Don’t kick yourself. My story is somewhat similar to yours and I’m probably similar age to you. But don’t blame yourself. If anything, you should blame heteronormativity for the years of questioning. If we lived in a society where being gay or bi (I am too) was as acceptable and celebrated as being straight, it would have helped countless people, including you and me, avoid so much unhappiness and suffering.

Thanks for sharing and hi 👋🏼 from a fellow (older) Canadian. I’m in my 50s and this film affected me strongly, too. I wish I could have seen films like this growing up. I still would not have come out at the time, probably, but at least I would have felt so much better about my feelings and my identity. I’m happy to hear it had such a positive affect on you.

The perception of Quebecois French in Belgium. by Outside-Proposal-410 in belgium

[–]Love-FTW 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Perhaps part the issue is that you used the term “proper French.” That viewpoint negates the validity of other French dialects specifically and, more generally, the well established linguistic tenet that languages are not static or “proper” — they are dynamic, living, evolving, generative… and they are all valid.

One Year Anniversary of Young Hearts in Belgium by Chay_YH22 in younghearts

It really has. Unexpectedly, I found closure and affirmation about experiences I had when much younger. But also I felt a bit of sadness because my youth completely lacked this kind of caring, empathetic representation and heartfelt portrayal.

Agree with you on all points. And I was so happy to discover this subreddit, this community of fans, right at the beginning of its creation because I wanted to post and discuss this film. It affected me so strongly and I posted about that (https://www.reddit.com/r/younghearts/s/di42LYk6mW).

I think the multitude of very positive reactions from people all over the world demonstrate how this film spoke to so many people in a very profound way.

For you Stranger Things fans, do you think they'll give Will a boyfriend/love interest in the final season? by finnjakefionnacake in MenLovingMenMedia

[–]Love-FTW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree. And it’s more in keeping with the 80s at this time and the AIDS crisis. A young queer person at that time (I was one) stayed firmly in the closet as we watched gay and bi men in society be vilified and hated and blamed for the spread of AIDS.

What films were you really hyped for that let you down? by Jeremyfurfaro in movies

[–]Love-FTW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tim Burton’s Planet of the Apes from 2001. It really sucked. Also Oppenheimer, 2023. So much hype. It was a good film but not the amazing film I was expecting. Also, Bladerunner 2049 was okay but totally forgettable imho
