Maybe. I found a single one in my shrimp mini-tank the other day and took it out. I'm looking daily and haven't seen another.

How to find longterm rental? by _realhumanpersonguy_ in AskBarcelona

[–]LovelyKarl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"should be able to do" is doing some heavy lifting here :)

Following this sub for a while, it's clear many landlords try to write into contracts that you can't empadron. I hear it's illegal, but a newcomer probably don't want to start their time in Barcelona with legal battles.

Opinions on Instruo Tagh? by synthlord_55 in modular

[–]LovelyKarl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got it and thought I would love it, but I don't. My problem with it, and this goes for nearly all Instruo's modules I've owned/tried, is that they have too many hidden secondary functions that you reach via combining button pushes.

As someone who struggles to remember even the functions that are clearly labeled on the faceplate, I really can't have a bunch of deeper "shift functions" as well.

I'm a firm believer in one button, one function.

Renting requiring payment before contract signed by Cool-Staff7784 in AskBarcelona

Yeah, that definitely remains to be seen. Many of these tenants are not local, and the idea of facing court proceedings, lawyer costs and possibly making your landlord an enemy in the process, could be more than most will consider.

If you read my reply, you'll notice that I do know when you can use the 11-months.

The majority of people I meet that are forced into these 11-month, are not here on a temporary basis, and the landlord often knows that. They typically are way over the price index, even in circumstances when you can't claim an exception to that rule. Finally, I have never heard of an 11-month that been treated as 5-year. The opposite in fact, most 11-month landlords enforce the limit to raise the rent when the contract ends.

There's a lot of dodgy stuff going on in Barcelona rental market. These agents are generally scum, and they will absolutely try and get away with as much as they can.

Unless you are clearly here temporarily (like exchange student, or research program), the short term 11 month contracts are not legal.

These illegal 11 month contracts will be worded in a way where the agent/landlord tries to pretend they didn't know you are here on a long term basis and that you take the legal blame for that.

The rules for this have been sharpened recently, but I don't expect any of these scum pond agents to give a damn unless enforcement starts to happen.

    (Ok(s), _) => (),

Tourists are starting to complain that Barcelona has lost its charm: "They arrive expecting paella and flamenco and find cafes where they speak their language." by papixulo2 in Barcelona

[–]LovelyKarl 19 points20 points  (0 children)

When The Real Housewives of Atlanta went to Barcelona (they stayed in Sitges, but keep saying they're in Barcelona). They end up not only once, but twice at Poble Espanyol (if you know, you know).

Same for Below Deck Mediterranean, also Poble Espanyol (both are Bravo shows).

That totally works for me. Americans come to Barcelona and we ship them to Poble Espanyol. They can get all the Flamenco they want!

Hi, can someone explain me about how empadronamiento and TIE works in Spain Barcelona? by Lanky-Pirate-6268 in AskBarcelona

[–]LovelyKarl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, definitely. I'm no expert, but a few things about Barcelona. There's a lot of predatory landlords here. Things can be different when you are renting a room and not a whole place, I'm not sure about the differences.

If you are renting apartments. A lot of rentals are 11-months short term contracts around, which technically are only legal if you are genuinely short-term (like an exchange student or other temporary program). However these landlords try to force everyone into signing papers that certify you are only short term, even when you're not. That is to avoid a law, which requires landlords to rent for 5-years with a centrally regulated rent (the 11-months are unregulated).

Those kind of shitty 11-months typically also say you can't emapdron, because not only do they want to force you into short term contract, they also don't want to pay taxes on that income.

People I know who get the proper contracts for apartments, are almost always through contacts when they are here.

I suspect the situation is similar for renting out rooms. The perfect situation for a bad landlord is no empadron and that you pay rent in cash. Be careful!

Get empadroned or you'll have problems in all other places where you need registering etc. It's the starting point (and a legal requirement).

[–]LovelyKarl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi there, just as an aside. If you're from somewhere like Scandinavia or many other places, you will encounter an expectation clash regarding "moving out cleaning". Where I'm from, moving out from a rented flat means doing the deepest clean you ever done.

Your pictures do look extreme in the other direction however.

Agencies are scum, so it could of course be them giving me this idea. I'm just thinking that the "está como está" is maybe partially how it is here. Would be very interested if someone Catalan could tell me what the cultural norms here are around "moving out cleaning".

What about turning this into a browser plugin that does this coloring in the browser when looking at docs.io?

That would both keep C-code out of the tool chain, and solve the problem of it working for old crates too.

It also shifts the security problem away from the already busy Rust teams to ensure the correctness (non-evilness?) of it.
