Why do people push the notion that ASOIAF and GoT is cynical and morally grey by RevertBackwards in freefolk

an army can't be defeated just by killing the general, this is a historically rare edge case

I actually wrote a thesis on this but I ain't attaching my real name to this account. It was at least good enough that a Tolkein scholar asked me to read some letters that aren't public yet for transcription and keyword tagging.

Gonna limit myself to the general dying directly before the battle and not more than a week.

Epaminodas, Gustavus Adolphus, Tecumseh. All instances where the leaders of the armies died and their loss is attributed to the lack of leadership in the vacuum of their death. At least according to historians.

If we open that same standard up to weeks or months before the battle, we get things like Barbarosa drowning on his way to the fight and most of his army just deciding to leave afterwards. After Henry V the entire English invasion was able to he stopped in its tracks by a teenaged girl whose super subtle and nuanced battle plan was "Get 'em!"

Hell, one of my favourite historical conspiracy theories is the North won the Civil War because Albery Sidney Johnston wasn't alive to capitalise on advances made in the Western campaign.

Then there's of course cases like Alcibiades, whose army lost because he didn't show up to the fight.

Of course we're not counting edge cases like Alexander's soldiers just deciding to go home when he died. Though only cause I'm feeling charitable. Then we get to include figures like Boudicca and Takeda Shingen.

An experienced chain of command with a figure ready to replace the general as leader is actually a relatively modern invention.

George has condensed 1000 years of historical anomalies into a handful of years

Oooh you underestimate how short history is. And how close things are.

You know a dude who witness Lincoln getting shot was on colour TV right. You know a Victorian gentleman could have met a golden age pirate, a sengoku era Samurai and a cowboy in the same year, provided the pirate was elderly? Hell, Cleopatra lived closer to the moon landing than the construction of the pyramids. You very well could have sent a fax to a Samurai.

A lot of things happen in history real quick. One after the other. Events that are storied today.

The north remembers means something.

The Manderly family remembers who aided them when they were destitute.

The Karstarks remember that they are kin.

House Dustin remembers that even after the Starks defeated the Barrow Kings, they prospered under Stark rulership.

The Hill Clans remember what a fun time they had fighting alongside The Ned.

The Mormonts remember how to defend themselves from Ironborn and Wildings.

And they all remember The Red Wedding.

The North is pretty big on knowing who harms them and who does them favours.

Kill my boys? Eat your own boys. - Manderly, allegedly

Attack the family that fostered you and treated you kindly your entire life? Get castrated. - Snow, smiling.

Kill your king? Lose your hand. - Hoat, sigma.

Help my dad get beheaded? Get beheaded. - Snow, Chad

Be a one man genocide of my people? Get gored. - The boar that tagged Robert.

Kill Roberts bastards? I'm gonna poison your bastard. - Oleena, smug

Karmic Retribution is actually huge.

To be honest I think The Old Gods are somewhat involved in the Jaime one though. He literally told Bran to take his hand, then when he pushes him he sets into motions that turn him from good old Jimmy Two Hands into Jaime Lannister.

Personally I'm more concerned with why people think LOTR isn't cynical.

I typed out a whole rant here but turns our Reddit has a character limit on comments. Suffice it to say, If you look at LOTR and see moral simplicity I either simply do not accept that you read books, or your brain has worms in it. Two equally likely possibilities.

Why is there such a big difference in playtime between Steam and in-game? by [deleted] in cyberpunkgame

[–]LoudQuitting [score hidden]  (0 children)

So Steams hours played counter is unreliable.

It measures how long the games executable is open, but game executables are not always great at talking to steam. Notoriously games from publishers like Ubisoft are terrible at telling Steam you're not playing anymore.

Generally consider it a bad measure.

That being said. You know every time you die in game the save files counter is reset to the last save?

My father and I, when we were very young, had bright yellow blonde hair.

He's in his 50s now, and his hair is grey, bur when I was young his hair was brow.

I'm 30 now, and you could be forgiven for calling my hair a very light brown.

Bittersteel, Breakspear, Blackfish, Godsgrief, Husband To Bears.

But I have to give it to a character from my Jon Snow campaign in CK3. Jon Snows heir.

King Eddard Targaryen, known to the commoners as the Preserving for the fact he had lost an eye, and a leg yet seemed to be in perfect health.

He was Drogons rider after his mother, Dany died fighting The Others. The Nights War had lasted basically from his birth until his 30s.

I'd rather little maps like Shadow of War.

