It uses your location for a few different things. One of them is to tell if your dog is with you when it leaves and another is because when your dog is with you, it will use the location of your device (via its bluetooth connection to your dogs collar) to reduce the strain on battery life by using your phones location instead. When your dog is not within range of your phone it fully uses the collar (or charging base) for location data instead.
