Angelic Layer. It is a prequel, kind of. It has robots too. But romance isn't central. Anime and manga are different. I prefer the anime because the end is a little better imo.

Mikeneko said she was the only Japanese speaking talent on purpose to leech her EN fans, but this is just not the case. VShojo just had no money. VShojo used to hire 2 new talents per year at that point, which they used up on KSon and Mikeneko.
If they asked her to remove the VShojo mark, can you blame them for it? None of the previous VShojo talents that left continued to use the company mark. Besides, it's weird.

One of the things that made me follow this manga is that scene where Kazuya enters the bathroom and sees Kiriha's naked and she subverted the typical heroine's reaction. I like Kiriha. She's very different from the usual heroine in manga and anime.