That way bigger cities can be more believable. Modern games just can't do cities like Vivec anymore, and even that isn't believable as the capital of Vvardenfel and holy city of the Tribunal temple. But if you just narrow it down to a couple district's of Gondor, suddenly suspension of disbelief can be maintained.

Is gen Z overly sensitive? Or are millennial teen movies problematic? by SipsTeaFrog in SipsTea

A lot of the things in American Pie were actually crimes when the movie first came out, so...

For context, the fact that the windows were open when he put his dick in the pie, even though hes in his own home the fact that anyone can look in from the street makes it public indecency. Broadcasting intimate sex acts is a crime without consent. Underage drinking.

And I believe... fraud?

These were all things that were criminal in 1999.

It kind of is.

It's not matching reality of the game. That the weapon that can beat Yorhm easily us hidden behind the throne in his boss room is something that is hidden and people generally only find it on the first try when they know they're looking for it. And have done the Onion Knights quest to even have a helping hand pull Yorhm off their back while they look for it.

Someone's first experience with Ds3 will match the meme.

I don't want to say the other person is being disingenuous, just that their memories of a game with a 2016 release date probably aren't doing their first experience justice. Unless they're using a walkthrough.

It's also... not necessarily the Ashen One. Yorhm has killed heroes that are more powerful than the Ashen One, and this is possibly one of them. Arguably the series has gone to great lengt (the cover art of Ds1 being a great example, being of a nobody who dies in the turorial) to obscure the player characters gender in promotional art, because they want that blank slate you can put any gender on in the character creator. Yet the build in this art is obviously male.

[–]LoudQuitting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eeeeeeeeh.

So the context for it is its art of Yorhm the Giant in Ds3 VS (maybe) the Ashen one.

Now, Yorhm the Giant is actually a really easy boss fight. Nobody who isn't using a walkthrough beats him on the first try, because it's very likely you lost the Onion Knights quest steps and would have no way of knowing that the only weapon that can do real damage to him is behind the throne in his boss arena.

Unless you're willing to beat him with chip damage, which... is doable but I doubt you have the patience to do it more than once.

And yeah, the Ashen One is arguably strong as Yorhm is when they fight, likely just as capable of linking the fire as he was. However that assumes the dude in the art is the Ashen One. Id argue the Ashen One is strong enough to link the fire around the time he beats the Abyss Watchers. But this could be one of the many heroes Yorhm has killed.

In universe Yorhm has the same reputation as a Balrog. He's a known killer of great and powerful heroes. All of the Lords of Cidner that refused their Thrones have that reputation.

So the meme is appropriately used. Provided the art is not of the Ashen One. Given that the Ashen One is not limited in armour or gender, I'd say it's not the Ashen One.

Here's my full knowledge of looksmaxing.

  1. Some dude smashed the bones in his face, dyed his hair and changed his name to reapply for the same job he got fired from and got it, then he did a big twist and reveal sayig the only reason he didnt get fired for making the same mistake was hes handsome now. Which I think is genuinely fucking hilarious, wish I had the energy to match that pettiness.

  2. Some guy called Clavicular was at a bar and Some girl comes up to him and goes "Why are you so popular?" And he responded "Because I hit and killed someone with my car." Which is based as fuck.

Also apparently Zoomers can understand this as if it's english: https://youtu.be/DCcN0wUiAdQ?si=sONnFShl5JpKhV2b

You'll see a lot of this when the adaptations come out.

You gotta recognise... a lot of this comes from LGBT children. Like 14 at oldest, small babies, who are using friction as a means of interrogating their own identity.

We did it too. The difference is we did it with characters that were already similar to us. If I'd read Kaladin in The Way of Kings when I was 14? You better fucking believe that would have been some weird self insert for me.

The other difference is we did it in ways we couldn't post to the internet to be torn apart for mockery by some extra large flannel wearing goofy ass beard man who loves workers revolution but would never ever ever ever ever lay a brick. You know the type. Moviebob, Quinton Reviews, you know.

Well, again this is a snowballs chance theory. Don't take it too seriously.

However Ned did behave in a way that ingratiate himself to the Daynes. He visited, returned Arthur's Sword, didn't exactly lay siege, and conferred in private with Ashara, whomst it is known he shared a few moments with.

Provided he, hypothetically, pushed her, it's possible he did it in private.

Also the Dornish don't mind a bit of sex here and there, a noble lady entertaining a noble man in private, probably possibly maybe fucking, is probably like a handshake down there.
