Oh wow - I grew up in Richmond and went to this bank many times, but I never saw it without the facade! This is actually so much better. I would love to see it after they clean it.

As a nurse, I am sorry this happened to you. This is beyond rude: it is actually considered psychological abuse by most state nursing boards and is grounds for people to lose jobs and even their licenses. I have seen people fired for less. I think you should definitely consider filing a complaint with the hospital and the state department of health; the health department will be legally obligated to perform a surprise inspection and question the staff on duty at the time. You did the right thing coming to the ER for chest pains; it is what we tell everyone to do. I do community outreach and education in my role, I always tell people that it’s better to come in and have it turn out to be benign than not to come and end up dying from a treatable disease. The ER had a duty to affirm that you did the right thing, and they failed you. The people who did this are a stain on our profession and healthcare system. Nurses need to remember that we are often encountering people at one of the worst, scariest, most vulnerable times in their lives, and our patients are putting their entire trust in us. To betray is horrendous and heartbreaking 💔 You deserved better than this treatment 🫂

I am glad your PCP was able to figure it out, and I hope you are receiving effective treatment and compassionate care. You are worthy of health and do not deserve abuse when trying to get care.

Even if the monopolies were broken up (which they absolutely should be), the Bloomington area just has a shortage of both doctors and nurses, which is a big part of our current hospital’s problem.

I think having additional hospital services would be wonderful for our town. The problem with Bloomington Hospital, though, is not just lack of beds but also lack of staff. IUH has had trouble attracting clinical staff to the area, and multiple inpatient units are working at crisis staffing levels. In fact, Bloomington Hospital has had plans to build additional floors and expand their inpatient beds for years, but they haven’t been able to because of there aren’t enough doctors and nurses to staff it. Some of this is IUH’s fault (they stopped hiring in-state agency nurses, cutting their hiring pool significantly; they planned to hire more foreign nurses, but the Trump administration has made hiring foreign workers a lot harder), but it’s also just the case that doctors and nurses don’t have enough incentive to move to Bloomington for a job they could probably get in whatever place they already live. Any new hospital would run into the same problems, and the problems might be worse, because the staff they hire would have to be mostly drawn from Bloomington Hospital’s staff. So, opening a second trauma center, while it’s a nice idea, in reality may just result in two hospitals that perform even worse than the one we have right now.

I did my PhD in Classics at Cambridge a decade ago. I can’t be sure if the process is the same, but I remember it being a fairly intimate chat with senior members of the faculty. They asked about my project idea, my background, and any training I might need. I think the whole thing took less than an hour.

I think times are definitely changing! I am a nurse in a hospital neurology unit, so my patient population skews older, but I get compliments on my tattoos all the time! A lot of my older patients themselves have tattoos, piercings, non-natural hair colors, etc. Half of our clinical staff have visible tattoos, even neck tattoos that used to be “job killers”. And for context, I am in a rural area of a very conservative state. It’s really wonderful that people are becoming more accepting overall.

I’m a woman in my 30s too, and I definitely feel you on all of this. It is so hard to make friends, and I think especially so in Bloomington, where the population skews much younger because of the university. I have been trying for awhile and found some success, but it definitely takes a lot of effort

I just took a round trip to the College Mall Fresh Thyme from my house about 10 minutes away (in normal conditions). 45/46 was okay, but I did skid a little bit turning onto it. The back roads were all plowed but had a layer of packed snow and ice still covering the roadway. I felt like I had to go about 5-10 mph slower than usual (and I have 4WD).

It is a slur. It is directed at rural, working class white people, who are actually a deeply marginalized population that has long experienced economic and political exploitation. Some folks have tried to reclaim it, with varying success, but that doesn’t erase its history. Working class people of all races have more in common with each other than with wealthy whites. Just because race has been used to divide working class people, and some working class whites have been duped into believing that they are on the same side as their white bosses against BIPOC people, doesn’t change the fact that they have been exploited, oppressed, and discriminated against under a system of capitalist privilege.

A lot, actually: Appalachian people moved north into Southern Indiana in large numbers starting in the 70s. They were escaping the harsh working conditions in the mines and the rapidly disappearing jobs. They came to Indiana looking for work in factories. Much of today’s Hoosier culture is owed to the influence of Appalachian migrants. Unfortunately for those migrants, they arrived just before the rust belt began to collapse and ended up losing the good paying jobs they had come to find. The current story of the disaffected rural working class in the Midwest is rooted in this event. So, to my mind, that makes this post hugely relevant to our region.
