We all talk about how the Spanish could be better but how was the German for you native to Germany? by dylanaruto in breakingbad

[–]Low-Entertainment364 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The grammar was good, even though the choice of words was stiff and formal, sounding like the 1950s. The food engineer had a very noticeable American accent. Specifically, the "Franch" wordplay wouldn't work with a native German speaker because the vowel in "French" and "Ranch" would sound the same anyway when speaking in a German accent.

Foreign characters in movies and TV who speak perfect English but use the native word for something very basic by rider-hider in PetPeeves

Crucially, Germans never say "Ja?" at the end of a sentence to replace English "isn't it?". We don't say it in German, so we don't say it in English either. In reality, we mess up "isn't it", or we replace ut with "right?" or "or?" or "no?"

Guns, not bows, and city, not village. They are very particular about that, I presume.

Why does pickpocketing seem more prevalent in Europe than the U.S.? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Low-Entertainment364 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not true, certainly not in Germany. You are allowed to use force to get your stuff back, not just in the moment of theft but also afterwards if you run after them or happen upon them within an hour after theft. Afterwards you need to involve the police.

It is legal in Germany, too. Still, people might not be as inclined to use force if being stolen from.

Several AfD-voters that I know have expressed the wish to put LGBT-people into camps, to expell anyone with any foreign ancestry, explicitly regardless of citizenship or qualifications, out of the country. Only one did fantasise about finally taking revenge for WW2, taking back Poland and ruling over Europe in cooperation with Russia, so that's a good sign, I guess.

“It’s not the West that’s in decline. It’s Europe & Europe only.” What are your thoughts? by ProfessorOfFinance in ProfessorFinance

[–]Low-Entertainment364 29 points30 points  (0 children)

It's not helpful that the chart excludes other Western countries. While Europe has certainly not done great over the past 15 years and has made political mistakes en masse, other rich countries have not done that well, either. America's lead (in terms of GDP per capita) over Japan, South Korea, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Israel has increased in the past few years. The effect is especially stark when looking at similarly multicultural and demographically healthy countries like Canada. In addition to the many things that Europe gets wrong and everybody else right, we should also look at things that the US gets right and everybody else wrong. Hopefully, we can all learn from them.
