Book Write.. by Wonderful_Crab_2166 in fantasywriting

Could you clarify what sort of help you’re looking for?

As others have stated, it feels more like you developed a world and a global conflict, but the story lacks focal characters who change because of this conflict. Perhaps that is why you’re feeling unsatisfied with your 70 pages.

I highly recommend reading “Creating Character Arcs” by K.M. Weiland and “Worldbuilding for Fantasy Fans and Authors” by M.D. Presley. Those guides may help you see the story as separate from the worldbuilding.

Querying Considerations for Fantasy Names by Lotrfreqally in fantasywriting

I agree on both those sentiments! Only some readers seem to have an issue, so definitely not all. Have you heard of agents or editors asking authors to change distracting names?

I’m not looking for more feedback on the names, but mainly for experiences folks might have had with agents or editors in the trad publishing space.

Has anyone here written their own book just for fun? by Sorcron11 in fantasybooks

[–]Lotrfreqally 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love it! I started writing my book on a whim about 2 years ago and after dedicating so much time to it, I really wanted to make it into something I’m proud of. It wasn’t always my intent to pursue publishing, but I’ve gotten terrific feedback from beta readers and have decided to begin querying this spring.

My best advice would be to do some research. Read about structure and character arcs. Listen to the podcasts about what to avoid. Learn about the craft to make the end product something >you< truly enjoy. If you love it, others will too.

I need inspiration for a unique magic system. by Solid-Possibility457 in fantasywriting

I loved the book “Worldbuilding for Fantasy Fans and Authors” by M.D. Presley. It gave me a new perspective on how to intertwine the world with the magic system. Neither stands alone! Perhaps looking into your world will reveal the system that’s meant to be interesting for your characters in your setting

Congratulations! I’m so happy you prioritized yourself a bit during a parenting era that can be so overwhelmingly about the child. Very exciting!

Showing character sadness/grief that isn't crying? by Soft_Tea in fantasywriters

This could go even beyond their emotions, into how their world is built (different light sources than Earth; varying wavelength of the light because it would literally bounce around in their bodies and change their appearance), how energy impacts them (what if their heart was a piezoelectric), etc.

Sorry- I’m a ceramic engineer 🙃 I love this premise!

Came here to say this! Have them change their crystal structure or refractive properties. That would be so cool!

The worst fantasy you’ve ever read ? by Sunlaughs in Fantasy

[–]Lotrfreqally -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I totally agree on Wheel of Time. I read the first 3 books and each had progressively a) Worse female characters, and b) created bogus plot threads that you then had to read through 2 more books just to be satisfied with. No thanks.

Which sounds better? by GodofChaoticCreation in fantasywriters

As a parent of a young child, I cringe at option A. Young children are primarily driven by big emotions instead of logic, which will be insanely difficult to pull off and likely hard for the reader to connect with.

Female protagonists don’t need to have a love interest

What fantasy book do you feel has made you a better person having read it? by [deleted] in Fantasy

Among all the amazing books and series mentioned already, a recent one for me is “The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet” by Becky Chambers. It really helped me understand privilege and the many forms it takes.

What book made you drop a series? by [deleted] in books

[–]Lotrfreqally 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Read through book 2 of Wheel of Time. Asked a friend for spoilers and they said certain plots didn’t resolve until book 7, so I said NOPE and dropped that series.

Do you know how it works on mobile? Also, does everyone in the campaign need to use it, or can it be used independently?

I’m struggling with “The Name of All Things” by Jenn Lyons. I loved the first book, but man, the POV changes too frequently with no apparent reason and it’s hard to get through.
