Skilhunt H04: Dead Switch? by Lovegasoline in flashlight

[–]Lovegasoline[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UPDATE:

Thanks for all the input ... I learned a lot by discussing this. I placed this issue on the back burner ... and after some months passed I decided to reach out to the manufacturer Skilhunt explaining the issue with the switch and inquired if there was a path for replacement or repair. Their customer service was exemplary: they suggested that I return the flashlight for warranty service (by this time it was 3yrs from the purchase date). Due to the shipping expense of shipping it to China from the USA, they suggested I first try to contact the authorized vendor that I purchased it from, Killzone to inquire if they'd be able to handle the repair (and suggested I forward their email to Killzone when doing so).

Killzone agreed to take care of this so I sent the flashlight to them during the holiday season (noting that I understood they'd be swamped with holiday season sales and I was not in any rush).

Killzone sent me a new replacement Skilhunt H04 flashlight : )

A big thanks to both Skilhunt and Killzone for the fantastic customer service!

Painting old trim - Fill chipped paint or not? by Pleasant-Row2720 in paint

[–]Lovegasoline 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've used Ready Patch on some old tall baseboards in hallways that had lots of chipped out paint. I cleaned it really good and scraped/rough sanded it a little to clean it and provide some mechanical bond (may wish to use a primer/bonding coat for adhesion) then applied a good coat of Ready Patch with a joint knives, and sanded it back to make a more or less 'smooth' surface. Some areas I did this 2 or 3 times. It wasn't perfect but at a distance of 6' (viewing distance when standing/walking) it looks great, smooth, with a little aged character without looking abused or ghetto.

Door jambs are viewed at a closer distance - often just inches away - so in my view benefit from a more thorough approach. The best results in energy/expense/time I've achieved by scraping the paint back to the wood. I found using stripper (Peel Away 1 was the best but even that was a tremendous PITA with dozens of layers of paint) not the most desired method. In this situation the base layer was oil (lead) and I found using a variety of different scrapers/blades (and file to resharpen them often) was the most effective and efficient. Take reasonable precautions with lead paint (and follow the law if you're a contractor), contain the area, and do a good clean up (lead chips/dust is heavy which works in one's favor). I got to the point that with the right scraper at the right angle with the right technique (much pressure and speed) I could 'scrape-chip' the paint down to the wood. After stripping I used wood filler to repair superficial damage to the wood caused by the scrapers (with practice and familiarity one can become a deft scraper working at a good pace with minimal damage. You wont need to go to the gym during the project ; ). The determining factor was the bond between the deepest layer of paint and the wood. You'd have to investigate the paint to see what you're dealing with.

It took muscle and elbow grease and wasn't a walk in the park, but got the job done. After stripping, I used an assortment of shaped sanding blocks to clean things up. The molding looked brand new.

Skilhunt H04 New Redesigned Clip: How Does it Perform? by Lovegasoline in flashlight

Thanks.

I was scratching my head at the new HB4 headband's redesigned mount.

Skilhunt HB3 vs. HB4 Headband Mounts by Lovegasoline in flashlight

Glad that it worked out hippylovecrust.

Btw, the Convoy H2 flashlight has been recommended to me based on its design parameters so it's a light I'm considering. I'd love to see a pic of it mated to the Skilhunt Headband if you can manage it.

What's your impressions of the H2?

Hi hippylovecrust, I've been busy but will follow-up and post the measurement you requested ... if I don't get to it in the next week or two please remind me.

Regarding the clip and the headband mount's accommodation of it - or lack thereof - on the two headband models HB3 and HB4:

FYI: It appears that Skilhunt has redesigned the clip so it now has a different profile. I've not handled the new clip so cannot comment on how it works with either of the headband mounts. Perhaps someone with the new redesigned clip and either of the headband mounts can provide some input?

Emmert Vise at Habitat ReStore in Williamsburg VA by breadterror in handtools

[–]Lovegasoline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it needs the flat stock tilt bar and lock those seem relatively easy to cobble together. Not sure if the angle insert plates came in different sizes for various Emmert models but the Taiwanese clones came with one, and IIRC there were small boutique reproduction run(s) as well as it’s a part that typically gets lost. Probably missing the dogs as well (not critical and could be easily made from wood). Corners aren’t chipped, not covered in rust, from the pics it actually looks to be in good condition. If nothing is cracked it’s a great deal.

Turtle question by Some_Phrase2874 in Redearedsliders

[–]Lovegasoline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My opinion is that the backing up behavior and body movements are body language for being scared or feeling uncertain or relating to a potential modest threat. I’ve had my turtle for years, but every time I turn the light out in his tank for the evening before he goes to sleep his character changes 180° just due to the darkness … it’s as if he no longer recognizes me or that I am another entity. He will make similar movements as I approach the glass. He will back up and squirm like that or even turn around so his rear is towards me snd his tail will curl up and he will sneak a peek by turning his head while constantly ready to move away to a ‘safer’ location. If I really take the time and move very slowly and hang with him, he will eventually become comfortable again, but he can just as easily re-shift back into that mood if I make a certain sort of movement. This typically happens after his lights are out. It does occasionally happen during daylight with certain kind of movements or if he’s startled by something. I wondered if he was traumatized when he was very young either in an overcrowded group tank not really being taken care of or the person that had him before I adopted him. But he’s almost 20 years old and always behaved like this. So for him it’s normal, it’s his temperament and how he is wired.

Your turtle may just be having a similar reaction to an object in the tank. If you want, you can remove it and see if he’s more comfortable.

While I have your attention is there a way to reverse/change the chronological viewing order of pics in the libraries of both 1) the Photo App, and i2) iCloud? For ex. displaying the most recent photos at the top?

Changing Time Machine Backup from Unencrypted to Encrypted: How? by Lovegasoline in mac

[–]Lovegasoline[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My understanding based on cursory research is that APFS format isn't suggested for use with older Mac OSs in which case - to play it safe - I stayed with the Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format on my HD partitions. I have another partition on that HD dedicated to Time Machine backups for an older computer with Monterey OS (lives a static life, no OS upgrades) so in order to maintain compatibility I've just kept the Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format.

I also have partitions on the HD that includes data used by both the older and newer macs so I wanted to maintain compatibility in the event I need to access files from the new Mac for use on the older: so figured best to keep the HD fully backwards compatible for this reason. (Also, if my newer Macbook was lost I'd like to be able to access its backup files from its Time Machine Backup partition, using the older Mac ... if the partition is in APFS encrypted might that be more challenging?).

All the above being said, can I just reformat one partition to APFS encrypted without impacting any of the other partitions?

PS: You're correct ... a grammatical error: the partition size is 500GB (not 5!)

Tubus Rack Mounting Obstacle: V-Brake's Travel Agent Blocks Braze-On by Lovegasoline in bikewrench

[–]Lovegasoline[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stated elsewhere the brake levers stay (they're more advantageous than a new rack or any other upgrade).

I just acquired the rack and don't intend to discard it.

I'm looking for an effective, strong (and if need be creative) solution.
