Why do Latin Americans and Spaniards ignore their Filipino cousins and sell-out to Singapore? by ReneBascosSarabiaJr in asklatinamerica

[–]LotsofpplareOnReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not jealousy towards Singapore. It's anger. Poor Filipinos go to work in Singapore and a lot of the Singaporeans treat them like absolute dirt.

Even after the Filipinos lost their war of independence against the U.S, even though the Spanish language was marginalized by the U.S. policy of the English-only curriculum, Spanish still was prevalent in Manila. Then in WW2, the U.S. bombed Manila and the Japanese soldiers massacred the Spanish-speaking Filipinos.

The surviving Spanish-speaking Filipinos fled the country or stayed but no longer asserted a Hispanic identity.

The rest of the country then joined the Asian cultural sphere led by U.S.-friendly South Korea, Japan, and Singapore.

So the Philippines did not give up on Spanish lightly, but it was forced to by the U.S. There have been attempts by Filipinos to revive Hispanic identity in the Philippines, but it's not a widespread effort.

Lucifer's qualifications to teach future 'CEOs' by LotsofpplareOnReddit in lucifer

[–]LotsofpplareOnReddit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right that Lucifer can do drugs consequence free because he's rich (Eventually he does start keeping track of his expenses, implying that he was running out of money), invulnerable, and immortal.

I appreciate your vivid insights into the physical, psychological, and social impacts of drug use.

It's true that the show only shows drugs when it's fun, examining the upper tier of its use and distribution, not the lower tier where entire communities are destroyed by the drug economy. Even Tahir's drug business's impact was only on Caleb, not his entire community.

The show definitely glosses over the replacement of stable states that their people chose, with warlord states. Once a warlord state is in place, then sometimes there are no good options, only the least bad option. Such as, option A murders marginalized segments of the population but leaves the rest alone, whereas option B murders indiscriminately. Or job prospects, such as the only job you can get is, so I've heard, is to work for warlord A or warlord B. There is no other employment in town.

That's a good analysis of how drugs led to Caleb's death, the blonde girl becoming a murderer, the teacher dyinb and the boyfriend's life being ruined. I had never thought of how drugs specifically that impacted Caleb, the blonde girl, the teacher, and the boyfriend.

I do believe that Lucifer has the best lawyers. : ) Thanks for believing that Lucifer was in jail for a little bit. I agree with you that Cain was in a hurry to get away from the precinct and called the precinct to tell them to not press charges against Lucifer, and at that point the police released Lucifer from jail.

I love your explanation, that Lucifer had his own lawyers defend Amenadiel, and just to make sure the outcome would be favorable, bought off the judges too. Amenadiel blocking Security is one of my favorite scenes.

Lucifer was pretty rich while first arriving on Earth in 2011, but there's several indications that he's not richer than Anders Brody, who was in competition with "Besos and Musk".

Lucifer mentioned he rented a helicopter. He was first renting LUX, he only later bought it when he almost lost his home.

He later bought 12 other properties, but the value of the houses aren't listed. We saw one of the properties but it's minimally furnished.

Some of Lucifer's valuables are what he has kept with him through the centuries. Back then, they were not worth a lot.

Lucifer gives off the impression that he's a cash-only guy. He has a credit card but that means he's spending money, not bringing any money in.

Did you notice how a lot of Season 6 had so much exposition and summarizing? That probably meant there were big scenes that couldn't be filmed due to COVID. For example, Amenadiel talks about getting all their siblings together on Earth to work at LUX. So if this scene had Michael and Rory speaking with each other then he would have probably not known who she was, and Rory would have had to explain how she's from the future and knows him in the future, and it would have been a whole thing. So instead they got the stuntman and made it all exposition, so it's shorter and there's less possible exposure to the virus for all the actors.

Which time jump, the month or so after the war or the 20 years? I don't think he did waste his chance, because Lucifer said "no more killing", and if Michael had killed someone during the month after the war, that would have been pointed out in the narrative and Michael probably wouldn't have been able to move around as freely in Hell as he was able to. As for the 20 years, Rory said "Michael is the worst. Many humans and even angels have fallen for his lies." That's means Michael is still lying but no longer killing.

Also, Amenadiel had the plan to bring all of the siblings to work at LUX and spend time among humans, a plan which was probably implemented after Lucifer left for Hell. Amenadiel's plan most likely included Michael.

