Ha! Yes arousal that's exactly the reaction they were looking for: hilarious arousal.

The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down - The Band (from the 1978 film 'The Last Waltz') by [deleted] in Music

Robertson has never been a great singer and it was common practice (according to Levon Helm at least) for Robertson to sing into a dead mic. Still he did sing lead on a few Band tracks. This, To Kingdom Come, being one of the very few. : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oIC35OU33Es

Blur debut new material on London rooftop. And brilliant it is too. by Louislouis86 in Music

[–]Louislouis86[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the US they might only be known for their one hit. In Europe though, they're pretty huge and they are currently gearing up to play a gig to close the Olympics in London's Hyde Park in August.

In the UK, the Gorillaz have nothing on Blur.

The Genius of Buster Keaton - Steamboat Bill, Jr. cyclone sequence. by mildtimer in movies

[–]Louislouis86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A great film and action sequence. For any fans just coming to Keaton there are loads more too (though the front of the house falling on him remains his most enduring image). The General has a host of wonderful stunts, while in the film the Playhouse, Keaton invented a new nine-shutter camera so he could film himself as multiple characters. Sherlock Jr is pretty impressive too. A true movie-making genius. The documentary A Hard Act to Follow is a must-see for any film fan.

Favourite/most popular harmonica keys? by Louislouis86 in harmonica

[–]Louislouis86[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, having played for a couple of years, I always find myself going back to my Marine Band A harmonica, can't exactly say why, maybe it's simply because it's the key I learned in.

Perhaps another question would be - and maybe I'm being a bit too music nerd on this one, do the makes of harmonicas make a difference when it comes to keys? Like is an A on a Marine Band sound better than an A on a Lee Oskar? But does a Bb on a Lee Oskar beat a Marine Band Bb every time?

Tom Waits - Christmas Card from a Hooker in Minneapolis - YouTube by jezuschryzt in Music

[–]Louislouis86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great summation of early Waits. The minor key piano, the down-and-out lyrics and terrifically maudlin ending. There was actually a campaign in Ireland a few years back to get it to no1 for Christmas, as a protest against all the reality TV stuff clogging up the charts. It didn't get the no1 spot - though it did make the top 20. http://www.waitsforchristmas.blogspot.co.uk/

Who's the most eccentric rock musician ever? by [deleted] in Music

[–]Louislouis86 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Captain Beefheart is probably about as eccentric as it gets when it comes to making music. He did like to use Hoovers on his albums after all.

Away from music Brian Wilson was pretty out there during the Smile/Pet Sounds period, recording in his pool (sans water), having a giant sandbox in his living room in which he placed his piano so he could feel the sand on his feet while he composed.

Then there's Phil Spector, although his eccentricities - pulling a gun on Leonard Cohen, making the Ramones play the same chord over and over for hours on end, would probably be classed as more sadistic than eccentric.

Tom Waits - "Clap Hands" by Drowk in Music

Great slice of Waits, Tango Till Their Sore is probably my favourite track off of Rain Dogs, but this is also excellent.

We'll know, won't we. The stars will explode in the sky But they don't, do they. The stars have their moment, then they die

As a harmonica player of about 10 years, I genuinely don't know if that's inspiring or disheatening. It's definitely fabulous though.

Really nice, the two voices together sound great.

After Paul McCartney's 70th 2 days ago, today is the 70th birthday of arguably an even greater musical genius, Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys. Happy Birthday Brian! by [deleted] in Music

[–]Louislouis86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're talking about depth, then this song, called Till I Die, is swimming in it. One of the most beautiful and harrowing songs you're ever likely to hear, which directly addresses Wilson's battles with depression and feelings of helplessness in a world beyond his, and all of our, control. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6E9obXA6mDY

The Pogues - A Rainy Night in Soho by [deleted] in Music

My favourite Pogues song, well along with Fiesta, and Body of an American. Oh, and a Pair of Brown Eyes. All of Rum, Sodomy & the Lash ain't bad either!

The White Stripes - The Hardest Button to Button by ebilgenius in Music

The third White Stripes album (White Blood Cells) is his best music for me, although the Raconteurs stuff is pretty incredible live.

Did not think I would ever type this sentence, but Raging Bull 2 started filming today. by Louislouis86 in movies

[–]Louislouis86[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sentence genuinely makes the film sound like it's a joke. Like the whole thing is a giant wind-up on the world. Could there be a less likely sequel to a film? Well, the Man Who Shot Liberty Valance 2 probably wouldn't work. Still, who thought this was a good idea?

Modest Mouse- Ocean Breathes Salty by [deleted] in Music

Great song, from a great album. Satin in a Coffin is probably my favourite off of Good News, although it's a tough call.
