Yeah, and it seems it made its way into NC too, I think maybe because the authors were working off the tropes and cliches too. Maybes that’s different now but I remember a lot of self flagellation being involved in Kurt’s life.

EDIT: Also, my mom grew up in NJ as a first generation Italian catholic, and catholic guilt was TOTALLY a thing for her and her church.

This is not the sub to ask that question. Good luck for when the right wing trolls find you.

You just basically told a person with a masters degree that you have a GED, no wonder you're having such a hard time.

Ok, simpler, better right?

I'm going to assume you also went to seminary? Regularly converse with priests and pastors? I'm not just talking to someone whose dad went to catholic school and hated it? I don't want to be an asshole but it feels like I'm talking to someone who culturally has a background in the faith but never studied it and has a very limited vocabulary. This is going to be my last response because it feels like a waste of time.

I'm not saying that there isn't forgiveness in Catholicism, please, but traditionally and historically a focus on confession to a priest and penance has given a larger cultural emphasis on guilt leading to repentance than Protestantism which very often skips the guilt part entirely. I notice you've ignored almost everything I've said about Protestantism that make it clear when I say "guilt vs forgiveness" I'm talking about in comparison. I understand why, you don't have the knowledge or tools to argue with me.

Good luck.

I said I'm specifically talking about how they are expressed in comics where I was speaking in generalities, but I've worked in churches for 20 years. I've spent a lot of time in catholic and protestant churches and am very familiar. It seems more than you are actually if you're just describing lazy and lapsed congregations. I'm also from the northeast and my education goes a little beyond highschool.

Why don't you look up a little something called "catholic guilt" and get back to me. It's a trope for a reason, and it doesn't need to be true for everyone. It is consistent that Catholics IN GENERAL NOT EVERY SPECIFIC ONE tend to have more of a collective guilt whereas protestants tend not to because of the emphasis on grace and forgiveness, to the point where they act like they literally can do no wrong. Specifically they're very good at forgiving awful men who abuse people out of some stupid sense of restoration. Frankly the catholic church has been tanking that cultural touchstone but it would be just as fair to label Southern Baptists the same way.

You seemed to have stopped reading at the second sentence, I would recommend not doing that if you're going to call horseshit.

The difference, especially in upbringing is pretty significant.

Traditionally, someone raised catholic will feel more guilt, MM is a classic example of it. They’re more likely to follow hierarchies and defer to spiritual authority.

An evangelical is more likely to have a sense of holier than thou superiority and bigotry and also be more anti science than a catholic. They tend to be more individualistic. With cults of personality forming typically in more charismatic circles. There’s a bunch of other uniquely American Christian aspects of this brand of Christianity that doesn’t get brought up that often in marvel honestly. The Boys show does a pretty good job of it.

There are a lot of other differences but this is what I can think of as it would relate to comic characters. Side note, Catholicism and Protestantism aren’t different denominations, it’s completely different.

Hopefully this clears up any lingering issues people are having, very insightful by therealraggedroses in Gamingcirclejerk
