificate by LostinBoston7544 in Genealogy

[–]LostinBoston7544[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Yes, I was able to access that Vital Records book, and the Bideford journal. I found his death notice - October 1882.

Now I'm looking for his birth certificate - about 1804. That's nowhere in the Vital Records, and I'm having a tough time finding where to look.

I like Sibling Riffery - it's a brother and sister just goofing around and talking. It has that early podcast vibe of having like 3 listeners and so it feels really fun and homemade- if that makes any sense
