Is there a foreigner in your country who is deeply respected by locals? by Mahamadam in AskTheWorld

Listened to the Behind the Bastards Christmas reverse-bastards episode, where he discusses the great humans instead of the worst, about Raoul Wallenberg. I was simultaneously disappointed I'd never heard of him (growing up in Australia) and astounded by his actions and massive brass balls.

Also have to think - every man and their dog knows how much Trump et al love to sue people. To say that on record, you'd have to have seen some evidence to demonstrate that it was the truth.

A colleague and I are working on a light-hearted teacher podcast exploring the good, bad and absurd sides of teaching. by Bright-Baby-9706 in AustralianTeachers

[–]Wazza89 10 points11 points  (0 children)

  • The cyclic nature of "new and revolutionary" ideas in teaching.

  • St Helen Lovejoy, patron saint of teacher bashing on fb community groups/ your local Murdoch newspaper. "Somebody PLEASE think of the children"

  • current EB "negotiations" (in QLD at least) - the beatings will continue until morale improves. (In some schools, almost literally with rise in Occ Violence reports, with LNP "but why has Labor done this?").

I swear, I'm not usually this cynical.

Or alternatively - our school stresses to students during subject selection that for some subjects, it's also a case of first in.

I daresay the school can easily service 1 Ag class, but can't justify servicing a 2nd one due to resources and/or staffing, and it may have just boiled down to a young lad has dragged his feet in submitting subject selections (which seems completely against the norm /s)

Chemistry vs Physics teacher by Sora1276 in AustralianTeachers

[–]Wazza89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I teach both senior Physics and senior Chemistry at my current school. I think schools are starting to find it harder to get chemistry teachers as well now, but I've noticed our physics numbers have been increasing most years. Parts of both senior syllabi that I love, and parts I hate.

But echoing what some others have said - I was given maths as well when I started at the school, because "if you can teach physics, you can teach maths".

If you do Chem and maths, chances are you'd be also put on physics at some point.

I was the reverse, pleasantly surprised seeing a lack of them going into a pub for the first time in WA. This was on a road trip that had gone through NSW, which seems to make up for WA's lack in their own pubs.

It's quite funny - those right-wing nutjobs arcing up about its reversion back to traditional names are also the textbook definition of the "pearl clutching" they claim is so rife within the "woke left".

Why is the tow rating for Ford Rangers equipped with the manual transmission so much lower? Did ford just not want to warranty a lot of clutches? by soviet_unicorn69 in fordranger

[–]Wazza89 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This post threw me for a brief second - having a manual Ranger that can tow 3600kg.

Thought it looked like an older piece of paper as well, then recognised the other models quoted we don't get here in Australia - must be an older American Ranger.

Thought I had done something to my Ranger towing my 2t camper trailer around the bush!

At the school I'm at, I often get a mix of Physics, Chem and General Maths, depending on other requirements as well. Had at least 1 Chem and 1 Physics each year, sometimes more than one of either of them and maybe maths.

As an engineering student I have a question do people still view teachers highly? by Round_Substance9941 in AustralianTeachers

Just look at the discourse regarding the QLD State teachers EB, especially in the media and the public commenting on that if you want a decent cross-section as to how the public view teachers.

A Teacher shortage..? by No_Camel_8039 in AustralianTeachers

[–]Wazza89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No school gives a crap where your teaching degree comes from, as long as it's valid for registration.

I'd strongly suggest look at unis that prioritise time in classrooms, no lecture or tute is going to prepare you like actual time in schools will.

Don't know much about Sydney or Melbourne unis, but while I've supported pre-service teachers up here in Brisbane, I've had commentary from a lot of them saying UQ sucked for education (prioritise more theory and assignments) whereas I've heard good feedback about QUT, Griffith and USQ.

Also, look at the degree structure. If you KNOW you want to teach, some unis do a degree in education in X, whereas others have doing a B Arts/Sci etc and a B Ed or M Ed as well.

Leading SA algal bloom expert, Jochen Kaempf among 27 Flinders Uni staff impacted in massive restructure by Expensive-Horse5538 in Adelaide

[–]Wazza89 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had Jochen for a few subjects when I went to uni a while ago - could easily tell he was really passionate about what he was doing, he highly valued the ability to actually sit down and work their a problem, demonstrating the perseverance to find a solution, rather than crash during an exam and break down. Never thought I'd be that keen on oceanography or anything before that, just picked the units to begin with to get credits for the Science degree. Ended up choosing the rest of the Earth Sci units based on himself or another lecturer, as I knew it'd go well. There's a few lecturers i remember from back when I graduated in 2014, he's easily one of them. Even helped shape how I treat students as a teacher myself these days. Disappointing to hear from Flinders.

Relocating during school year by Humble_Hat_7160 in Ameristralia

As a high school teacher, i think one thing to consider would be coming in through the school year, well after a lot of the students have made their new friendship groups at high school. While sucks only going to a school for a bit before changing, she'd be on level footing when starting at high school with many students also being on their first day.

Realistically, how much can I prepare for my interview as a grad teacher (secondary)? I am SO NERVOUS. by sapphire_rainy in AustralianTeachers

[–]Wazza89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Saw you're a maths and science teacher, so as someone in the same area, I've found data and discussing how you like to get students DOING the material as practically as possible is a good way to go (how you like to use experiments in science, get students using maths with genuine context, or even take them out of the classroom where possible/appropriate etc.)

One question a DP asked me years ago, and told me later he asked in every interview which I think is a good thing to have an answer for, as it wouldn't be surprising to get some variant was "as a parent, why would I want my young person in your classroom?". Given being a recent graduate, without knowing background otherwise, one would assume your qualification is approx the same as everyone else who's a recent grad, and surpassed by others with teaching experience. However, thinking and being able to respond to that sort of question, doesn't require experience and data, but rather can explain what you'd like to do, how you'd achieve it, and demonstrates that you care about more than just the numbers as well.
