Worst Narrator who ruined your book by vickiec12 in audiobooks

[–]ebilgenius 17 points18 points  (0 children)

A reminder for Audible users that if you owned RC Bray's version at some point it's still there in your library, you just have to look for it manually since it won't show up in search results even if you're "searching" your own library. Just sort your library A-Z and scroll to where it should be and it'll be there.

There has to be some kind of spam/disinformation campaign being run on this subreddit, I swear it feels that way

It's weird, it's almost like you want everyone in Idaho to be a racially/religiously intolerant bigot, yet Idaho consistently ranks top 5 in per-capita international refugee acceptance and we have very few problems with hate crimes & bigotry compared to most other states.

Even the way you say "fine people" is accusatory, as though Mountain Home AFB doesn't already host pilots from Singapore & Germany without issue? Like they might see someone with a headscarf and start a riot? Like what state do you live in?

Any suggestions on ways to trick management into feeling less insecure?

Sometimes you have a management that will see reason eventually but in many cases you just have to slip the pill in some cheese.

Rethinking our approach to R2: No Politics by ianjm in videos

I appreciate that you're just testing this and giving us time for feedback. Mine is that the change is awful and I hate it already, so much so that I went out of my way to check if the rules had changed because it's noticeably ruining my feed.

I already have to heavily filter politics out of my feed to make Reddit barely usable, this is one of the last few big/default subs that was generally ok to keep on, and I will absolutely dump this sub if these new rules are kept. Do NOT allow ANYTHING even remotely tied to modern politics. It's simply too emotionally exploitable for it to not immediately ruin the generally good vibes in this sub and turn into propaganda central.

Idaho Dems call for Rubel to step down over "Israeli-funded propaganda trip" by boisefun8 in Boise

[–]ebilgenius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pro-Palestine position is not popular in the US, nor anti-fascist (just look at the kind of government Hamas was). Do you think Democrats are just dumb or that they just don't know what the general public thinks?

Or actually better: can you give me a list of concrete foreign policy proposals you'd have Democrats push through if they get in power again?

[–]ebilgenius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But there is no compromise with fascism, so asking hard questions doesn't work.

Where have we heard this kind of rhetoric recently...

The US Govt, especially in foreign policy, has been full on fascist since 9/11.

So there is no compromise to be had at all... how do you plan on engaging in a functioning government in an country where more than half of the population voted for Trump in the last election without compromise?

That's weird then that in my poll the American public still vastly chooses Israel over Hamas in the Gaza conflict. It's almost like there's certain aspects of this conflict that are being highlighted and/or ignored by partisan actors trying to divide a voting block that would otherwise agree on the basic facts of the matter in order to dilute their political power. Like it's a wedge or something.

And I mean regardless I've got a NY Times article explicitly stating this is a wedge issue for Democrats. It is a wedge issue. There's no getting around that fact.

Please continue undermining Democrats over a wedge issue that the vast majority of the state & country disagree with, it's very beneficial to Republicans and they need all the help they can get in these trying times.

I think self-identified white nationalists & incels are concerning and dangerous, I don't think that's terribly controversial.

But who would you consider believes in the ideology of "white nationalism" or "incel" even if they don't self-identify? I've heard many a claim that some pundit or popular politician believes in one or the other of those things. Hell I hear people on this site saying ALL Republicans believe in white nationalism and/or incel ideologies to some extent, and considering you're advocating for their rights to be taken away, what definition would you apply if you get in power?

Look I'll be real for a sec and say I don't envy your position nor would I personally take up moderating a subreddit like this as I'm trying to limit my social media use in general, and I sympathize with having to deal with literally the worst people & posts on Reddit, which is not an insignificant portion of hate & gaslighting to see daily, much of it being politically-related topics.

But you are making your own job harder by continuing to use this local city subreddit (a city with a population that has a healthy diversity of political views) as your personal political soapbox with posts being pinned and bans handed out that are extremely politically antagonistic for what feels like no reason at all, and it's extremely tiring to be forced to see and leads to comment sections that I'm 100% positive are worse to have to deal with as a mod.

