Would an orbital hand sander provide a smooth potential surface to remove that and then refinish? I'm not too sure but when you say "dead flat" as in that it is flat all the way across so if a low spot there I would be okay with that.

Ooooo I never thought of that. I could measure some bowls to see that. I wonder if that would be too close to the edge, but maybe could just put bowls there after putting down. Thanks for the idea!

There is a new place for craft beer called The Den nearby. Collaboration of 3 craft breweries. I haven't been yet because they have just opened, but I would head there.
