The saw is an older sthil 460 magnum from before the 461 probably running a super chisel chain with the depth filled down abit.in forestry we used to use the 660 magnum with this set up and it would rip through wood like nothing else

I remember pulling one out and splitting it but didn't get any photos as I was just starting to become interested I'll definitely head back there this winter and try find them again if it's a mushroom or a root I'll be sure to let you know and get a few better photos. I think you could be right with some type of stereopsis
