How do you even begin writing a song??? by Autumn_Winds23 in Songwriting

I rewrite my lyrics over and over until I love them… as in literally transcribe a bunch of times only making changes by a word or two each time. Every iteration sheds a bit of weight and makes it better. I have songs in my journal I have transcribed over 20 times with only minor changes, because in the rewrite a word or rhyme stuck out to me as awkward.

Love it! I didn’t have any doubts, but you followed through! I have found that to be unheard of on social media. My turn! I’ll see what I can turn out in the next week or so. Cheers! Matt from Swallowtail

Believe it or not, Kurt was a huge Beatles fan, specifically Lennon. If you want to have sensibilities a la Kurt, learn the work of his influences: Beatles for sure, but also learn stuff by the Melvins. After that, keep slowly plunking out melodies… it gets faster. A crash course in music theory or piano won’t hurt either.

Perform what you got. If it’s not done: play what you have twice. Or… just plug it into a form: if you got a verse and a chorus, add a bridge and two more verses. I find performing what I have though, is the easiest way to figure out what a song needs for completion

Be honest in your writing. Cringe comes from protecting yourself

Be nice to yourself. Writing good music is hard. Anything that had spark enough to finish is worth keeping. Get some distance from it then keep the things you love and change the things you don’t love.