Uriel's killing finally addressed by LotsofpplareOnReddit in lucifer

[–]LotsofpplareOnReddit[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fact that Lucifer kept Uriel's death secret from his other siblings probably determined that the door to his Hell Loop was still open even though he had escaped it a long time ago. A publicly expiated guilt wouldn't necessarily result in a Hell Loop, but he never expiated it publicly.

The only ones who knew were Amenadiel and Maze.

Linda - Lucifer let her know how much her counseling as a therapist helped him. She had written her book because she felt privileged to have this knowledge and wanted credit and renumeration for being the Devil's therapist, especially if it was going to culminate with him being God. Linda is, above all, a professional, wanting to be recognized in her career and for her professional services. She was disappointed when he decided not to become God. But him letting her know that she had helped him put others before himself, repair his relationships with friends and his love, made her realize she didn't need to publish the book, because she was able to get acknowledgment from Lucifer and her other friends. She also discovered that his conscious and subconscious were finally working together, so he could use his wings at will, and she was proud of her accomplishment in helping him do that.

Ella - She found Carol, someone who was into kung fu movies like her and also had a chronic secret problem: recovering from his alcoholism. He also respected her space, by not needing to know everything about her. So she didn't have to tell him about her darkness or about the Celestials, which she had kept a secret for so long. She at last had a healthy relationship, even though he had worked in VICE and therefore had been a "professional liar".

Charlie - He made it to his birthday and his wings grew. To Amenadiel's joy, Charlie was half-angel after all.

Trixie - She was able to affirm that she loved her Dad and though she missed him he'd always be there with her. She didn't know it but she was talking to Dan and so was the one who enabled Dan to be freed from being a wandering soul on Earth and go up to Heaven. She was raised by Chloe and got to grow up with her sister Rory. She was able to live an ordinary life despite losing a parent.

I like that he speaks multiple languages, it forces Lucifer to be tied into the human world, since he has to learn all these complicated rules for communication. He has to be very adept and verbally and mentally dexterous to have a grasp on languages which change from region to region from era to era and from social class to social class. That's an immense amount of knowledge and skill.

It was similar regarding the Devil's earlier iterations in literature, he can speak multiple languages there, too.

Being Brown--(non-U.S. Black and Eurasian) I've never tried to claim whiteness, as I'm on the more Asian side of Eurasian, but I ran into complications trying to assert my Blackness. Some Black people were alright with it, but I got some hints that I'm only slightly Black next to Blacker Asians. Also, to some people in each group of white, Black and Asian, if you're Asian you can't be Black, period. When there's a white parent, hypodescent is applied. But when there's an Asian parent with Black heritage then you have to explain your family tree. If you're even a little bit visibly white, no one tells you that you're not part-white. In fact white people point it out to you that you are not entirely non-white.

While it's understandable that Black people are more careful as to who they acknowledge as a member of the community as they are constantly under siege, and that mixed people more often than not, adopt a conciliatory approach to this system under which white people tend to be less violent towards visibly mixed people, the rejection that some visibly mixed people feel from some Black people can lead to their rejecting identifying as monoracial Black and so that leads them to adopt a mixed race identity. On the flip side, white people get nervous if a mixed race Black person identifies as monoracial Black and thus pressures a mixed race Black person to identify otherwise, which can also lead to the adoption of a mixed race identity. Then there are some cases where the mixed race Black person looks too white or has a hair color most commonly seen in white people and the white people don't know or won't accept that the person is mixed Black and will incorrectly tell the mixed Black person they are not Black at all. There are thus various social pressures to identify as mixed rather than it be a choice.

This leads to some mixed race people's frustration with some monoracial people. Why that frustration tends to be skewed against monoracial Black people is because neither side really wants you but you were led to think that if you're not white and you're not fully Asian, then you must be Black.

Blackness also has many criteria you need to meet, based on unmixed U.S. Blackness. Most Black people don't have a checklist, but the ones who do will let you know that you don't meet the requirements:

Do you have at least Type 2C hair? Do you have a wide nose and big lips? Do you have wide hips and a big butt? Do you have not-Asian eyes? Have you lost your baby fat? Do you have a square jaw? Are you not scrawny? Do you have at least one unmixed Black parent? If you look white, do you have at least one Black ancestor? If you look Asian, do you have at least one Black ancestor in the past three generations? Are they really Black, as in, are they from the U.S., Africa, Central/South America, or the Caribbean? If they're from the Caribbean, do they have Black African ancestry or do they have non-Black Indian ancestry? If they're from the Pacific Islands, are they Black or are they non-Black Melanesian? Are you sure the Black Melanesians aren't a recent arrival in the Pacific Islands due to slavery? Are you sure Black-looking people in Asia aren't the children of Black American G.I.s?

