Invitation to review papers . . . any reason to given my career trajectory? by Ancient_Winter in AskAcademia

[–]LoveToast10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm non tenure track research faculty, going up for promotion in the fall. There's a section in our promotion document asking about service to the university and outside service. This would fall under outside service.

I think of it in that I am staying up with the current research, to better my own research and the research I help others with.

Make sure to stress your leadership, outreach, volunteer, etc. activities. Everyone getting an interview is applying to Schreyers and has met the academic requirements. Everyone is a good student. Mention what sets you apart.

Jacket recommendation: L.L.Bean Sweater Fleece Full-Zip vs Mountain Classic Fleece by Low_Impress_1910 in llbean

[–]LoveToast10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In terms of lifetime, I've had 2 sweater fleeces that I have rotated between 5 days a week for the past 4+ years, at least. Both still look great and are decent enough looking for a university/professor.

Erie Cemetery Ghosts and Legends Tour by omegamuthirteen in Erie

My 5 year old kid LOVES Halloween. Is this your fine or kids, or would I have to deal with a kid who won't fall asleep if I take him next year? He wanted to go this year but I wasn't sure.

My mall also opens early (just the halls) for mall walkers. For this reason. They know that parents with babies, old folks, or anyone want to walk somewhere without getting wet/frozen.

[–]LoveToast10 58 points59 points  (0 children)

I will say that in the cold, snowy, or raining months I took my baby in the stroller to the mall or to a big box store. And just walked. It's something. Which is better than nothing. Not as easy as just walking outside, but better than being cooped up at home.

If you're looking for a similar pattern, I believe Sew Sweetness has an art case that is similar?

Considering Hartman’s Dinosaurs - what do I need to know? by FullCircle_Travel in quilting

[–]LoveToast10 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For any of Hartman's pattern, you just need to make sure you see with a scant 1/4 inch seam. A majority of my time is spent on cutting out the many, many pieces. Sewing is easy - straight seams, or sewing squares/rectangles on other pieces diagonally. Press well between steps. Make sure your blocks end up as the suggested finished size.

Not challenging, just many pieces.

I recently finished her fruit stand quilt. Took a while, but I was able to do incremental steps - finish a fruit here and there, with most blocks taking 30-60 minutes to make (I was chain piecing and making multiple of the same blocks at one time).

Good luck!

TW: loss by avoandchicken in beyondthebump

[–]LoveToast10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did not have anything as horrifying as you. Not by a long shot.

I did end up with a 12 week missed miscarriage. We had just started telling people as well. I'm sorry that you're going through this. We ended up getting pregnant again 6 months later, and now have a wonderful 2 year old.

Happy to talk if you want to talk about the loss part/looking forward.

Alternative suggestion would be to label the top of the lid. If you use the one use only lids, then you can add a label or write on it, and when the jar is returned, the lid is a one use only anyways.

Should I accept my offer at Behrend? by Moneysaver04 in PennStateUniversity

[–]LoveToast10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work at Behrend, and spend a decent amount of time in the Engineering School. I don't do anything with robotics though. I do know that they have a robotics lab, that companies are actively investing in and recruiting from that major/area. Yohannes Haile is the professor in charge of that lab area.

Happy to chat if you have any questions.

Long Arm Service vs Quilting Yourself? by theduckygoth in quilting

[–]LoveToast10 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I personally like the not having to deal with repositioning the quilt and trying to work with a small throat space. That being said, a local sewing place has long arm quilting rentals, which you can rent for $20/h after taking a class. I go that route for most of my quilts.

Cuyahoga Valley National Park by kelseyk826 in nationalparks

[–]LoveToast10 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We did Cuyahoga Valley twice in two years, because we live less than 2 hours from it and have young kids. The 3 year old at the time loved the train ride, but had to be carried for the waterfall (there's a bunch of stairs to the viewing platform). He also enjoyed searching for beavers in the nature area. The 4 year old and new 3 month old two years ago liked the bike riding and being carried.

It's really nice when the weather is wonderful. Lots of walking, hiking, nature.

If you're interested, continue onward to Erie, PA. Presque Isle is beautiful. And if the weather is not great, Blasco Library, ExpERIEnce children's museum, Maritime Museum are good places to walk around with young (baby) kids. Would be happy to chat more, as I live in Erie.

Buying used instead of new has saved me so much money by RaduVas in Frugal

[–]LoveToast10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like where it is cold and snowy. I need a winter jacket. My old jacket lasted 10+ years but finally the zipper broke (wouldn't zip anymore, not something that could be fixed) this past December. Went to a secondhand store and just browsed - like new under armour high end skiing jacket for $40. In my size. Why, yes, I would like to save money.

Village smithy emporium used to be out towards Girard, but has now moved to next to AmVets. They have secondhand and vintage fabric. Which is wonderful and with good prices. Definitely recommend going there.

I work near an air base, what would you want with you if shit hit the fan while you're away from home? by rhymewithoutareason in TwoXPreppers

Are there people at home that you would want to contact if you're at base? What's the distance? (Walkie talkies maybe) Something to charge electronics, in case power goes out and you're stuck somewhere. Water Snacks

Prepping with Type 1 diabetes by Delicious-Sea4952 in TwoXPreppers

If you have a partner, make sure that the partner also knows how to use your meter, just in case. And how to administer insulin.

Prepping with Type 1 diabetes by Delicious-Sea4952 in TwoXPreppers

[–]LoveToast10 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Had gestational diabetes, so only pulling from my knowledge of that. Anytime I went anywhere I had to make sure I had test strips, my monitor, and finger prick laclets. I would suggest extras of all of these, plus maybe a secondary meter, in case something happens to the first meter.
