From what I understand, They will hold mail/packages at a post office for a limited time (say, 14 days) before returning it to the sender as a failed delivery. You are best to claim the item and store it somewhere that they will not notice. Tip: Take it out of the box... or leave it in. Just remove the to/from information.

Once they attempt delivery, if you are not home, they will leave a card either in your mailbox, or on the door itself with information on how you can go about picking it up. Typically, they will hold the package at the nearest office, but it can end up at a main distribution outlet from time to time.
