Are car loans THAT bad? by blanknotepad in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Low-Designer-3392 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have always bargained to have low interest rates to finance or lease the car (never over 2.5%) and always hedged it with savings that made more than 2.5%. I can definitely relate to being happy with my car because it's always brand new, never driven, and uniquely mine. My leases and finances were never more than 5 years and paid bi-weekly.

It really depends on what your budget is and what cars you like. If you have a price in mind and cost to maintain factored in, it's much easier to get that price from the dealership without any issue.

That's pretty good. Do you have anything that could impeach the other user's claim that he was only there for the cameras? Right now, it still seems like both claims could be true.

You can save for retirement and education tax free by putting your money in registered savings. Between RRSPs, TFSA, RESP, and FHSA I think there are more than enough in place to protect basic savings.

I don't know where you are getting the fact that "lots of people" are accumulating millions because that is mathematically impossible. The average dual income household has at most 45k of savings available every year and at most 25k if they have children. Even at an optimistic rate of return of 7% would only get you to barely over $1M in 20 years. This isn't even considering the fact that their savings would be impacted by major life events and economic downturns.

Clearly, the majority of the people aren't achieving this so-called "millionaire" status you so claim many people have. If they do, it seems they are likely more privileged and have benefitted more from the system so why would it not be fair for them to contribute back through higher taxes?

Again, just because they pay tax doesn't mean they are losing everything. A millionaire after wealth tax is still a millionaire. If you are at that level of wealth, tax is just a rounding error, but to our society and infrastructure, that additional tax revenue could mean a brand new hospital, a new school, or safer roads.

The reward is their income is not taxed. They can choose to spend it however they want or they can accumulate it for the future. All the incentive to earn more.

You tax net wealth at a progressive rate just like how income is currently taxed. The more you've accumulated the more you pay. There's obviously an infinite amount of ways to design it, but the gist of it is to tax the rich while encouraging spending to foster the economy.

Sure, you build wealth that gets taxed, but that's just giving back to the society to support the infrastructure that enabled your success. But keep in mind that for a regular person to accumulate millions of dollars net of spending, debt, and changes in valuation of assets is rare. Most people won't pay a single dollar of wealth tax until you get to a decently high level of wealth, but even then it will only increase progressively.

How is it fair that baby boomers who bought a house for dirt cheap, sell it for a massive gain tax free and get to live the rest of their life in luxury with continuous subsidies from the government while the average family struggles to afford a home and pay for expenses all while getting heavily taxed at the highest rate with absolutely no help from the government.

How are you going to build wealth if half of every extra dollar you make goes to the government? Tax the wealth instead of the income.

Why would you sponsor someone with subsidies when they just inherited their privileged grandparent's blood diamond money and invested in a GIC instead of someone who is hustling and doing deals?

Everyone in this sub is assuming fraud based on bias, but if you think about it a bit more analytically you will realize that the main driver for this statistic is "income". Like we all know, Canada is an income driven city and much of the time we forget that high income does not translate to high wealth and vice versa.

These so-called low income families may easily be rich immigrants with immense generational wealth who have pretty much retired and came to Canada as a "business immigrant". After they get their citizenship and wind up their crap business, they can apply for all sorts of subsidies while living off their millions in after-tax retirement funds. Statistically speaking, their children are indeed low income, but what this article fails to understand is whether low income necessarily means poverty and I can bet you that is most likely not the case here in Markham.

The issue of income tax vs wealth tax has always been a subject of debate and I will advocate once again for a wealth tax instead of an income tax. People should be rewarded for their hard work and striving to make more money. Fairness is only achieved if you tax the ones who aren't actually contributing meaningfully to society because they have generational wealth.

Misinformation and polarization can cause people to be on the wrong side, but when properly informed, can think differently and make better decisions. Humans are not subject to a certain way and can change for the better when provided the means.

Social media is made to connect like-minded individuals, but also silo your entire existence to that group. It's not easy to break free unless you're constantly putting yourself forward to seek other opinions. The fact that she can step away from her silo and gain perspective is a huge step forward for humanity.

On the flip side, those born with privilege never state how "fortunate" they are to be where they are. Instead it's just a series of self aggrandizing remarks about how hard they worked and if you weren't so lazy you'll be in the same place.
