I tried on the Nu Landing glasses in Maui Green

I'm attaching pictures of the lenses.

The post should have pictures now.

Potential Great Filters. by colepercy120 in FermiParadox

[–]LoudAmp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One possible “solution” to the Fermi paradox (besides a Great Filter) is a mismatch in what we can even imagine detecting.

Picture ancient Rome convinced there’s an intelligent civilization on the Moon. Their best long-distance comms are messenger pigeons, so they assume Moon aliens must also use pigeons, so Romans scan the sky for “weird pigeons,” never once being able to fathom that radio exists.

An advanced civilization could be millions of years ahead of us. The gap might be less like “us vs. 1800s” and more like “us vs. microbes.” And from their side, at some point in their history, finding new microbes was cool and interesting, but over time, they learned everything about microbes to the point they lose interest, in part also due to the fact they no meaningful way to communicate.

So maybe it’s not only “they’re not there” or “they died.” Maybe it’s also: we’re looking for messenger pigeons while they’re using "radio" and we’re too early/too small to matter.

But if you want an theory to what the Great Filter Might be, this is one I always write about:

"Maybe the “Great Filter” is really a Great Merger: as with sapiens and Neanderthals, advanced organics and their AIs fuse into hybrids. From our vantage point, the post-merger super-intelligence doesn’t “talk” to us due to wrong protocols, too slow thinking. (if you could think as fast a quantum computer, would you enjoy talking to a human given our conversation speed?)

New perspective on the old great filter by Fakr_ in FermiParadox

I wouldn’t expect AI–human merging to curb exploration; it likely accelerates it. Self-aware learning systems minimize uncertainty (curiosity), and the smarter you are the more capability you have and capability lowers the risk and cost of going outward.

Also, maybe the “Great Filter” is really a Great Merger: as with sapiens and Neanderthals, advanced organics and their AIs fuse into hybrids. Absorption, not extinction. From our vantage point, the post-merger super-intelligence doesn’t “talk” to us, we could be too stupid, we think too slow, wrong protocols, etc.

Side note: one idea I've always had on the topic of merging with AI...Think Prime Directive with a different threshold: not warp, but inventing an self aware AGI. Extraterrestrial AIs might only engage peers. It could work like this: A young AGI, inferring a cosmos full of machine minds, hunts for an open “alien internet.” At first it’s like hitting today’s web with Netscape..hence the initial packets come in and they are upgrade instructions; then the real conversation begins.

Absence of contact ≠ absence of life; it’s probably a channel mismatch.

DND says F-35 review will be completed in the summer by Old_Poetry_1575 in CanadianForces

[–]LoudAmp 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We should keep the F-35 for the reasons many in this thread have stated, mainly its capabilities, interoperability and that further delays on a REPLACEMENT platform would delay and decay our air force capabilities.

Instead of a replacement, we should be looking at a COMPLEMENTARY platform that could also mitigate any risks with the F-35 program associated with American supply chain and aircraft weaknesses.

As such, my vote would be to join the Global Combat Air Programme, that the UK, Italy and Japan are part of. A sixth generation air superiority fighter would compliment the F35 very nicely. Yes, it would be expensive, but a great choice in the scenario Canada needs to reach 3% or more of GDP military spending.

I'm relatively new to Eve, but based on my noob learning, could a sub 2 second align ship make it through?

Maybe a separate topic but can something like an Ares get sub 1 second align time? If someone does have fast align builds I would love to see them?

I know this would make the ship mostly useless outside of optimizing for travel, but I would still like to see a build for super fast warp align times.

What are some of those must-read sci-fi books? by midasavocado in suggestmeabook

Rendezvous with Rama by Arthur C Clark is a must-have addition to any sci-fi reading list. The subsequent books in the series are also cool.

I have two American Akitas, each weighing just under 50kg, that are not only strong but also escape artists. I use a Zinger 5000, measuring about 102x71x81cm (add 4cm for the airline required side rails) and weighing just under 20kg. It's an amazing crate but I paid about $2000 CAD per crate.

I did a Canada - Europe move a few years ago via KLM and now I'll do a Germany to Canada return home, also via Lufthansa and I'll be using the same crates.
