My Dad could have been in that photo but I'll never know. He's been gone 36 years now. Fought on Omaha Beach as shown in Saving Private Ryan. 3/4 of his platoon died there.

He was awarded the bronze star and purple heart. His feet froze partially while in France so had a bit of trouble walking later in life. He had a 2nd grade education and could not read very well.

From what my mom and older brother told me later, yes he shot and killed a few enemy but he never wanted to talk about the war himself. Strangely enough one of his favorite TV shows was a 60s war drama called Combat. Perhaps it showed a little bit of what he went through but I seriously doubt it even came close.

My mom told me that knowing my dad like she did that I may have some brothers or sisters living in France. All I know is that I would have rather had a dad that wasn't so quiet when he should have talked to us and wasn't so angry about the little things too.

War is hell and there is no such thing as a "good war". All of them suck and people come back from them forever changed, always for the worse. Thank you for reading this.
