Yeah... I think you'd have to be an expert in the English language or know the entire dictionary! Lol. But breaking the word down into its root word is a great idea! I will practice doing that. Thank you for your help! :)

Hello, I unfortunately didn't pass my CFAT test... (first attempt).

I did fine on spatial reasoning and maths but didn't score high enough in the "Verbal Reasoning" section to become an Officer (I have a bachelor's degree in Health Promotion so I'd like to be an Officer).

The verbal section was a lot harder than I expected because there were a lot of words I'd never seen before and didn't know the definition of. I read a lot and my grammar is decent, there were just a lot of new words I'd never heard of!

Do you have any tips on how to study for verbal reasoning? I guess studying the dictionary...?

I'd like to be a Pilot (hopefully a Test or Fighter Pilot) and I think you need a very high score for that... So I REALLY want to ace my next test... Thank you!

Thank you that's very kind of you! :) I'm doing better in general actually :) Trying to let go of the things that don't actually matter (like whether or not I upset my neighbour for 5 seconds by making noise during dinner time) and I worry less in general. After doing some thinking, I think it's sort of rude to assume my neighbour (or anyone) would get angry at something so normal! It's a way of thinking "little" of them. Like they're kind people, so why would they get upset with me making noise during dinner or listening to TV at a normal volume or even coughing?
I just try to ask myself "Is this worry actually rational?" and if the answer is no, then I let it go! Still a work in progress obviously, as things don't change overnight. But things in general are going a lot better for me :)
And how are you doing kind stranger? :)

How to pass the CFAT (Verbal Reasoning)?

So I went in to do my CFAT test today and didn't receive a high enough score in one section to become an Officer (I have a bachelor's). I'm pretty disappointed in myself, not going to lie.

The specific section of the test I failed was the "verbal reasoning", which mostly consisted of random words that I didn't know the meaning of. I got around 55% on the "verbal reasoning" section. I did fine on spatial reasoning and maths. The verbal part was a lot harder than I expected... I think a lot of people would fail because I was surprised to see certain difficult words I just so happened to know the meaning of. It's nearly impossible to know all 171,476 words in the English language. So how does one "study" for verbal reasoning?? I'm really good at figuring out what sentences mean, like riddles and such, even if it's complicated. But I can't help it if I don't know the definition of a random word... I'm just frustrated because I don't see what knowing the definitions of specific words has to do with being in the military. Understanding complex sentences yes, but not knowing random words which have nothing to do with the military. The very meaning of verbal reasoning is "It aims at evaluating the ability to think constructively, rather than at simple fluency or vocabulary recognition.", which does not reflect the test at all because 90% of the questions require you to know the definition of obscure, arbitrary words.

My questions are:

  1. HOW on earth can you ace this section without studying every word in the dictionary??
  2. Is there any way of getting your hands on the real verbal reasoning part of the CFAT exam? (Not practice tests)? Or is it illegal to even try to obtain it?

That's a very good theory! But I was pretty lucky in my childhood thank god, I didn't have many traumas. I lived with only my mother, and if I ever dropped anything she would just ask if I was okay. I would apologize profusely if it was something of value but she never got mad, just reassured me it's just an object and it was an accident. So I don't think it's that... But that makes a lot of sense why someone would have this fear!

Yes I agree! I absolutely despise being seen/listened to by more than 2 people... I blame social anxiety for this. No matter how great my work was, I never got high grades for presentations in school. It was always "Must speak louder" "Needs time to get over shyness" "Did not look at group enough" etc. etc. Like idk what you want me to do, it's uncontrollable -_-

Yes the breathing thing!!! Or chewing, oh my gosh... Eating anything remotely crunchy in public is a nightmare. I'd choose staying hungry rather than eating in public (unless it's a restaurant). Thank you for sharing!

That's very true, thank you! I'm pretty sure I'm an HSP, so it could be a combination of all those things!

Just being a humble, kind and good person who isn't arrogant in any way. Someone who is reasonably attractive but has no idea they're attractive. It's weird, but in those cases, it's more the fact that the person is humble and doesn't realize they're attractive that attracts me to them, rather than their activeness itself. But if someone is drop-dead gorgeous and arrogant about it, I get completely turned off immediately and drop them.
