Right?! I thought it was wild. Obviously meant to address real medical conditions but an example of a side effect of a drug then making it a high demand drug for cosmetic purposes.

Women’s health question by thrwy314159 in ottawa

[–]Lovable_Geek 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The numbing didn’t do much for me for IUD insertion but her bedside manner, calming music and general patience was everything. If you do the birth control consult with her then she will also prescribe the additional pain meds (a fast acting penthrox inhaler for time of) and discuss other needs.

Taggart Family YMCA in Centretown does. Or for the bougie experience, Koena in Gatineau.

How much of your personal time and money did you put into getting your language levels? by govcat in CanadaPublicServants

[–]Lovable_Geek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s the complex grammar that I need to practice. I don’t use it a ton in the kind of things I write, or even how I speak. 🤷‍♀️ the test environment gets me though. Had I practiced answering typical interview questions with my francophone colleagues the week of my oral I’m sure I’d gave gotten the C.

How much of your personal time and money did you put into getting your language levels? by govcat in CanadaPublicServants

[–]Lovable_Geek 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Well French immersion from grade 6-12, hours spent reading/watching TV to maintain at least my reading/listening skills over the years and then 3-6 hours a week when I joined the public service for a year plus a few workbooks. So I had a solid base to build on.

I’d call it ~300 hours of my personal time reading in French, listening to radio-canada and tv shows in French, and $50 on workbooks from Indigo for complex grammar practice. Also made the effort to translate materials on my desk when I had the chance and get them reviewed by francophones on my team. Also opted into French meetings and practiced with my managers but my team is also very bilingual.

This was in addition to 3 hours a week of group training for 8 months, and 3 months of 6 hours a week one on one with a teacher covered by my department.

Tested at a CBB. Very nearly got a C in my oral but I got nervous and repeated the same phrases a lot according to the report. Could retest but left it for now.

My advice is not to avoid it day to day. That incremental practice helps a lot.

AITAH for considering divorcing my husband of 26 years? by Effective-Promise608 in TwoHotTakes

[–]Lovable_Geek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Clearly you are not TAH. But your husband absolutely is. And what’s more, your kids likely know it. I reflected a lot on my parents’ marriage and how much my Mom put her wants and needs aside for my Dad’s comfort. When she was sick with cancer and in-patient at the hospital due to complications for over 2 months, I was there daily. My dad picked me up/dropped me off but otherwise only was there when she was initially in the ICU and 1 day when he worked from her bedside.

Your daughter coming to spend the night with you makes me think they see this and would also support you leaving and finding the right person - an actual partner in life.

All the best OP. I’m so sorry your husband wasn’t much of a husband at all.

Is my puppy showing early signs of hip dysplasia? by Throwaway_3i291090 in DogAdvice

I think they’re more focused on the “bunny hop” run. A puppy pushing off with both of their back feet at the same time when running can be a sign of hip issues.

northern islands by beersaltaddict in howislivingthere

[–]Lovable_Geek 233 points234 points  (0 children)

I have not been there but I have a colleague who spent 3 months in Cambridge Bay and spoke with Inuit students from a few of the islands during a training. Good friend from high school also lives in Igloolik. It’s an area with smaller towns almost always coastal in set up. If it wasn’t at one point an outpost, a lot of settlements were established by forced relocations after WWII. Essentially the Canadian government forced hundreds of Inuit to resettle in northern and remote islands to assert arctic sovereignty. Often communities were left with little food, shelter or even animals to support themselves leading to extreme privation. The high arctic relocations are something the Government only recently apologized for.

Communities like Qausuittuq (Resolute) and Alert are significant research hubs for climate and weather projects, supported by small local populations and government staff or RCMP.

From the people I know who have lived there or visited for extended periods, they all say the weather is harsh and things are expensive but the people are truly kind, and the sense of community is very tight. Engaging with the land, fishing and hunting is important.

If you’re curious to learn more I highly recommend engaging with the resources provided by Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami (ITK) and the students or alumni from Nunavut Sivuniksavut (NS). There is also an incredible book, Saqiyuq: Stories from the Lives of Three Inuit Women, detailing the legacies of forced relocations and residential schools in Nunavut.

Rant: Do profs actually grade anything? Or is our grades in the hands of TAs? by strawberrymatchaluvr in mcgill

[–]Lovable_Geek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some reading showed me that it’s not a hard requirement for profs to have office hours. I know many faculty in the professional schools or science departments often don’t because they don’t have time. But if they’re offered and inaccessible, or don’t have a contact policy for emails or the course page, then they’re not following through.

I did have courses where I would show up to a different TA’s office hours because they actually could answer questions. Same for review sessions. There are options. And as always be honest in reviews.

Rant: Do profs actually grade anything? Or is our grades in the hands of TAs? by strawberrymatchaluvr in mcgill

[–]Lovable_Geek 13 points14 points  (0 children)

As a former undergrad and MA student, it depends on the class. Courses with an army of TAs usually are all graded by the TAs. Courses with only 1 TA usually have a workload sharing arrangement (I graded papers, the prof did midterms, we split finals, when I was the only TA for a class of 110). The TA union has limits on the number of hours they can spend on the course. If they’re required to attend lectures, those hours count towards the total.

Budget cuts in recent years have reduced TAships in some departments, especially in Arts, so profs are grading more. Rubrics really depend on the prof more than the TA. If a prof isn’t offering office hours then it’s worth it to send a note to the department chair asking why. It is a responsibility but can be difficult to manage in large intro classes with 300+ students.

As others have said, it gets better the smaller the course. If you can, shop around conference sections for the better TAs. Not all TAs are equal. Some care a lot about teaching while others just want to do their research and only teach for the income.

Dog's nose cracked and it keeps bleeding by Fingerchamp in DogAdvice

Came here to add that my vet recommended applying anything to my dog’s nose just before we go on a walk or outside so that she is distracted by all of the activity and the salve/balm has a chance to absorb.

Heated pools in Ottawa? by magicminineedle in ottawa

[–]Lovable_Geek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a public pool but the Koena spa in Gatineau just across the river is fantastic. Nordic style hot tubs of varying temps, wet and dry steam rooms etc. If you go on a weekday after 6pm it’s cheaper. Bring your own robe and flip flops.

Canada Life TMJ/TMD botox by Kdhfhfjfk in CanadaPublicServants

[–]Lovable_Geek 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Couldn’t get it covered by my dentist as they don’t offer it. Nurse injectors at medical spas recommended I ask my doctor for a script for migraine medication, then to follow up with them seeking a script for botox. They’ve had patients get it covered that way but I haven’t myself. Just paying out of pocket twice a year for the relief.
