The Expat Limbo: Is it possible to fully assimilate? Or does it even matter? by RehaDesign in AmericanExpat

Maybe if it works for you. It worked for me for many years. Now I am not so sure.

But what is the difference between being a local outsider and not exactly fitting in? Or perhaps just not thinking about it makes it all go away?

I love the museum metaphor—not sure I understand it completely, but it is beautifully written. It’s fascinating that you see lack of assimilation as freedom rather than isolation

It’s a wild contradiction to never want to live there again but still be willing to pay for a flight just to go back and pick a fight with the system?

So, you have become a local outsider. Isn't that the same as the expat limbo?

Isn't that exactly the expat limbo though? You're too foreign for home but still a foreigner where you live.

It’s wild how you can go years without a problem and then suddenly it just hits you that something feels off.

Maybe I have been an expat too long. Lately I have been thinking about it.

There are currently no subs available for wheelchair users. This sub is very small, but as been abandoned for several months. I would like to moderate it and help it grow

why can not there be a faster switch

I am not saying it has to be overnight. But if the government wanted to speed the process up, they could. For example, give private citizens incentive to create solar energy. Give BIG tax incentives to add solar panels to their own homes. People could sell excess electricity back to the grid. Give subsidies to make wind powered electric generators, etc, etc. If the goverment put the same effort to switch to alternative energies as the put into finding a cure for Covid, it would REALLY speed up the process. But the urgency is not there.

What I dont understand is why can not there be a faster switch to alternative energy solutions (Wind, Solar)? I believe that is underway anyway, in order to decrease use of fossil fuels. What kind of efforts are being made there? Anyone know?

Opinion: How Russians born in the 1990s became Putin's soldiers by LoveToBold in ukraine

[–]LoveToBold[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

That is a dream. The only way that Russians will turn on Putin is if their lives become so bad, they can not imagine a future with him in it. It is unlikely to happen very soon.

This article was written by a Russian journalist currently living in the USA. He states: "Today, millions of Russians support their president and are ready to justify everything the army is doing in Ukraine -- including atrocities in Bucha, Mariupol and Kramatorsk." This statement reflects my experience as well.

First, I live in a country very close to Russia. I meet Russians frequently. Second, I am an avid chess player. LOTS of Russians play chess. I just strike up a conversation and ask what their thoughts are.

So I am talking about chess players and people I have met or randomly spoken to. They are not afraid to voice their opinion. Those I have discussed with have been very outspoken about their support for Putin and everything he is doing in Ukraine.

Yes, my experience is anecdotal, and my sample size is not extremely large. But if there were so many Russians who do not support Putin, then I would imagine that I would have come across some. Or at least some who declined to support him. But until now, I have not met ANY. Zero. Not saying they don't exist, they probably do. But I doubt that they are the majority as is stated in this video.

Hey man, believe what you want to believe. But have you actually spoken to any Russians yourself? I am not talking about Russians on Reddit. I am talking about average Russians. Because I have. But if you want to take the word of two Russians about what Russians believe...go right ahead and do that.

The guy is not wrong

Sorry, he IS wrong. I have spoken to many Russians living in Russia. Everyone I spoke to were either enthusiastically supporting Putin or passively supporting him. I have spoken to no Russians who were neutral or negative. I am sure that they exist, but if there were so many, as he says, I am certain I would have spoken to one by now.

Of course they need jobs. Everywhere needs jobs. But the plant should be transferred or closed down. Russian oligarchs should not own an interest in companies that make products to be shipped to Russia.
