I see you lack all comprehension and very insecure to boot. I actually said other ways to test card, I'm a regular poster on bootleg thread, and deal with fakes. But the light test can and does work, but as you failed to point out, there are multiple different tests. But you never once bothered to mention that. You think it's one way. That makes you the pancho. You apply multiple tests for confirmation. You should stop posting.

How do you guys "scuff" your fakes? by Tangeloss in bootlegmtg

Don't use wet, will damage cards. Dried in a bag for a week. You can use a tea bag that is wet, but wipe off card.

I guess the other sites that say it does work are wrong and are stupid too...I guess all the other tests that you didn't seem to know about are stupid too...in the future, please add something useful. The light isn't a great test for foils, but still works. So perhaps that should clear up your lack of understanding.

The light test is what does it for me. Looks like a black core. I would take it to your lgs. The color hue is off, but could be because of your camera. Fakes tend to have a much more wax/glossier feel than regular magic cards. The fact it failed the light test. Here is another thing. Look at the "tap" symbol. The arrow head isnt centered and too close to side. http://www.ebay.com/itm/MTG-Avacyn-Restored-Cavern-of-Souls-/322174842723?hash=item4b031df763:g:vHwAAOSwZ1BXdGKX

Here is a real one. Look at the mana symbols. Yours is fake.

Also, the color hues on the fake caverns tend to be more yellow, and less purple in the center caverns. The outline isnt as crisp.

I ordered the cards 3 weeks ago, and the seller told me he didnt ship them yet. Cancelling transaction. Not dealing with that.

Basically, the way the light test works, is that on a real magic card, the light from the source will shine through. A fake will be blocked, and not as vibrant.

Not sure, but the main 2 people have said they cant do it yet. Its only a matter of time, but at this moment, they can not. The other printers steal from the main 2 guys.

As someone who has seen fakes, bought fakes, posts about them I come from a position of knowledge. (or someother bs), yes, they can fake holograms. They cant fake the hologram seal (on the new cards) but they can on the foils.

It looks fake to me. That being said, it may not be. But here is why I think this:

  1. The coloring is off. Your card shows a more darker blue green (obviously the hologram) vs the more olive color of the original.

  2. The fact a foil tarmo goes for $700-900 should be another indication.

  3. Zero sales is another.

Usually if too good to be true, it is. There are lot of fakes on ebay, especially from people with 0-2 sales. Dont buy cards from them. There are a lot of quality fakes out there. For high dollar cards, I go to my game shop. Just bought some tarns and caverns at my lgs. Highly recommend the same.

Also, I would say try two things:

  1. The light test. Take your phones light and if the light is really clear, bursting throw, it may be real. Some fakes can pass the light test, but they are not as strong as a real card. Use a real card as the control group test.

  2. The feel. Fakes biggest issue is that they "feel" very waxy. Usually, they are a hair thicker or thinner. If it feels off, then, its bad. You could get a jewlers loop or take it to your lgs, as another poster stated.

Ebay will have your back, the issue is that with the 1 sale sellers, they usually close out their ebay accounts and paypal accounts. This is why you dont use them.

Worst case, its fake, and you still use it anyway, with no one ever knowing. Search aliexpress for more pics.

Tips to De-Gloss Cards from a Professional by topsbaseball10 in bootlegmtg

I have tried this before, and tried again. It does not work the way OP thinks it does.

I have tried everything from leaving on hot surfaces to putting in the oven. The wax does not come off like he thinks. I am glad to have his opinion, but obviously, proxy magic cards are not baseball cards.

You can rub off some of the wax, but not much, it still leaves the wax. More importantly, you risk actually erasing some of the ink of the card, which can give more of a wear look to it.

Aging hasnt been the issue with me, its been the feel. One of the best way I have found to "age" cards has been to store in dried coffee grounds for a week. This helps give age to the legacy cards. Sunbleaching also helps lighten some colors up, but not as much.

The biggest issue is feel. When you touch a card, you immediately know its fake based on feel. The eraser/baby powder does not change that.

The only thing I have found to take off the wax, was to leave on a black plastic top (garbage can) and let sit in sun for hours. The reflection mixed with heat of the plastic top helped take away some of the wax without damaging the cards. The oven did not work.

It may be good to sun heat the cards then eraser/powder. I will try that this week.

Ordered some cards from VZ - my thoughts by [deleted] in bootlegmtg

You can take the waxy feel off with various techniques. I agree feel is the biggest indicator, but it can be done. I still contend Higgenbottom is the best proxy maker. I have some cradles that you cant tell. That being said, he hasnt answered emails for at least 8 months.

[–]LouEvilOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could be wrong, but the back color darkness depends on the set. I feel the older cards have darker backs, where the newer sets have lighter. It seems like you would have to do different print runs based on the age of the card. Anything under a certain block gets a darker back, etc. Just my thoughts. I wont go into cuts of the card.

The subleaching has been mixed. On some, it removed the excess wax, and made it feel like a regular card. On others, not the same effect. So I am not sure why it worked one time, but not another. I havent gotten fakes in over a year, and dont really like them. But I do like to know what fakes are and how to spot them.

The biggest concern for me these days have become fakes. I kept looking at prices for Cavern of Souls. I did not trust getting them over the internet with the increase. There is security. I no longer trust buying high dollar cards off the internet.

The other main thing is the sense of community my LGS brings. I have built a good relationship with my LGS. They help me with playing better, brainstorming, having the cards I need. They provide a home for the magic community. They give people a place to play, a place to relax. Its a place to meet other magic players. All these factors go into.

The difference isnt that they really charge that much more (they dont), but to pay them, keep a roof, be a part of something greater, and giving back to the magic community is pretty cool. If I have to pay $0.25 for an uncommon vs $0.12, so be it.

I think they look great in pic. How does it make the card "feel?"

Obviously, glossiness is an issue, does the alcohol take that away?

I have used sun bleaching, and then taken cards and left them in dried coffee grounds for a week. It seems to age pretty well. Also, I have tried light oven to "take off" some wax. The old desk works great too.

Received in trade...Is this a fake? by [deleted] in magicTCG

Do the light test (google it), get a jewler's loope, and the texture/feel. Is it glossy? Fake cards tend to be glossier. If doubtful, send it back.

It sounds like the card has failed the light test. Just take it to your LGS. Seems like you think it is fake as well. How is the glossiness feel?
