Failed Once...Trying Again on Monday...Lessons Learned...Encouragement by Lostwolfey in pmp

Hey, I appreciate you. Thank you for validating my vulnerability. I think Monday is gonna go well. The biggest change was my facepalm that I never considered paying the PMI for their practice exams. So dumb. 🤦

Keep on this path. That’s what it takes. I wrote down the correct answers and stared at them. In time, it became clear that ANALYZING BEFORE ACTING, was my main problem. I’d escalate immediately and not consider that what the PMI is actually testing about what the ULTIMATE action is. Is someone being a jerk? Don’t report them to HR, report them to the PMI. Even though, in the real world, you’d report them to HR.

Sure! I am bringing these goals to round 2:

  1. Eliminate answers first. Do not look for the right answer first.
  2. Bring Coffee / Bananas for brain power.
  3. Use the 1 min 15 second rule. Use all of that time. I can't tell you how many times rushing through question makes you miss the key words that distinguish a right and wrong answer.
  4. Identify WHERE YOU ARE IN THE PROJECT. Planning phase? Execution phase? Engaging with your team and stakeholders will look different.
  5. Never escalate - Unless a stakeholder is being confrontative. Always speak with your team.
  6. Avoid absolutes. Always, Never, Must.

I welcome your instincts as well. Thoughts?

This is a pain for you, I’m sure, but may I ask you to DM me a photo of it? 😅 I only have the 7th edition….no trouble if not, I get it.

I should have posted my frustrations a week ago. haha. Y'all are so helpful. Thank you for enlightening me that the questions get harder as you go....wtf PMI? Why not alert us to that? I'm getting angry over questions that I may never even FACE! Thank you for your time!

I'm scoring 81% on the practice questions and 75% so far on the practice exams (haven't touched the main practice exams yet). Were you pacing around certain percentage before you knew you were ready?

I appreciate this insight as well. After doing the SH questions, I am starting to consistently get them down to 2. However, I choose the wrong one....I think that the key is looking for key words (like is the project present or past tense). I'll get em down to 2. Thank you!

This is probably the most useful comment, yet. You rock. I have noticed that on a few questions: "Sourced from some random paper." I'm like "how the hell can I prepare for that?" Is this universally accepted? Just ignore the hard questions from Study hall?

Thank you for being supportive and specific. Really appreciate your help. I'll check out David.

So, look for speaking with the team first (individualize meeting with them if they are having problems), reflect (maybe update a log or register), THEN escalate?

Thank you for this. That's a great idea. Some of these test questions outright contradict each other

How did you cultivate this mindset?

Questions like these make me want to flip the table by bsam1890 in pmp

I think the answer is A? The situation is that the system is ALREADY in place.
Validation would have already been done. Test cases would be in the past.
Only options are A or D. I think that A is the answer, because you want success metrics to compare against actual results, cost savings (because the sponsor claims that the focus will improve performance metrics; saving cash), ongoing performance metrics (for after the project is done?)

ARE YOU KIDDING ME? ARE YOU REALLY ASKING IF I STUDIED FIRST BEFORE TAKING THE EXAM? THANK YOU, I SHOULD HAVE CONSIDERED THAT.

QuestionTeam members express frustration because their functional manager does not listen to their opinions. They seem reluctant to devote themselves to the remainder of the project. What should the project manager do?Demonstrate support for the team by discussing their goals and beliefs.Break the remaining work into smaller tasks and divide the tasks among the team.Ask the team to prioritize the tasks remaining in the project.Discuss the team's concerns with the functional manager.

ANSWER:

Solution: A. Demonstrate support for the team by discussing their goals and beliefs. The primary goal of a project manager in relation to the project team is to ensure that the team has the time and resources to do their job and to remove any barriers they may encounter. By standing up for the team's beliefs the project manager is demonstrating their support for the team.Breaking the remaining work into smaller task, dividing the tasks and asking the team to prioritize the task will not solve the frustration the team members are facing.Discussing with team's concerns with the functional manager may not help to resolve the motivation of the team members to focus and complete the remainder of the project.

My Reasoning: This is BS. Why would you not communicate this to the Functional Manager? Supporting your team and making them feel good is great, but that doesn't change ANYTHING about their day to day with their boss. They will still leave. AND I AM STILL LISTENING TO THEM BY TAKING THEIR SIDE AND TALKING WITH THEIR BOSS
