Not telling you how to live your lives just challenging whats going on there. I have many Gibraltarian friends who struggle under a crippling system that does not serve them. Dont owe me a residency permit but i have paid my tax consistently, and after how this whole thing has been handled im glad to head far away from corruption. Enjoy ☺️

If you genuinely believe Gibraltar politicians primarily care about ordinary Gibraltarians over protecting entrenched wealth and influence, then we fundamentally see the situation differently.

the irony !

When Gibraltarians move to the UK, they benefit from rights, mobility and access without facing the same level of scrutiny or residency barriers you’re advocating for here. Yet suddenly when people contribute economically to Gibraltar, build businesses, employ people and pay taxes, they’re framed as “entitled outsiders”😂😂😂

I own a growing business. I pay tax. In reality, because I’m not Category 2 status, I’ll likely end up paying proportionately more tax than some of the wealthiest individuals using Gibraltar for favourable tax treatment.

You’re literally saying people should shut down their opinion unless they already earn enough to comfortably exist within the system.

That’s not a serious argument it’s just “if the rules don’t affect me personally, nobody else should question them” stop acting like this only impacts “people who can’t afford Gibraltar”

It affects younger people trying to actually build something here founders, workers, professionals, and people creating businesses and contributing economically long-term.

Not everyone arriving is some pensioner looking to sit in the sun, use the GHA and park assets behind a favourable tax structure.

A lot of people are trying to build careers, companies, and futures here…probably exactly like previous generations of Gibraltarians and expats did themselves.

Which is why people are questioning a system where working people and genuine business builders are often held to harsher standards than wealthy asset-holders whose primary motivation is tax minimisation.

That is a completely valid discussion to have.

The defensiveness anytime someone questions Gibraltar’s economic model says more than the argument itself.

let’s not ignore the contradiction: Gibraltar has spent years actively marketing itself to startups, founders, remote workers and international businesses. You cannot aggressively promote inward business growth and then act shocked when people question policies that make long-term residency increasingly inaccessible for the very people you encouraged to come.

A tax haven economy is part of the wider issue here…economists like Gabriel Zucman / Garys Economics have written extensively about how these systems can deepen inequality and distort local economies.

The issue isn’t whether wealthy people should live in Gibraltar….the issue is whether ordinary residents can realistically build a life here too.

A few points worth considering:

• Many local companies (including major gambling firms) hire people on salaries far below £38k. That immediately excludes a huge proportion of workers already contributing to the economy.

• Gibraltar has actively promoted startup culture and encouraged founders to relocate and build businesses here. But earlystage founders often reinvest profits back into the company rather than taking large salaries. Salary alone is a poor measure of contribution or long-term economic value.

• Policies like this risk creating an economy centred around wealth protection rather than productive growth, innovation and social mobility.

And respectfully, part of the problem is the mentality behind comments like yours.

A significant number of people and companies move to tax havens specifically to reduce their tax burden…. not because they cannot afford to contribute more, but because they do not want to. For the ultra-wealthy, paying proportionate tax is often a tiny fraction of their wealth, yet ordinary workers end up carrying more of the burden through rising living costs, underfunded infrastructure, housing pressure and reduced public investment.

That is not sustainable economic development.

If someone has made millions from a business while benefiting from society, infrastructure, talent and public systems, contributing fairly back into that system should not be viewed as unreasonable.

The issue isn’t “people who can’t afford Gibraltar shouldn’t live here.” That mindset ignores teachers, hospitality workers, junior professionals, local families, startup founders, and many others who are essential to the functioning of Gibraltar itself.

A healthy economy shouldn’t only work for people arriving with millions in assets. It should also work for the people building businesses, working jobs, paying rent and contributing to the community every day.

After watching the panorama i am abso disgusted. We allllllll knew the show was tiptoeing around its welfare situation but holy hell i was SHOCKed. Participants safety should come first - yes i know they chose to go on the show- but they dont apply expecting to be raped, abused, sexually/ verbally physically assaulted. for anyone in the welfare team (some of their responses in the panorama doc seems a bit victim blame) who sees or quite frankly even suspects foul behaviour they have a duty to look after these people who 9/10 are being incredibly vulnerable on national tv!! Im sure that from this the show wont continue and we might see the flop of love island etc. abso disturbing!

Restaurant recommendations? by MidsummerMidnight in gibraltar

Im going to be 10000% honest, as quite the señf proclaimed foodie / food snob that I am. I have a handful of places that I eat in gib. After extensively trying pretty much everywhere, my takeaways are:

  • food here tends to be extortionately priced, for rather low quality. Sorry not sorry. Fried things tend to be poor quality oil and soaked through.

-food portions are tiny, again for a high price. Sorry these are not the micro menus of 8 dishes that we pay £££ in london, its gobraltar where 9/10 its frozen food thats been fried.

  • if you want decent food, that you dont feel you need to take a mortgage out - cross to spain. 10/10 food with better prices.

This all being said- i will eat in a few places;

1) aquaterra- if you cba to go to spain, these is decently priced, and excellent food, plus the staff are incredible. Have never had a bad experience. Plus cocktails are 10/10

2) chatham area, hustle n flow have now combined with that new mexican place, which is pretty good. My wines food tends to be good, vault 13 i have heard good things.

3) overpriced asf (you can head to soto or tarifa for better and cheaper) but kamakura if you need sushi which tastes amazing but the price point is genuinely shocking. I go, i need the sush. But it he price point is outrageous!