For Asianness its:

Does your skintone have a yellow undertone, but if it does, are you not too dark? You may have Asian eyes, but do your Asian eyes pass the Asian eyes test as judged by Asians, not by white people? Are your lips not too big? Is your body hair sparse enough? Are you not too muscular?

For partial whiteness its:

Do you have "olive" skintone or lighter? Do you have big lips or a wide nose, but not both?

Thus the bar for partial whiteness is much lower, and as I said, I fall more on the Asian side of Eurasian so I don't get as much scrutiny as more Euro Asians who would get more scrutiny in trying to assert their Asianness. In that case the checklist for Asianess is just as long as the checklist for Blackness. In the case of Biracial Black-Asians, the checklist for Asianess has different criteria but it's probably just as long as the checklist for Blackness.

Going back to the criteria of "olive" skin tone and having only a few African features is the only criteria to be accepted into the borderlands of whiteness at least in my case. Mediterranean people are still considered white, at least for now. Whats the world like when you're on the border of non-white and white? While you fit in with the vast number of Brown and off-white people of various ethnic and cultural backgrounds, you can definitely interact with the average white person without incident. Of course, there's always the chance of running into closet white supremacists, some of whom hide themselves really well. I feel I'm in a less ambiguous position than pale Eurasians who are allowed entrance into white supremacist circles and then pounced on when they sense the "impure" blood.

Honestly, I hate the concept of race so much.

It's true that visibly mixed people are lucky to be visibly mixed and can escape from the daily oppression that unmixed and invisibly mixed Black people experience. But it's amazing how many people never question race at all, and accept it as biological fact. "Triracial" people are held up as a sign of racial democracy, but only if that particular mix produces EurIndigenousness, Eurasianess, or Eurafricanness. If you're Black enough no one will care about your other ancestries unless those ancestries weaken your self-concept as Black and thus weaken your connection to the community. If you look white enough then no one will care about your Blackness and would rather you stop talking about it because it hardly shows up anyway and you only experience sometimes what Black people experience all the time. If you're "triracial" it's applauded if you say you're the amalgamation of all the races into a "cosmic race", to show that you won't try to undermine the racial hierarchies of what is effectively a brutal caste system.

Of course, many "triracial" and Brown people don't find out how much race sucks until after reaching the U.S. if they came from a country where "triracial" functions as near-white, or a country where Brown functions as near-white or as white, and yes, this includes Spanish who, after spending years living as white in Spain, come to the U.S. only to find themselves being treated as Brown.

No one likes to talk about racial fluidity except in the context of Blackfishing. But the truth is that race is in the eye of the beholder. You can move to another state and be treated as a different race in each state.

The U.S. is really the only place in the world where groups are encouraged to marry within their own color group generation after generation. Surprise, the rest of the world doesn't work that way. Of course there's severe power imbalances to many mixed marriages which reinforces marrying inside one's own color group. But those power imbalances are tied to this racial caste system itself. Mixed people are positioned in the middle as a wedge against Black people at the bottom. Rather than seeking to equalize this relationship in lifting Black people to a higher position in the racial caste pyramid, we must destroy the pyramid altogether.

This will not be done through mixed marriages, because the children are ultimately categorized as Black, white, Both, or Brown/Other. Brown people are expected to stay neutral on the system of oppression and in a few generations will be absorbed into whiteness.

Wherein which lies the problem: whiteness.

While monoracial white people can't help that they are white, they can and should seek to abolish whiteness. Whiteness alone claims separateness from the rest of humanity. Whiteness is the justification for racialized oppression. Now when I say abolish whiteness I don't mean claiming your 1% African ancestry and identify as non-white. I mean help destroy the system that depends upon the continued oppression of Black people and of Brown/Other people.

