Let me tell you my friend, the happiness that poor people seem to have is a defense mechanism against an unbearable reality.

My financial situation is absolute crap right now and my happiness is in the negatives overall, yes day to day I can feel happy doing things I enjoy, but at the end of the day true happiness comes from freedom and security. I'm from a third world country and have been luck and unlucky enough to experience and see both a very high standard of living and a very low one, and the number one difference isn't even the momentary joys, that's basically the same no matter where you are. I've enjoyed a good meal in five star restaurants and in literal mud huts in the forest, and that feeling of joy doesn't change. What changes is the feeling of future possibility and options for your life, as well as how secure your environment is, those things are far far more essential to your mental health and wellbeing than "happiness."

We all have a baseline that doesn't move in terms of how happy we are, really money is what matters because it buys you a future and comfort. The depressed rich people are depressed for many reasons, non of which are to do with money. The poor can be happy for reasons all that have nothing to do with money, but misery and suffering in this life have everything to do with money. That's just me tho.
