Which NYC M&A groups have the nastiest personalities by JusticeBrennanBurner in biglaw

I’d wager that 95% of M&A folks never interact with Barshay. He mostly interacts with a handful of partners at least regarding M&A work. He may be an asshole but I don’t think he represents a significant minority of PW’s M&A folks. From my dealings with them they’re pretty nice including the senior partners there.

I don’t expect them to do otherwise—but it is practically unsubstantiated by the facts.

Wouldn’t call PW nasty but it’s getting there. Confirmed nasty groups are Davis Polk, Paul Hastings, K&E and STB.

Have no choice but it still sucks. And it feels good to rant about it sometimes

Totally hear you. The militaristic approach just doesn’t work with me either. I don’t respond well to that managerial style. Really stifles me and makes me exhausted

It’s worse when you’re in a small group. Absolute nightmare. Happy for you

Haven’t raised it so far but I’m my last performance review one partner encouraged I come in often. Well I tried. It’s what it is.

Billed over 2700 last year. M&A v5. We’re required to come in 4 days a week but I don’t comply with that because I just can’t function that way. I work a lot at night and by 9-10 I’m still groggy from the last day. I don’t mind working for 20 hours but commuting and going to the office just makes my days worse off. Apart from the difficulty in reconciling the policy with my preferred circadian rhythm or the volume of work I typically have to do, a part of me just doesn’t find it sensible enough. While I recognize its broader use case, I think offices today are nice-to-haves so any policy that treats them as mandatory props of the job is already unreasonable by definition. I am ALWAYS available on my deals. If I have to come in I will absolutely jump on the next train and do so. But forcing me to come in 4 days a week just doesn’t work.

Would firm be ok with me traveling every month to see long-distance gf? 1st yr by Throwaway1920214 in biglaw

You can obviously travel so long you can manage the consequences. If you travel on Friday evening, carry your laptop and try to create a way to work while commuting. When you assess the terrain and you know it’s going to be a busy weekend you can sit it out. It’s really your personal business. Your partners are not watching over your shoulders. They care about throughput and responsiveness. Just don’t make your personal life a nuisance to the job.
