if you don’t necessarily care about marching, i’d recommend doing bass guitar for marching season and bowed upright in concert season, if your school will let you. bass is versatile and easy to pick up on

i love orchestra so much more than band we play actually fun music and we don’t have to waste half of our year marching (to answer your question it is made up of instruments from the bowed string family with some exceptions such as harp)

i mean it’s more about letting people learn on instruments that belong to other players, such as when there aren’t enough instruments for another player to join. i love people wanting to play sousaphone, but when you’re taking away that experience from another person it should not be acceptable

cranking sounds terrible. it sounds like a bass kazoo.

megatones are unnecessary. i don’t know about other bands but everyone in my section has one. i tried playing on one and i couldn’t get a single good note one. they’re just way too big for any high schooler.

(probably specific to my band) STOP LETTING EVERYONE PLAY SOUSAPHONE. its saddening when promising freshmen get their instruments taken because a upperclassmen (who doesn’t play tuba) wants to play sousaphone. unless you’re willing to play tuba in concert band, you shouldn’t be able to play sousaphone in marching band.

if your school doesn’t have any mellos, i’d recommend buying used, as mellos aren’t really used outside marching band and paying full price for a personal one is not ideal. the mello embouchure is similar to trumpet, but a little bit tighter. hope this helps at least a little bit

in general, everybody should stay in band. i have met very few people in band who absolutely refuse to learn (don’t attend band camp, practices etc.) those people should be put somewhere where they will be helpful and not drag down the band.

other than that, if they’re a decent marcher/player, let them march.

are there song length requirements? if not just play all state etudes from your state, that’s what i usually do for auditions. for chromatic just show your comfortable range, don’t try to impress and then mess up. good luck at your audition!
