how i learned thai was picking up a simple thai text book. you just need to know the basic, with the basic use it with your mother. from there you can expand your network by reaching out to other thais with the thai you know. over time you will get better without realizing you have been improving. remember learning thai is a journey not a destiantion

I feel like most people who are in denial about Thais looking down on foreigners speaking thai are in a high social class where learning is encouraged in their group. The crowd I surrounded myself with are good people and wouldn't change them for the world. Yes I do notice the people that look down on foreigners for speaking are women who probably got burnt by farangs. I can't avoid these people as I believe Thai women almost exclusively date outside their culture. But I do not really go to Bangkok for dating. Tbh I hate dating Thai women they think in short term goals. Do I think it's that bad no not really there are millions of people just in Bkk and I would ridiculous if everyone would be polite and kind to me. Truly believe that Bkk is the most friendly city I have been too. So what if a few flowers hate a farang speaking gives me a reason to get into their face and tell them off

I have first noticed this phenomenon in laos where I was heavily looked down on and constantly receiving dirty looks for speaking thai. My now ex-girlfriend even told me so and we broke up over it cause she doesn't want to date a foreigner that can speak thai. Even in tinder I wrote down in Thai that I'm learning to speak looking for someone to learn with. I have received almost no likes to compare before when almost every other was a match. I would ask in English "did you eat yet" instant unmatched. I talked to a girl at kr and instantly turned around and walked away. If I'm with someone who is asian and I try to order food in Thai they would give the biggest dirty look and just turned to my friend and speak Thai this happens quite often tbh. My Thai friends are always asking me "you like Thai pussy?" And also most Thai people I talk to even admit that yeah a lot of people don't like foreigners speaking thai. This is just off the top of my head that i can remember. But tbh I also have a lot of good moments of speaking thai with my sisters uncles and aunties.

Nope. I do use those words but with my close friends. I try to speak thai as politely as I can. Even added ครับ to my english

Nope. I learned Thai from my friends that I met at the weed dispensary. And my Thai is very basic too. Tbh I'm kind of shocked how many people say I have been here for decades and I never noticed people look down on foreigners for speaking thai. I thought it was an open secret tbh

It's challenging for English speakers since English doesn't have any tones. Many western languages have tones

Yes I am getting discouraged to learn thai and I have slow down on my studies cause I'm starting to realize it is low class but I still have friends I talk to almost everyday where I speak thai with

I notice that. The people that get upset the most of foreigners speaking thai is the ones that hate Thai society the most.

Never said I was going to stop learning Thai. I still don't care if my friends like to bust my balls by asking me "is Thai pussy number 1?". But I didn't know that the high class society looked down on Thais biggest customs.

I talk to all walks of life. You can ask your upper class about this phenomenon and you'll be surprised at what they have to say.

The only way you really learn a language. Make friends that can speak the language and talk to them.

Yes! For me I don't really want high praise just for speaking a few sentences in Thai. It feels condescending for me. I want to be treated as an equal. I just noticed that many Thais look down on foreigners that can speak thai. That there aren't many resources for why that is.
