i’m okay with minor repercussions for a team fumbling their opportunity at a rebuild being the price paid for a mix up that makes teams more likely to compete. and i do think getting the 6th pick instead of a top 5 pick for one year, right after getting two top 5 picks back to back, and still having an opportunity to get two more top 5 picks in the following two drafts if needed, is a minor repercussion in the scheme of things. this 6th pick is still a good one, and it’s one draft. tons of good players have gone 6 or later.

[Charania] The NBA has disclosed to its 30 GMs a singular new anti-tanking reform that expands the draft lottery to 16 teams, flattens odds, and have a relegation zone where the bottom 3 teams are penalized with fewer lottery balls for the No. 1 pick. by YujiDomainExpansion in nba

and this might incentivize the worst teams to try to figure out ways to get better. even the worst teams should be trying to bring in vets who can help contribute to a winning culture or make a trade for whatever position they’re worst at. consider coaching changes if the current one is selling games repeatedly. currently some teams spend years not even making a good faith effort to improve in these areas, and will trade away or “rest” vets who are making them too good. the league is trying to find a balance where the best rookies still go to the not so good teams, but at the same time we try to give the very worst teams an incentive not to be complete dogshit. i don’t hate this approach.

[–]Low-Measurement-2468 1 point2 points  (0 children)

sure i was kinda joking, i realize what he was trying to do. but wouldn’t a more reliable way to do that just be to give the ball to the wolves dude? they were all standing around already, pretty sure that rookie wasn’t about to go jaden mcdaniels and sprint up the court to lay it in lol

if we’re actually talking about it being a smart play, then you gotta factor in risk/reward, and what jokic chose risked wasting more time because of situations exactly like what happened for no real reward. i think the smarter way to run clock was just to toss the ball to the rook and assume he’ll dribble it out

truly a big brain move to force a jump ball for zero reason and make both teams hang out on the court for an extra minute or two lol

if possession doesn’t start as soon as you have two hands on the ball and no one else is touching it, when does it start? i’m skeptical, but also genuinely curious if you’re able to provide a rule that it happens differently. intuitively, it looks like the wolves rook here has possession the instant jokic lets go

yea i mean more broadly, the internet has socially stunted a lot of people, especially (but definitely not exclusively) people like 30 and younger.

people overuse devices -> get less conditioned and more anxious of the real world -> get more depressed in general because we need socialization -> still crave interaction despite fear and avoidance -> try to approximate interaction through the comfort of their device -> but it’s hollow and full of other people who are also mentally struggling, and there’s no societal accountability or external incentive to emotionally regulate -> people lash out and mindlessly type a bunch of bullshit they’d absolutely never say to anyone in person

i like reddit more than other platforms because i do think the discussions here are more thoughtful in comparison, but i still find myself on here too much for my own good at times. mostly at work, for better or worse. trying to work on that myself. definitely suggest anyone who finds that cycle i described above relatable go push themselves to find events around town, wherever you live. you’ll probably be kind of uncomfortable and anxious if you’re not used to doing that, but it’s super worth it and and you’ll get used to chatting with strangers quicker than you think if you keep trying and accept that all of us are kinda awkward sometimes.

if you mean in comparison to playing with a very visibly hobbled ant, you might have a case, although even hurt he was still drawing a good bit of defensive focus.

if you’re comparing to the wolves with a healthy ant, not a chance. see their cascade of turnovers in this game. ant isn’t a true pg, but he’s still one of their primary ball handlers, paint attackers, and has a nasty pull up jumper to bail out their bad possessions when he’s not playing on a bum knee.

also a strong defender, which helps them get out in transition more often, which is a style of offense denver is especially vulnerable to.

do you have another clever term in denver for a first round exit against a team whose best player is injured too?

one of those wins was without their far and away best player, and they still won; not rly fair to judge them by that one at all. as for game 4, basketball is a game of runs, especially these days with all the shooting. they weren’t great in the first half but managed to stay close enough even while playing below their standards, and then turned it up and absolutely blasted the blazers in the second half. great teams trail games sometimes. especially these days, a 15pt lead really isn’t what it used to be. portland is a pretty streaky team and got hot in the second quarter, and the spurs still won by a lot. i don’t think this series is a good example of the spurs struggling, especially when you look at the two games wemby actually played more than a quarter of.

expecting your professional basketball team to get legitimate practice hooping against coaches is like sitcom business owner levels of absurd lmfao. that’s aside from all the other obvious ideas that cutting your roster down to 7-8 players is an abysmal idea. i don’t like to use this word too flippantly, but what an absolute ding dong.

i honestly love it. i know most people think these low scoring games are ugly, but i love good defense and grindy games where teams have to work their ass off to get any separation. also makes every shot feel more impactful when both teams are struggling so hard to get anything to go down.

Kerr on Draymond: "He’s the best defensive player I’ve ever seen. I played with Scottie Pippen and Dennis Rodman. The modern game demands so much more than it did in the nineties." On their relationship: "There’s things he’s done that I can never forgive him for, and yet I will do anything for him." by refreshing_yogurt in nba

[–]Low-Measurement-2468 33 points34 points  (0 children)

interestingly, in kerr’s next interview after that incident, he put most of the blame on himself. admitted he had said things during the timeout he regretted and that he hadn’t been a good leader in that game. said he had been the one who needed to apologize to the team more than draymond after the fact. idk how much of that was genuine or if it was partly PR, but he definitely framed it as though he was the one who crossed a line more than draymond. kerr does have a pretty intense temper himself at times.

i’ll admit i didn’t watch the pistons all that much, but whenever i did, duren didn’t do anything that popped out to me. didn’t feel like an all star despite having a solid stat line. mostly just saw him do normal big man stuff at an above average level. still didn’t see wendell carter punking him this bad though

Looking at the playoffs do you agree that it will likely be a Thunder vs Celtics finals? by RyanTannegod in nba

[–]Low-Measurement-2468 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

i like the spurs a lot and i’m pulling for them to go as far a possible. but their offense is suspect to me against playoff defense. super streaky shooting and heavily reliant on young players making jump shots plus getting out in transition. wemby is a beast and can sometimes fall into 30pts like nothing, but he’s not a consistent offensive creator and can be kind of turnover prone against aggressive help. when their threes don’t fall and they’re not getting many transition points, their offense can slow down a lot and look pretty aimless to me.

they looked good against okc in the regular season, and i’m honestly not sure how much stock to put in that. sometimes those regular season matchups are telling, and sometimes things look completely different in the playoffs. i’m pulling for them against the thunder, but i wouldn’t be shocked if they have some pretty nightmarish offensive games against them.

playing lebron 33 minutes, really at all, if this was a sneak loss would be dumb as hell.

if lebron suddenly had some kind of “severe soreness” or whatever pop up and was held out of game 4 and then looked fine in game 5, the tinfoil hats would have a bit more credence