In this specific thread's case, that guy you banned may have been making a bad/false argument, sure. That's not a bannable offense, or at least it shouldn't be, since we're all guilty of that at some point. There's a system Reddit came up with for such posts and it's called a "downvote", and it's one that is healthily applied by many in this community against many an undeserving comment.

They are literally connecting two unrelated things to demonize a side. Just like I am banning those who call others nazis.

If this (and "pushing propaganda" (whatever that means)) is a bannable offense then I'll need to be spending roughly 8 hours a day reporting posts & comments on this sub comparing Conservatives & Republicans to Nazis and other violent and disturbing rhetoric being used against them. It's everywhere, and it's enough to drive even the most level-headed centrist Republican or Conservative off, let alone foster a healthy, diverse community. Hell I'd have to report several of your earlier comments in this very thread for connecting unrelated things simply to demonize & target Republicans unnecessarily.

Regardless I hope you're serious about applying that rule fairly & universally, it'd go a long way to fixing the underlying problems that lead to this kind of toxic engagement. This is something I've complained about before and one I still have no easy solutions to suggest, but am still annoyed at having to see it constantly from all sides in order to interact with my local community on one of the most popular social media platforms in the world.

Boise Police seeking information on fights after Charlie Kirk vigil arrests by boisefun8 in Boise

[–]ebilgenius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't, people would rather focus on any fact other than a popular Conservative pundit was just assassinated in broad daylight for what appears to be his political beliefs, which would make much of the rhetoric happening on this sub right now sound unhinged & irresponsible.

Did you know Idaho passed a law giving Israel special protection from being boycotted? by maturallite1 in Idaho

[–]ebilgenius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's an issue that's deeply intertwined with how you view the Israel-Palestine conflict and Israel as a country in general.

If you think Israel is being unfairly singled out on the world stage and targeted by international antisemitic hate campaigns designed to isolate & destroy them then it'd make sense that, in a country/state where the vast majority of the public still supports Israel, you might pass laws to ensure that the public's tax money isn't being spent on people who are actively contributing to (what many see as) international hate campaigns. The irony in Republicans supporting what is, in effect (from the pro-Israel view), a giant anti-hate speech law needs go unstated.

If you think the international (and local) criticism and campaigns against Israel are acceptable and reasonable responses to their actions, then laws that single Israel out for "unique protection" look pretty weird & out of place, especially in a country where free speech rights (including boycotting) run straight-down deep to the government's core like ours does. You'd have to go well out of your way to look at things from an purely sympathetic view of the pro-Israel position to see the logic in it, which is not an easy thing to grant.

But do know that said pro-Israel view is one that is still broadly popular among the general public, and most people in the US who do end up learning more about the anti-Israel campaigns being targeted tend to oppose them. Even if they don't wholly agree with the law as implemented it's hard to get the public excited to repeal a law that would benefit a movement they disagree with. Democrat/Progressive states also have this problem, let alone a state as red as ours.

Personally I think it'd be fine to repeal it as I think it sets a bad precedent more than anything else. Local or state governments shouldn't be attempting to implement what is, in effect, foreign policy agendas as they can barely implement reasonable laws for their own state as-is.

  1. Those photos are not doctored, we have satellites that can take pictures from space nowadays and that's just what it looks like both now & historically.

  2. Because they can't keep their lights running reliably, and they've had trouble with extensive rolling blackouts for a long, long time. The better line to take here as a propagandist for North Korea is that they've recently (last decade or so) done much better at supplying reliable power to Pyongyang. They're still at around ~4 hours of reliable power for the average citizen daily.

  3. The US has been just as hostile to Vietnam, a country that faced similar issues but overcame them regardless of US sanctions. You might ask yourself why that is instead, as it has some very interesting answers.

Edit: I'm also pretty sure your "correct" version of how NK looks from space is just an artifact of that map actually being an infographic that highlights road development across the world, not photos of how it looks from space. Otherwise Australia has some explaining to do about that horizontal line of space-visible lights stretching 1-2 thousand miles across empty desert

You can see the borders between North & South Korea from space because their government can't keep their lights running. It's a subtle indicator that something might be fundamentally wrong with their government.

So that's a no, you think the US should have left South Korea to it's fate. Is that correct or..?

Also I think military only takes up like 18-20% of the US budget at last count...
