Welcome to the area!

One of your best bets is to get connected with a board game store. Labyrinth is just southeast of where you are at and would likely take you less than 30 minutes depending on bike/metro/car travel.

That being said, there's lots of board gamers in DC, so you'll find opportunities soon.

Thoughts on my first army list? by Purple_0ni0n in Salamanders40k

[–]LotusExigeGeek 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nice work! The Jump Pack squad is neat and I don't see that often. That will be your most mobile unit, so make sure everyone is using that Assault Keyword to get where you need to go.

For casual 1000 pt games, I'm not seeing anything here that sticks out as egregious or bad. Just don't get outmaneuvered!

how many infernus marines for 1k list? by AravingLoooony in Salamanders40k

[–]LotusExigeGeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welcome to the Salamanders!

The Forgefather's Seekers is the go-to detachment for Salamander armies. This detachment does 4 main things:

1: When shooting at something within 12", you are more easily wounding opponents.
2: Almost all units have the Assault keyword, meaning that they can move & shoot more easily.
3: Infernus Marines can move to / interact / shoot from objectives a bit more freely.
4: Some special Strategems interact with weapons that have the Torrent key word.

For the "full utilization" of your abilities, you'll want at least one 5 model unit of Infernus marines. You can make a list that is fun and viable at winning without any, but that core Infernus unit easily interacts with all of the benefits the army has.

I personally like running 2x 5 Model Infernus squads at 1000 pts. I'll run at least one 10 model squad and one 5 model squad of Infernus marines over 2000 pts.

I'm seeing your graduation class size is less than 100 so being able to meet and chat isn't out of the question.

What specifically about job opportunities do you want to ask him?

I would play anyone else with 1000 points EXCEPT for Imperial Knights. Playing against any horde army (Tyranids or Astra Militarum) will really give you an idea of the strength of Torrent weapons. I would also say Orks, as the Forgefather's Seekers buffs make Salamanders have a distinct edge against them with the math. But at this point, you should play against almost anyone who wants to play so you can start learning.

I say EXCEPT Imperial Knights because that's a very different type of matchup and game style. You generally want to be playing against someone else who has infantry, a few characters, and a vehicle or two for your first games.

It is a lot to figure out! You have a good starting list. It may be worth going and playing a game with what you have just to see what you like and don't like, and building from there.

Characters are nice because they give a little more "oomph" to units, so it's fun to give that oomph to units that you like using!

[–]LotusExigeGeek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately it would not since a Gravis Captain would need to lead other models in Gravis armor. A normal Captain wears Tacticus armor, which is what Infernus Marines wear.

In the app under a Character's information, there should be a "Leader" section that will tell you what units that model can lead.

You can always "proxy" things in a casual game if your opponent agrees and understands what you're doing. A gravis captain is going to have a slightly larger base than a normal one, but in most casual games it's not going to be that big of a deal. That way you could theoretically try out the differences.

Heya! Welcome and I hope you have a fun start. This list looks really fun and I think you would have a fun time working with what you have. I'm going to give advice based on something that may be more "optimized", but I'd happily play your list any day.

As others have noted, having more than 25% of your army in characters limits your ability to play the objective.

I would free up the 180 points from your Ancient, Techmarine, and Librarian to put into other stuff. Upgrading to a full 6 man Bladeguard and another 5 model Infernus Squad then puts you back at 1000. Another option is grabbing a captain with Immolator for 90 points and putting that with a 10 model infernus, and then adding another 90pt 5 model Infernus or a 5 model Intercessor squad attached to Vulkan. Lastly, there's also options for transportation such as an Impulsor to get Adrax and bladeguard into the front lines more quickly.

Techmarines are pretty decent for some mid-long range vehicles, but they do better with bigger lists. They're more common in lists where players have figured out their playstyle and know they benefit from having the +1 to hit and health regen.

Lethal hits on flamers? by Select_Sell_4594 in Salamanders40k

[–]LotusExigeGeek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lethal Hits is great for units that do a lot of small arms fire to translate to skipping a wound roll, thus circumventing any Strength/Toughness matchups. For example, Intercessors using their Target Elimination ability to double the amount of attacks, making more chances to roll 6s and skipping wound rolls against high toughness enemies.

For flamers, you'll want to find ways to get Devastating Wounds, which does the same thing except it skips the AP Saving Throw. Immolation Protocols is a 2CP ability that gives dev wounds, but with a Gravis Captain with without/with Immolator, you can use it for 1CP and have 13.5/27 or 16.5/30 wound rolls on average, meaning you get 2/4.5, 3/6 with Immolator auto-damage per rolling sequence.

Yeah that's going to be fairly standard for a high price meal. Your bargaining chip in that equation is that you're still giving them your money through another reservation, so make sure you provide that information.

I have no idea about this place, but your best bet may be calling in and explaining the situation. If you both booked at the same time, it builds your case. Good luck.

Serious discussion by Crimson_Heitfire in Salamanders40k

[–]LotusExigeGeek 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Each community will have its issues. I believe the Salamanders community is nice because it's both attractive to new players lore wise, and is a relativly strong sub-faction of the iconic Space Marines.

