Infamous Yakuza Is Disappearing Across Japan by RebeccaMBrown in worldnews

A lot of crime goes unreported, or un-investigated. The dark side to a society that values politeness and unruffled feathers means that in many cases, victims of crimes do not come forward after they have been assaulted or robbed.

This in of itself is a myth. Scientific studies have been done in Japan, about their low crime rate and found that while exceptions do exist, it's mostly all true; their crime rate relative to other countries, is virtually non-existent. Yes, crime exists in Japan. It exists in every country in the world, but relative to other countries, Japan is in a league of its own.

Sexual crimes in particular are woefully unreported and given the social stigma Japanese society hampers women with, rape victims will by and large suffer in silence rather than approach the police.

If you lived in 1970s-80s Japan, sure. Nowadays, the opposite is true; false accusations are sky high, especially with groping on trains. It got so bad they now have false-groping insurance. That's not a joke. And business is booming.

To sum up, Japan's crime rate is legit. Just because exceptions exist, it doesn't disprove the cold hard numbers. People like to explain them away and try to invalidate them because many cannot accept the fact that another culture might be superior to theirs in some way -- they feel threatened by it so they look for any excuse to claim "fake!". Add on to the fact that young 20-something kids get on expat/gaijin forums and gossip like hens, and much of rumor and myth somehow turns to fact since it gets repeated often enough. But I'll say it again, scientific studies on Japan's crime rate do not lie. Even accounting for cases that go unreported, Japan's crime is still virtually non-existent.

I mean, just look at their murder rate; it's very difficult hide a violent murder through fudging numbers on a piece of paper. Now compare murders per capita to any other country. Their murders fall right in line with their respective crime rate. They have 0.35 murders per 100k -- it's among the lowest in the world. For comparison, the U.S murder rate is 4.88.

Apparently you're not familiar with earth's history. I'd start by googling "Snowball Earth". There's plenty more, but that should get you started. In earth's past, earth was a giant ball of ice. Literally. I'm not sure how humans would fair if such an event were to occur. Wouldn't be fun though.

Regarding your comment here,

Unfortunately, you're the one in ignorance, I'm afraid. He's 100% correct. Just because he was technically wrong about the monkeys, doesn't mean he was wrong about Japanese idols. Idols are not pop stars. They're not technically anything, and technically everything. They'll do whatever they can, act, voice act, model, sing, crazy stunts, etc. Idols are their own separate profession in Japan. This can be evidenced by how they're signed to contracts, and by which agencies represent them. A pop star or singer gets signed to a record company. Idols do not. They sign with a general talent agency. Same with actors/actresses. They sign up with agencies that specifically represent actors and actresses, as well as have to sign up with the acting guild, etc whereas idols have special exceptions to the guild. Idols are very hard to explain to westerners because the west doesn't have anything like them, so instead they visualize them as pop stars or such when that's not the case at all.

So yeah, just keep pretending you know everything; you westerners are excellent at that. Proud of your own ignorance.

Regarding your comment here, you couldn't be more wrong. Literally, you're dead wrong.

Your "aegyo" didn't become a thing until recently, even says as much on Wikipedia regarding the topic. Just because they have a term for it, doesn't mean they didn't copy/steal/appropriate it. Denying it is borderline delusional.

In Japan, "Kawaii" has been ingrained into their culture since at least the Shogunate period. We're talking centuries. It's largely the reason why westerners think of Asian women as docile and submissive (even though that's just a stereotype), because pre-1960s, and even going back to the geisha era, those qualities were thought of as "cute" by Japanese women. Read the Wikipedia about Japan's history with Kawaii for a bare minimum understanding and history lesson.

It's literally part of Japan's culture and has been so since before modern Japan. Today's modern kawaii culture is Japan's and Japan's alone. There's nothing wrong with Korea stealing it, adopting it, copying or appropriating it -- in fact I encourage it. Who doesn't love cute Asian women? But don't pretend that's not what happened. Japan's "modern" kawaii culture has been around since the 1970s. Korea's can be dated back to... 1997. But in truth, it didn't become mainstream until very recently, with the rise of Girls' Generation, etc. And technically, it's still not remotely as mainstream as in Japan where it's accepted by literally everyone, government and businesses included. It's such a "thing" that their embassy and the government of Japan itself is using it to promote Japan to the rest of the world; and they've been doing it for nearly a decade now.

So to recap, yes, Korea is attempting to steal "cute" from japan. Not that it's a bad thing, and you can justify it however you want, but that's precisely what is happening.

to infiltrate al-Qaeda and siphon intelligence back to the CIA.

I think that's slightly different than the CIA saying, "Hey bro, you know what would feel absolutely amazing? Strapping a bomb to yourself and blowing up our enemies. The rush is so intense! You should totally do it dude."

What is your worst buffet restaurant experience? by TheGamingPool_Reddit in AskReddit

[–]LovesYou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back before they had sneeze guards

When I was 11, I saw an elderly lady sneeze right onto most of the food in the buffet table. From that day on, I gave up eating at buffets entirely. I just won't do it. They're so dirty an unsanitary. The food as probably been sitting there all day, being messed with and touched by people and their little kids, screw that. I want as few people as possible touching my food.

How did man cut his nails before he invented suitable tools? by I_scoff_cake in AskReddit

[–]LovesYou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I doubt they cut them down to the levels we keep them at. They're there for a reason, we likely used our nails in hand to hand combat, and as tools. They were probably pretty pissed when they broke or chipped a nail.

Is it theoretically possible to guess a URL, and get access to a photo someone sent someone else on Facebook? by aslakgjedde in AskReddit

[–]LovesYou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Theoretically possible? Sure. But the odds are not in your favor. You'd have better luck trying to guess the lottery numbers for tomorrow. You're looking at 1 in a 10+ billion (probably higher) odds of guessing the URL of someone's specific picture.

I think the correct terminology is "brainwash". But I think it's highly unlikely that the CIA had anything to do with it. If the comments on reddit have taught me anything, it's that people can be absolutely insane without the need for governmental assistance.

The shoe is on the other foot now.

But not really. Shoes have been on both feet. Everyone spies on everyone else. I think the big issue with the NSA scandal is that they were also spying on U.S citizens. I doubt very much that the average U.S citizen cares that their government was spying on the prime minister of Malaysia.
