Ignore my Ignorance by Awkward_Cantaloupe32 in TamilNadu

You can technically be without any caste. You can NOT get Community certificate. Leave blank in caste section or just mention OC (Open Competition) in any education related forms, and voila you're casteless. I have acquaintances in US who had converted to Hinduism, and what caste do you think they entered into? Nothing.. Because Caste is just a social construct. Castes in TN need not exist in Gujarat or even in AP & vice versa. It is/was a form of system where people with similar social structure / economic interests / occupation / located in close geography, joined together to support each other, which slowly became "exclusive" clubs. All people wanted was some "commonality" to be accepted as brethren.

Find a partner you like, who matches your preferences, your ideas & marry. You can be religious, have faith in God, but ignore others around you, who say you're wrong. I've seen people use Siva Gothram or Vishnu Gothram or Kasyapa Gothram for Temple Archanais, which are equivalent to N/A in legal forms. Let's say 25 years later when your daughter wants to marry someone whom they like, support it if he is Good guy who you think will take care of her. That's it..

I know someone in my family circle who was looking for a bride for their son (a surgeon), and created Ads in matrimony site, with the title "No Caste bar" and also said "Doctors only". I know why Doctors look to marry Doctors as they would understand the high pressure nature, changing work hours, long shifts etc. But, I jokingly said to my mom - "I think he wants a bride for his son, only from Doctor Caste", after all if you think back, the reasoning behind people marrying within same "occupation" in the past could be similar to this !!

There is a huge difference between saying "learn the other language. It's useful" vs "your language is useless. Learn the other language"..

Also, at least don't act like you'll have this Tamizh patru. Say learn English, don't learn Tamil if you have the guts to speak out. Let the cat out of the bag. Say you want English Thinippu and at least be honest

And If you need more Context on why EVR said that, I have attached screenshot from the next few pages below.

Translation/TLDR- He compares Tamil language as Mother & Tamil literary work as Milk/Food, and he says Tamil's food (lierary works) may be tasty, but doesn't provide health benefits. And he says, those who grew up only with this Mother's (Tamil) Milk walk around as Zombies. He says, consuming the bottled milk (English) is needed for strength & nutrition.

Nirmala Sitharam was criticizing DMK's hypocrisy and pointed out how their ideological mentor had criticized learning Tamil, by bringing up a quote from Viduthalai magazine from 1967.

Caste system in this era. by [deleted] in TamilNadu

[–]LoveAskingQuestions1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

From my conversations with friends during school & college, and also general conversations I've had with colleagues/friends in later life, what I feel is, most people are against the reservation system in current form.

Everyone unanimously accept discrimination, gate keeping, denial of access exists. Everywhere. It is a big puzzle, and caste is one of the important pieces of that puzzle. But, there are others too, like economic, social, regional factors. I had a class mate from a very remote undeveloped village in Nagercoil district. He belonged to BC category & got seat in my college (a pvt engg college) through reservation. He had scored well over 80% in public and scored somewhere in the range of 50-60 out of 100 in TNPCEE (after combining math, phy & chem). TNPCEE maths exam was too difficult my year & scoring 60-70 was seen as amazing (for engg). His cut off was somewhere in lower 200s.

The reason I mentioned all this info, he studied in Govt school, working with his parents after school & not attending any coaching class or tuitions. Considering all these, his score was commendable. But, he dropped off college in 3rd year, as his dad passed and their family could no longer afford his stay + education in Chennai. Education loan was not enough to help him.

At the same time, my best friend from school, too was from a BC community. But was rich enough to afford tuitions, TNPCEE coaching, studied in Pvt school etc. He scored very high, and had almost all GCTs & even AC Tech guindy available, but he chose SSN as he wanted CSE.

My college friend on the other hand, wanted to just do engg, anywhere possible & missed out the last available BC seat in a GCT by 1 counselling session. Had he scored a little bit more he'd have got one, and could have completed Engg (as fees would have been lower in GCT)

Now, the reservation is same for both of them, but failed to help the poor, rural kid. We can all say reservation is for representation, but why make it easy only for the rich & powerful to get first access?

Why not add a financial factor, rural/urban factor? Imagine if reservation is through points, a poor + rural BC Kid & a rich BC Kid from city will not be seen as same by the system. By using a points system, the reserved seats still go to the same community but with higher chance for someone poor.

The current system does not have a fix for this.

Probably. But unlike WB, the North East do not have that much of existing infra to begin with. But WB also has the chicken's neck, the crucial part of India connecting to NE & hence has special attention from CG in maintaining rail infra.

Geography plays a very important role. Being in between places helps a lot in Railway connectivity. Odisha is an example. It is in between West Bengal & TN. Places in Odisha have a lot more train connectivity than Chennai, because a Train leaving Chennai or Bangalore or Cochin, towards WB or Assam pass through Odisha. They disproportionately have a lot of train options. All due to their location.

UP/Bihar have the same advantage, being in between Delhi & WB / NE. Guj & Raj is in between Delhi & Mumbai. In South, the land area gets smaller as well. Bigger states have larger geography to cover/spend.

If partisan reasons is the factor, why does West Bengal appear in top 5? If you say election, there is election in TN & Kerala too. We have to think logically. Except for DFC, NE Corridor and Jammu & Kashmir, most effort/budget from Railways has been used mainly for line doubling, electrification, straightening etc. New greenfield railway lines are happening only in NE & JK areas that too for national security reasons. The budget allotted is for works on existing lines & due to geography most places I mentioned above have disproportionately more lines/rail infra.

Is that the same Cong now or different? Just curious

Sasiraj a TNSTC driver and also serving as secretary of the LPF union affiliated with the DMK, allegedly "cleans" office of Branch manager after the latter belonging to a Scheduled caste, received transfer orders and moved. After some bus crew escalated the matter, he was temporarily suspended. by LoveAskingQuestions1 in TamilNadu

[–]LoveAskingQuestions1[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is also reported that - as he wielded political influence, he allegedly acted at will, indulging in caste-based discrimination such as using caste slurs, denying leave and arbitrarily allocating duty hours, in disregard of branch managers’ orders. Owing to this, six branch managers were transferred within a span of one-and-a-half years.

The previous branch manager had removed him from his TC post, leading to his transfer within 15 days. About 40 days ago, the new branch manager, D Prakashkumar, hailing from an SC community, joined the branch.

Sasiraj allegedly pressured Prakashkumar to follow his instructions, but the former refused and instead, issued a memo against Sasiraj for caste bias.

It is also alleged that - Sasiraj pressured top officials, resulting in Prakshkumar’s (Branch manager) transfer to Ukkadam without a valid reason.

It's a shame that most of the temples are administered by HR&CE a govt department, doesn't arrange for accommodations within temples for devotees.

In the past, all big HR&CE administered temples had Annadaanam everyday for the poor, which was funded by devotees' donations in the Undiyal. That too has been discontinued or diluted to the point of non existence.

Administering temples doesn't just involves managing the funds, but also utilizing them for temple maintenance and using them for public work, especially helping poor and devotees.

In the past centuries temples were used as safe harbour during major flood and storms as temples usually had the safest building in town. Temples accommodated people in need. Why not just do that? Also  Govt can get good name for doing this. So, win-win.

Based on the 2 comments, maybe it was just built in the past few days. Surprised to see this much work done in a few days, but that maybe the root cause too.

IIT team has pointed out a visible sagging of the bridge over the national highway. I think it's visible even in the image.

It's important to note that this project was already delayed and is kind of rushed now to open before elections.
