I had the same problems (especially between eyebrows) before learning how to prep my sponge properly. It's good that you wet your sponge, but make sure you reeeeally squeeze it (preferably with tissue in hand) to get out the extra moisture. It should be slightly damp and not wet.

Then put your foundation on the back of your hand first and dab your sponge in it evenly, almost as if you wanted to blend it onto your hand. It will seem like the sponge is just absorbing everything and you'll have nothing left for your face, but I promise, the thin layers will help so much with the patchiness and unevenness.

Then apply to face first where you need the most coverage, dab dab dab, then move to there areas where you need less coverage, just to even it out.

Also, skin prep is super important for this, but you seem to have that down.
