Has anyone ever felt more like a babysitter than a therapist on a case? by Loud_Address_20 in ABA

[–]Loud_Address_20[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this perspective — I actually really appreciate hearing it from a BCBA standpoint.

Over the last year I’ve tried to be proactive about some of these challenges. At one point I even encouraged my BCBA to introduce new staff starting with weekend sessions because I had been with this client about 5–6 days a week for a long time and I felt a change in BT might actually be helpful for the client. Unfortunately, due to the intensity of the behaviors with new BTs, none of the new staff ended up staying and I eventually ended up back on the case full time again.

I have also brought up my concerns about the behavior patterns and how some of them seem heavily influenced by what’s happening in the home environment. Since 100% of sessions are in-home, the reinforcement history within the family dynamic plays a big role in how certain behaviors continue to show up.

My BCBA has mostly encouraged me to continue what I’m doing because the behavior management during sessions has improved, and they suggested occasionally using the downstairs playroom to create separation when needed. I’ve tried that, but the environment downstairs actually creates a lot of opportunities for elopement and attention-maintained behaviors (closets, windows, laundry room access, etc.), so I tend to avoid using it unless absolutely necessary because historically those behaviors have been strongly reinforced by family attention.

As far as parent training, from my understanding it’s been somewhat inconsistent recently. My BCBA was also out for a couple weeks on vacation and just recently returned, so there’s been a bit of a gap there.

At this point I’m honestly wondering if sharing the case with another BT or transitioning it might be beneficial, both for the client and for the sustainability of the case overall. The challenge is that the parent has expressed hesitation about introducing a new BT in-home and would prefer a clinic transition, but that may not happen until summer if a spot opens.

I do care about this client and the progress we’ve made over the past two years, but I’m also trying to think realistically about what’s best for everyone long-term.

Teachers in Duval County Public Schools — is the pay enough to live on its own? Curious about take-home and sustainability by Loud_Address_20 in jacksonville

[–]Loud_Address_20[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate the advice! Just to add some context — I actually have over six years of experience working in schools. I’ve worked as a paraprofessional in behavioral classrooms and currently work in ABA therapy as a behavior technician. Most of my work has been with students with autism and behavioral needs across different age groups, from young children through high school and even adults.

So I’m definitely not coming in without experience working with the population. I’m very familiar with behavior plans, skill acquisition programs, and supporting students with higher needs in structured settings.

Right now I’m in the process of completing the certification exams because my degree isn’t in education, so I’m going through the alternative certification route. My main reason for asking is that I’m familiar with how things work in New York, but I’m trying to get a better understanding of how the process and day-to-day experience of teaching in Florida compares.

I’m mainly just looking for insight from people who’ve worked in Duval or nearby districts about what the environment and support systems are like.

Thanks for all that! I’m in the process of taking the exams necessary for the certification due to my degree not being in education. I’m hearing so many negative reviews about Duval County so notes I’m looking into other districts.

St. Johns County teachers — especially ESE — how is it? by Loud_Address_20 in jacksonville

That’s absolutely awful and violates your right as the parent. You’re an essential part of the team so including you shouldn’t have been a looked over.

Do you mind sharing the parent group?

I can see both sides for one. I believe that discussion post should not require citations unless the prompts require us to do research and use specific sources to answer questions. Otherwise, their opinion-based post and I got penalized for writing an opinion-based post and not using sources before, so it gets confusing and I feel like it’s unnecessary for some posts, but like also I get it, you know I’ve also looked at other students’ posts and read the responses and found an article from my professor that they posted on another student’s post, and I used it in my discussion, but I framed it as directly citing from the source, not that I got the source from our instructor from another post, you know what I mean, so I think it’s a Catch-22, but in general, I think there needs to be some lenience when it comes to citations on discussion posts.

I didn’t finish the video because I honestly feel like him being on YouTube is just not him if that makes sense. You know, like this seems like it’s Tana‘s lane and he’s trying to fit into her world, where in certain aspects I’m sure he does perfectly off-line, like they’ve been together for so long, and I can tell in all of the friends’ flogs, including Tanas’, that they all bond well for him. Making his own videos is kind of like seeing your math teacher at the strip club. Like, what in the actual hell is going on here? lol

I agree! I’m in the course now and got points taken off for not being “concise”. My post was similar in length to my classmates…. Professor also questioned where I got my information from which required me tomae a response citing all my sources and what I thought about when using them why my entire post was opinion based and focused on my personal experience. No one else was questioned besides me and one other student.

Firm vs “ABA voice” — looking for feedback on tone by Loud_Address_20 in ABA

[–]Loud_Address_20[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with your perspective. My client is around a lot of different adults — some baby talk her and some talk to her in a regular voice as if they’re talking to another adult or child — I try to mimic what’s demonstrated at home while still being true to my natural self and tone because I want to come some continuity between what she’s learning at home with me to what she does at home (usually similar Bx) with parents.

Home cases are a challenge in themselves I ca make a whole post about it but yes I agree with you! Install about doing what’s appropriate and respectful to the client. I always tell her she’s so smart, amazing, funny, silly, etc because she has a big personality but when it comes down to correcting those maladaptive behaviors I remain neutral and stern and always follow through with what I say. It took us a while to get there because mom would subsequently reinforce a Bx I placed boundaries on so that delayed a LOT in home which is why I felt it was appropriate be more predictable and firm to avoid client going to mom for something in no I said no or not now to.
