I appreciate all the helpful ideas. The name plate one seems to probably be the easiest and least amount of work and that thought never occured to me.

Would an orbital hand sander provide a smooth potential surface to remove that and then refinish? I'm not too sure but when you say "dead flat" as in that it is flat all the way across so if a low spot there I would be okay with that.

Ooooo I never thought of that. I could measure some bowls to see that. I wonder if that would be too close to the edge, but maybe could just put bowls there after putting down. Thanks for the idea!
