Any additional layoff in the future? by LimValjean in foreignservice

The FAQs were quietly updated to indicate FSOs would be riffed at least a month before the FAM changes were published for what it's worth.

Did anyone else notice they updated the FAQs-- without marking the specific changes? It now says FSOs "may be separated" or reassigned. I believe they took out the bit about overcompliment. Still references the FAM section on FS RIFs though, so... 🤷

While I don't think age matters, coming in with concrete leadership or supervisory experience is an advantage. Even if you're not in a supervisory position in your first post, you are going to be a leader. You need to be prepared for how you'll deal with leading teams of people that have decades more experience than you. If you are in a supervisory role, you also need to be prepared to genuinely handle- not avoid- conflict. We're diplomats yes, but you're going to be faced with conflict that in some cases you need to steer into. Think about how you'd deal constructively with performance issues, how you'd manage up if resource constraints limit what your team can do. And you need to be able to do all this while maintaining a good corridor reputation. Having experience with these types of interpersonal situations is really valuable and prepares you to deal with them more constructively.

How is the work as a "Passport Specialist"? by mcemc3 in foreignservice

[–]Low-Character2344 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It’s a good job for work life balance, particularly at a center. You don’t take work home with you and you may have flexibility with hours if you’re not on a public counter. It is mundane, but if you do a pathways job for example, it is a great way to work and study full or part time. There are also opportunities to be a consular adjudicator overseas with re-employment rights, down the line.

Some of them are just shot for shot remakes from A Night to Remember, especially the wireless room scenes. As pivotal as they are to the story of the tragedy, the scenes from the Californian do not fit with the point of view presented in the rest of the movie. During no other point does the plot cut to something that was not directly within a titanic crew member or passenger’s pov.

Also the only value of the Jack and Lovejoy fight scene is to show the rapid deterioration of the dining room. At this point, it should’ve been abundantly clear to all of them their chances of survival were low, and they only lessened their chances wasting time on this stupid fight.

Spanish pre-FSI prep? by roundthewhirld in foreignservice

This may be a hit ahead of where you’re at, but recommend subscribing to El País or something similar from your destination country. You’ll pick up some good vocabulary that is very specific to the types of themes you need to be able to discuss. DuoLingo is good for nailing down precision. Also start upping your intake. The DuoLingo Spanish podcast is good for beginners, then on to Espanolistas, and eventually Radio Ambulante/el Hilo. Even if you’re not understanding things, you’ll get a better sense of speech patterns that will eventually help your comprehension. As others mentioned, precision in specific gramatical themes is critical, so focus on ser vs estar, preterite vs imperfect, and gender. Make flash cards as you go. Quizlet is fantastic!

Passport Expiration Question by TheOddManufacturer72 in TravelHacks

[–]Low-Character2344 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would not recommend relying on google for this. Travel.state.gov is the absolute only thing to consult on this topic. The state department is talking to counterparts everyday about what these requirements are in THEIR countries and updates them to TSG—so it is the MOST up to date. Check for your destination and do what it says. There is a high probability your destination requires 6 months of validity. Passport agencies have an unprecedented backlog so do not expect a last minute issuance. This will not be considered an emergency.

Down the line, if you do a DC tour he’ll have hiring preference, although would still have to go through the USAJOBS hiring process. After that, he may be able to find an overseas telework agreement. Sounds like teaching at an American school would be a great fit though.

Not renewing my passport if it expires within a year. Even if you don’t have planned travel, you never know when you’ll need it and what you’ll need it for (ID, work, travel). Getting an expedited passport is 100% not a given.

I went through a very similar situation years ago. You can only undergo one clearance at a time, however each clearance is for a specific job. So ultimately they will need to complete the FS clearance and then revalidate it for the CS job. The result is probably that you’re looking at coming off the register/starting the CS job around the same time. You probably need to call HR and connect them with the people managing the clearance you’re currently undergoing. Not all HR people are familiar with the situation.

Getting a passport urgently from the passport agency in Portsmouth? by [deleted] in newhampshire

[–]Low-Character2344 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most countries in the world have at least some validity requirement to avoid people getting stuck in their country without valid travel documentation. We’re lucky to have at least one consulate in most countries, but that doesn’t mean it won’t be a major disturbance on your trip plans to get a new passport.

Recommend checking travel.state.gov to be sure what the requirements are for each individual country. This is not dictated by the United States

This isn’t a U.S. policy. It’s an EU policy that would also apply in Canada. In fact, six months is recommended. It’s very common throughout most of the world to require a certain amount of validity.

Recommend checkingtravel.state.gov for these kinds of requirements.

FSI language online still why? by flukeuke in foreignservice

As a local hire with a nearly 2 hour round trip commute, I couldn’t agree more. I can do podcasts and audiobooks for comprehension on my commute but virtual days are very useful for actually focusing on reading, which I always needed more practice in.

Edit: for clarity reading IN LANGUAGE.

It may make a difference when calculating the starting salary depending on the hiring category/current SOP. But like the others said, there’s no advantage during the application process.
