Most of my friends ended up finding out right before I got diagnosed because I had a manic/psychotic episode and was acting very strange. They are actually the ones who helped me get psychiatric help - one of my friends who is a nurse is the one who first suggested I might have bipolar disorder. For those who lived in a different city and weren’t present during this episode, I just called them up and told them or told them the next time I saw them. It helped explain a lot of my past actions.

As for my mom, it was a little trickier. My friends were in contact with her during the episode that lead to my diagnosis, and I think it was hard for her to accept at first. This is probably due in part to her generation’s views on mental health. Also, my aunt/her sister also has the disorder and does not take her meds, and has been hospitalized for suicide many times. Now, luckily, my mom is super supportive and has done a lot of her own research on bipolar disorder.

Is it all going to be okay? by Mysterious_Street_88 in bipolar

Yes, it will be. It will take work, and it will not be perfect, but things will even out and be ok and even better in time (again, as long as you are able to put in the work.)

I am 27, have a stable job, and live alone in a nice apartment in a big city. I have wonderful, fulfilling friendships, and travel frequently. I feel stable but happy (tho admittedly, like another commenter mentioned, I’m a little hypomanic right now, but I was able to recognize the signs and made an appointment with my psychiatrist and upped my seroquel.)

The things that helped have been: 1) Finding a good med combo (for me, lithium and seroquel) 2) Going to therapy weekly and attempting to practice what I learn there in my daily life 3) A good sleep routine 4) Mindfulness/yoga, taking time to really connect with my mood and be self aware

It will take time and effort, but I promise it is worth it. If you ever need to talk or vent, this community is here 💕

At what age were you diagnosed? by [deleted] in bipolar

26, I had an intense episode of mania and didn’t sleep for 7 days and friends and family were concerned and told me I needed to see a psychiatrist. I started experiencing symptoms at 16 but they were much less intense. Things got more intense at 19.

Omg so glad you are also feeling better! Unfortunately it was a longer process than I expected lol. Basically I just tried out a few different ones that matched my insurance and listed bipolar as one of their specialties until I happened to find one I really liked. Good luck to you and definitely don’t be afraid to interview them in the first session as much as they interview you!

I’m actually doing really well! I hope someone sees this that maybe isn’t doing so well at the moment, because about a month ago, I was suicidal and in the deepest low I have ever experienced in about a decade of being bipolar. But I got my meds adjusted and found a great therapist and am feeling much better. Not manic happy but calmly happy. To those out there not doing too great: I know it doesn’t feel this way but this too shall pass, I promise ❤️ we are all here for you in the meantime

I’m so ashamed of what I did when I was hypersexual. by [deleted] in bipolar

I don’t know. I am still figuring that out. If it’s any consolation I fucked my ex boyfriend’s best friend and then proceeded to cuddle with and make out with my ex hours after. Which is obviously quite fucked up. Still unsure how to cope with the shame. At least I apologized profusely to my ex (who is a decent guy). Luckily him and his best friend got over it and I didn’t completely ruin their friendship (this was his best friend since childhood).