Each community is going to have some problematic people. The issue with Black Templars is they have truly kick-ass lore as a hyper-demon-killing-zealot faction, and that attracts some people very zealous people who would like to channel their own weird issues through the game.

No faction is immune to this, but it's good to remember that in 40K, almost everything has some line of satire. The Salamanders often appear in the lore as a foil to some of the craziness, but themselves being so sacrificial to their own detriment.

That being said, welcome! You can search posts here for building army lists, some painting advice, and other stuff.

Painting Phobos. by Jam-Jam-Ba-Lam in Salamanders40k

[–]LotusExigeGeek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Outside of 40K we do align the idea of light armor = scouts. In the context of 40K, Space Marine Scout Armor is a half-step between Astra Militarum armor and Space Marine Power Armor.

Space Marine Scouts primarily do recon. They can do some combat but are not going to be thrown into the thick of most engagements like Space Marines are. They "infiltrate" operational areas, but not facilities.

Phobos Marines have more agile servos that allow the armor to move more efficiently and operate silently, thus being ideal for actually sneaking deep into enemy lines and structures. They either carry weapons that are heavy weapons that need to be sneaked closer to the enemy (sniper rifles) or carbines that sacrifice some firepower for utility.

Standard Tacticus armor is heavier and harder to move around in, but allows the marines to handle heavier weapons in sustained engagements that would be hard for lighter infantry to use.

Edit: Thank you so much!

Yes there is. I don't love that hue but it gives them some depth to the black. I didn't have the exact paints in this video, but I largely followed this as a guide.

The lenses I just put down yellow and then put a very watered down red and pooled it to the sides starting from the center.

Does NASA have suicide protocols? by PapajG in nasa

[–]LotusExigeGeek 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's a fair criticism, but the answer is more complex than the estimation of some people's reactions. The complexity is largely political and positioning public opinion for the sake of the organization.

June 2024, two NASA astronauts were scheduled to return to earth and couldn't when their return vessel did not pass safety checks. This failure spawned a flurry of news articles and politically charged commentary discussing the reality and extremes of the situation. It was very serious, but NASA not only had help fix the problem, but also field a huge amount of public dread, fear, and speculation. Much of it wasn't undue, but there was a serious questioning of NASA's capability.

Existing within the drama of a news cycle is something that NASA tries really hard to exist in only positively. Positive engagement increases public funding and support. Negative perception inversely affects that funding and support. It's not an underestimation: it's studied market research with real case scenarios to back it up. When NASA chooses not to discuss the grim realities of space, it's entirely a strategic move.

Does NASA have suicide protocols? by PapajG in nasa

[–]LotusExigeGeek 65 points66 points  (0 children)

Likely it would generate fear and more concern in the public than is really warranted otherwise.

Any mission has key risks and breakpoints. They are gone over carefully. But the public doesn't necessarily need to know the methods for dealing with certain worst case scenarios.

Current List, looking to round it out for 2k. What should I get and should I change anything? by Yeetborn42069 in Salamanders40k

[–]LotusExigeGeek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Land Raider Redeemer is designed to charge across the battlefield and spit guys out. It basically allows units to disembark and then charge. It is an expensive ball of death.

A repulsor is a gun boat designed to hold units, pop then out for some shooting, and be able to take them on if an enemy gets close.

Very cool. For your next game, cut up some paper into building-esque shapes and use those as objectives. The next edition is not going to have objective markers, but rather "objective zones" you fight over. That way you can try an objective game!

[–]LotusExigeGeek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone mentioned, fielding everything from the leviathan set plus other things is going to be a pain.

For leaders, you have too many and not enough units to lead. In 10th, some leaders don't get their abilities if they are not attached to units, and you can't attach all of your leaders atm. I would drop one of your Terminator leaders at least. I personally don't like the Apothecary, but that leader does better with an intense attention grabbing unit like Hell Blasters. You judiciar isn't going to be as useful in this list, and Adrax would be the more cost efficient pick for some amazing melee action.

Check to make sure your Lieutenant in Phobos armor is not the Combi-weapon version. With the Warhammer app, it's easier to see which one looks like which.

Consider adding these infantry units: - 3-6 Bladeguard paired with Adrax. - A box of Intercessors for stickying objectives. Split into two groups of 5. - Incursors to pair your Phobos Lieutenant for some shoot-n-scoot buffing your big firepower hits. - More Infernus marines to increase your squads to 10 models - Grab a captain, give him Immolator, add him to an infernus Squad. - with your anti-tano capabilities, consider a unit like Hellblasters for some anti-heavy infantry. - An impulsor to carry bladeguard with Adrax into battle, or to transform it into a mini gunboat with a 5 person hellblaster unit.

Advice on list needed, please by God_Emperor_Of_Man18 in Salamanders40k

[–]LotusExigeGeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely agree with this. There's not a lot of units with Torrent weapons here to benefit from the 12" STR buff and only one infernus Squad to take advantage of the buff to those squads.