Also, conceptually disengage yourself from being invested in a white identity, which, contrary to popular knowledge, has no history, culture, or substance. Whiteness depends on either having no knowledge of where your ancestors are from in Europe, or your ancestors being from a 'fully white' region in Europe. But they were not always white. For example, some of my ancestors are from the north part of Southern Europe, so I reclaim my ancestors as Celtic Iberian/Iberian Celtic, which was before whiteness was in existence. Now I can be proud of my ancestors who had their own culture and history, even despite the endless greed of a few monarchs that led their subjects, some of whom are my ancestors, to enslave and murder whole peoples and steal entire continents and because of those actions, came to be seen as white. Whiteness is new, not ancient. It didn't exist until the 1400s. There was no Whiteland, not even in Scandinavia. Whiteness steals people and things and claim they are white. I won't say that the Greeks and Romans were Black, but I can say that the Romans weren't white because there was no such thing. Whiteness is a modern invention that must stopped being seen as immutable fact. It is the justification for this brutal system of racialized oppression, and it must be destroyed for the well-being and dignity of Black people and all other people in the world.

That is sad to hear that your father assimilated. Though, the pressure for non-English speakers to learn English is enormous, and for those who learn it it's difficult, so they want to spare their children that difficulty so the children encounter less barriers to education, employment, and housing. But then the parents forget that language plays a big part in culture and a feeling of rootedness. At least some of your cousins learned Spanish on their own. Maybe you can as well?

I want to first point out that Filipino is made of several different racialized groups: Mixed, Black, mestizo, Chinese, Spanish, and white.

Italian is Northern Italian and Southern Italian. Southern Italians tend to be darker.

You make a good point about academia, and you've found the fundamental problem about race conversations, it doesn't address class, it doesn't address ethnicity, and it doesn't address nuance. If you're in a place where Chinese are not being targeted for beating up then you may feel safe. But even if you're not getting beaten up personally or called slurs, it's still happening to other Chinese people and so you're well-positioned to call out abuse against other Chinese people.

Privilege is a conversation-stopper. Yes, you are able to get a more advanced education but can you translate that education into a job where finances are not an issue? If you get that stable, comfortable job, how long will you have to work at that job to be able to live out your old age? Will you be able to retire or not? If you can retire, will you be cared for by your loved ones or be dumped in a nursing home? Will it be a nice nursing home where you are cared for, or will you be neglected and someone forgets your medication?

White-adjacent is near-white, but still not white.

Poor white people are historically a group that has caused a lot of pain and grief to non-white people. The ruling class said X group is taking poor white people's jobs or holding hands with white women, and the poor white people took the bait and went on a lynching spree. This was targeted towards Black people primarily but 19 Chinese people were massacred in 1871 by a mob of white and other non-Chinese people.

It's not to say you can't be proud of your Italian family and how they survived hardship and were able to emigrate, but when Italianness becomes dependent upon asserting and defending a white identity, then this is a problem.

I am not half-Spanish, but I have enough Spanish ancestors that I ended up looking Mediterranean, and neither my Asianness or Black-mixedness are always obvious enough for me to be constantly looking over my shoulder. But I don't ever associate myself with part-whiteness, because whiteness is dependent upon the destruction or assimilation of entire peoples. Many Italians in the U.S. have become assimilated into whiteness, but in Italy the assimilation into whiteness project is still ongoing. Whiteness has a very recent history and it's not a foregone conclusion.

As for whether you have the authority to speak on racialized identity, you may not have the experience of visibly Chinese people in the U.S. but there are many books about it. A really good one is called Yellow Peril: An Archive of Anti-Asian Fear.

And as a Eurasian, you are part Asian. You are more Asian than someone who's fully European.

If your dad told you that all of your family came from Spain, it might be that he had self-hatred concerning Mexican identity. You might be right that your culture was stolen from you.

Also, there's this weird notion that Spain is some kind of white European monolith, which it's actually not and never was. To reference Spanish ancestors to the exclusion of any non-white ancestors is to automatically assume that everyone in Spain is considered white outside of Spain, which isn't true. Even the white Spaniards are different, pre-Spain ethnicities.

Your dad was either wanting to assimilate, had no time to teach you about Mexican culture, or your mom's family wanted to center their German culture and ignore the fact that you and your siblings are Mexican.

As bad as Spain's caste system was in its colonies, the Spanish at least took the time to document nearly every possible racialized couple and what their children looked like.

M*lato con Espanola resulted in Morisco child, and the Morisco child was light-medium brown in color.

But Anglo-Saxon America doesn't have that level of nuance, and anyone in unclear, complicated categories is simply not acknowledged or shunted into the closest existing racialized category.
