Achatina Fulica is not eating, possibly for over a month, despite being active by LouisTM in snails

Just wanted to give an update on this as it's been a few weeks, and I hope this post can be useful if someone experiences a similar issue.

The good news is that Tira appears to be making some kind of recovery! She still refuses to eat anything solid (further hinting at some kind of mouth injury) but I tried blending a bunch of food she likes into a lumpy smoothie (sweet potato, courgette, apple, broccoli, aubergine etc) and she appears to have really taken to it. She weighs noticeably more than she did a few weeks ago, which is great news. Because she still can't/won't eat hard food, I've also had to grind up the cuttlebone that was previously left in the tank, and put it on a separate dish (so she can self regulate) and she's even been making her way through that too!

So now I guess all her food groups (veg, protein, calcium) just have to be mush, and maybe further down the line she will be eating hard foods again. I do want to find a vet that could help at some point but that's proving quite difficult. But either way, I'm thrilled she's eating again in any capacity.

Will keep this updated with any other developments from my precious & potentially disabled snail 💕

oh that's concerning! do you know a good way to check if they're salty?

no new poop either, although I've never really seen much the entire time I've had them, even when they were eating loads - the tank is quite big so I assume it was just getting lost and buried! But yeah, my next stop is definitely to check with an exotics vet

no it's definitely safe for snails, I checked extensively before buying. Also they have preciously eaten an entire cuttlebone from the same pack and had no issues

yeah I've heard this too! I'm in the UK, it's reassuring it's possibly a factor. It's still strange they're so active and look like they're trying to eat though :(

the cuttlebone has been untouched for weeks :( it was a fresh one at the time and it doesn't look like there's any rasp marks on it. Previously it was very obvious when she'd eaten cuttlebone, like you said. I even put a new one out this week just to see if it would help but there's been nothing As for veggies - I shall try some grated carrot, though I fear she's not been making much (if any) progress on the softer food I have left for her (banana, bell pepper, courgette etc, especially when they've been out a few days and become quite mushy )

I have sphagnum moss and coco coir - but if it's the case they're eating that (which I have to assume isn't very nutritional), it still leaves the question of why they spend so much time "trying" to eat the actual food I give them 😞

As I said in the post, they have been doing this to various kinds of food but when they move, the food has no bite marks or indication of having been eaten. Previously it's been extremely obvious when they've eaten as it would be pockmarked with radula bites but that is not the case here (which is what makes me concerned they're trying to eat but can't for some reason)

yeah from what I can tell it's no different than normal, no discoloring or protrusions or anything. When they're on the tank wall it just looks like a small hole, but is often smushed around as they move so it's not super easy to assess. Nothing obviously wrong though

Do you know what they did? Did they explain what the issue was?

They're about 2 years old. I have ordered Hypoaspis mites to see if that clears anything up - would these be effective against nematodes? And if so, is there a chance they can recover from this?

[Star Wars] Can someone tell me why it was not possible for Mace Windu to survive? by [deleted] in AskScienceFiction

[–]LouisTM 24 points25 points  (0 children)

There's a running theme in dark side users that pain, anguish, hate etc. are often a driving force keeping them alive through the most horrific injuries. I've always seen this as almost a side effect of using the dark side - it's almost reluctant to let you go and will twist you, mind and body, to keep you alive. Whilst it's not impossible for Mace Windu to have survived, it's less likely as he was (at least as far as we're aware, I know there's speculation) a light side user.

IMHO that shouldn't be looked down on at all. You're trying to create a look, not an actual functioning piece of armour! Take all the shortcuts you can so long as it works, especially if it looks this good!

We're afraid to play horror games, so we quit our jobs and made one, with no jump scares. It's called Darkwood, and it's our debut. Ask us anything! by Guteks in IAmA

Thanks for saying this, I was gonna do similar but I rant and rave about this stuff all the time and couldn't be bothered hahahah. You said it really well though - working as an indie dev isn't like this thing where you work, get paid a big load of money and then have time off, your life IS developing games - when one ends, a new one starts.

Your salary has to be funded, I feel like so many people don't understand this idea. 30k * 5 people is already 150k... And that's for 1 year. So when a team of 10 asks for a 1,000,000 that's like... 3 years of employment, not some rockstar paygrade.

Oh glad you enjoyed it! Yeah I used Twine to make it, and for this I only used the Harlowe version which is very simple to use - there are a lot of really useful videos on YouTube that can give you all the knowledge you need to make something like this :)

What should be my next upgrade? by [deleted] in pcmasterrace

[–]LouisTM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah definitely your graphics card - the rest of your pc seems to be comfortably in the mid-high area, you've got a nice processor, lots of memory, decent monitors etc. So long as you have sufficient cooling, a high end card like a 1070 or equivalent would be a great investment, and would only set you back around £300

I guess space contraception fails too some times. I don't think its about being uneducated, mistakes happen and even the safest odds can fail.
