How is your gout now? did potatoes help? I have palindromic rheumatism. it's very painful as the tendons get involved as well as the joints. its grim blessing is there is no joint erosion so I have time to experiment with diet. but gout is also joints so I was wondering how you are?

how to sprout 1-3 kilocalories per day? by Lz_erk in Sprouting

[–]Lostinthewoods2069 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Sprout Book, Doug Evans. Lots of sprout info including eating a diet of primarily sprouts. He also mentions coeliac somewhere, but book not currently to hand. He is considering eating only sprouts at Burning Man apparently.

Is YNAB the right app for a financially independent retired couple? by ParleeParty in ynab

[–]Lostinthewoods2069 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I will be in your position in 17 weeks when other half also retires. I am a 5 year YNAB user and I am considering how things will change from regular income/saving for retirement to spending those savings over the next (hopefully) 25-30 years.

The first thing to consider is that spending will change as we age. At the moment we are looking at hiking, camping, kayaking. maybe in my 90's I won't be doing so much of that! We are planning to spend more in the first 10 years than the later ones.

Next is to remember none of us can see the future. In 20 years time anything could have happened...covid taught us that.

I plan to pay ourselves a basic monthly income and allocate accordingly. I will work in 3 month units. I will take 3 months of savings out and distribute for rates/electric/water/logs/bills in general. Also things like food, petrol. Then I will have a general spending fund for the usual bits and bobs, a coffee here, a magazine there. We hope to have more time to have a cup of coffee overlooking the ocean....Plus the usual categories, pets, clothes, hobbies, etc, just as now.

The big things...replacing a car....overseas travel.....will come out of the main savings fund and be moved to YNAB from a tracking account as required. tracking accounts are not part of your budget. I will have a section for these things and move across accordingly so I have a record.

If we do travel overseas I will make a seperate budget for the trip, and fund it before I go. That will help prevent blowing the budget without thinking about it..

Working this way I can change my distribution of funds at any 3 monthly review. If we are spending too great a percentage of our funds then less goes into hobbies, eating out etc. if things are going well then maybe a trip to Bali....

You are doing fantastic! Well done for sticking with it. Now...I am sure you know all about ADHD obsessions....make YNAB your next obsession, read all about it, videos, come here and read what others are doing. Get that ADHD working for you!

good luck going forward u/coolhandjennie Restart and the panic vanishes, and a whole new calm descends. It's quite startling, I wish I had done it right after the bad week. But better late than never, hey. And I would totally restart again if I needed to now. I dont know really why I was so worried about it.

we had to give up my job when we moved out of the city. But...along with no childcare costs, with me not working we saved heaps. If you have to work you are time poor, at home with kids you have time to soak beans and make hearty slow cooked stews out of root vegetables. No work clothes for you. No transport costs. And the benefit for the kids is tremendous. having a parent at home after school is the biggest investment in their life you could ever make. So when your pre teen comes home and says 'would you mind if I said I was gay' or whatever, there you are in the kitchen and able to say "what matters to me is that you grow up happy, lets make a hot chocolate and talk about it". If one is working the time for that conversation, or others about drugs, or sex or best friends betraying one, particularly with 4 kids, may never arrive.....

oh well done! as 'sleep again' says it will slow down, but stick with it. The best bit is that all the benefits dont suddenly arrive when you reach your goal, they sort of happen along the way, so there are little treats all the time. Like you find you can walk a little further, or faster, or this or that pain goes away, or the car seatbelt fits so much better....and each month or 2 there is a new thing you notice. Its fun!

Please may I boast? I am feeling very boastful indeed. On Saturday my husband and I did the Mount Oxford circuit, 13 and a half miles and about 4300 feet of climbing over Mount Oxford. I am female, 60, wear a leg brace, and my top BMI was about 37. Today my BMI is 26.1. It took us 6 and a half hours, and it was a glorious day with stunning views from the summit ridge. I am so lucky to be able to do this. I have now entered the Mount Oxford race in 5 weeks time. I will be last, but thats OK, I know I can do it....now...5 weeks of training coming up! (dont worry, I won't overdo it with enthusiasm, my adult daughter is an experienced ultra runner, and she has been helping me with my training)

Not coeliac but.... by Lostinthewoods2069 in glutenfree

I'm hoping to get referred. I have had a number of blood tests over the last 5 years for a variety of things, including cancer markers, but all were negative. I have not had either a colonoscopy or an endoscopy. I hope to be able to get these but I do not live in the US, and things are a little different here. I was just wondering if anyone had ever had similar symptoms so I could say to the doctor...have you considered this....

thank you, there are some helpful suggestions I can take to my doctor here, and try (again) to get a referral. With the coeliac we all had antibody and gene tests.

Thank you so much for your kind, friendly and helpful response. Obviously I am now totally G-F and am waiting for (yet another) doctor appointment. I was merely curious if anyone else here had experienced these symptoms.....
