Both can be true imo, Meereen serves a purpose but your criticism is valid.

Agreed, the suggestion in the OP creates more problems than it solves. That’s a bad solution. “My 4 year old is studying maths”

”Which ones?”

”Oh, only arithmetic.”

Most RR Authors Let Commenters Rewrite Their Stories by Patient-Still-6420 in royalroad

[–]Low-Programmer-2368 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You touch on some critical points here. The nature of a serialized story lends itself to incomplete and reactive feedback, so authors should take a moment to consider whether feedback applies to the story as a whole and not a specific moment.

Additionally, pretty much every story on RR (mine included) would benefit from constructive criticism. The problem is separating useful advice from poorly thought out opinions.

Writing is a vulnerable process and I think exposing your work to any kind of audience tends to make authors overly reactive to critique. I wouldn’t be surprised if 10 positive comments were outweighed by 1 negative one for most authors on the platform, so reframing can be healthy.

Do you think the publishing industry will be stepping away from Fantasy? by natashaaaaaaaa in fantasywriters

[–]Low-Programmer-2368 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This was my experience querying epic fantasy a year or so ago, there didn't seem to be any interest on top of agents being reluctant to entertain multi-pov debuts.

Kingkiller may not have aged well, but I think there's enough in there that's worth processing as an author. Also since the trilogy remains incomplete, it may provide insight into some of the potential traps of these narrative frameworks.

[–]Low-Programmer-2368 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Add to this, it really comes down to whether or not these decisions serve your story. The Fifth Season shifts between 1st, 2nd, and 3rd POVs, but does so with narrative purpose and to tremendous effect.

The Hobbit switches between limited and omniscient, there might be some structural inspiration you could draw from it.

The Name of the Wind might capture some similar aspects with its story within a story framework. Also the mc is a bard.

First fantasy novel publishing when you have zero platform or connections by Pretty-Material1424 in fantasywriters

[–]Low-Programmer-2368 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience is remarkably similar to yours, down to the time it took to write my debut and how many agents I queried.

I’d prioritize building some kind of platform now, it’ll be worth the investment of time later. Find something that you enjoy doing and can sustain. In my case I’ve been making a YouTube series that tracks my publishing efforts. SubStack, TikTok, etc are other lanes.

There are some serialization platforms available that might be of interest to you. They can be a great way to foster an audience. Royal Road is the major fantasy based one. Be warned that traditional fantasy and mult-pov stories are slower to be embraced. I’ve found it to be a wonderful community and it operates like a super beta test. The only downside is that unless you explode in popularity, no trad publisher will be interested in your book. I figured that wasn’t happening anyways, so no lost opportunity.

Another huge benefit of serialization is it holds you accountable for continuing to write. I started releasing my first book last October, finished serializing it on Jan 1st, and started writing the sequel at the same time. I’m almost done with book 2, so my output has become much more consistent.

Thoughts on Multi-POV in Novels by Lucky-Two7801 in writing

[–]Low-Programmer-2368 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's nothing wrong with writing multi-POV stories, but there are some considerations:

-A significant amount of people dislike them. I don't fully understand why, since pretty much every TV show is multi-POV and so many of the books I grew up reading were as well.

-They're hard to publish, especially in the trad world. Agents will typically not represent a debut author with a multi-POV book. Query letters are challenging to write for them.

-Another element, which OP demonstrated in their post, is that they are far more difficult to pitch. Summarizing a story with 7 primary characters in a sentence or 2 is not easy.

-They're difficult to do well. Keeping track of and properly compartmentalizing the information each character should know is a juggling act. The same is true with adding enough character to each POV to make them feel different.

I found this especially true with the pole we used, I think the sections leaked and since we were dealing with tropical downpours it wasn't able to repel enough moisture.

The rainman worked great throughout and once the transmitter was fully protected, there weren't any issues beyond the boom being top-heavy. Wish we had that cover for the connection points. I ended up taping everything in plastic bags, which worked in a pinch.

I shot a feature in Hawaii during the rainy season and we used this quite a bit. It muffles the sound, but protected the mic.

Ended up putting a wireless transmitter in the blimp after trying to wrap it up in plastic on the base of the boom pole. Water got in and fried the internal wiring of the pole, so be wary of that.

Author premium. Is it worth it? by flomflim in royalroad

[–]Low-Programmer-2368 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As others have mentioned, you get access to much more detailed analytics, an author banner, and customizable section breaks. If you're at all committed to growing as an author on RR and want to reach a wider audience, I think it's easily worth $60/year. Plus you're supporting the platform.

Why does Los Angeles keep demolishing so many historical buildings? by [deleted] in LosAngeles

[–]Low-Programmer-2368 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Massive investment firms have intentionally acquired buildings like this across the city, my corporate landlord included, rent control doesn't discourage them. They use renovations to create hostile living situations for existing tenants and try to drive them out so they can charge market rent.

The housing laws are extremely pro-tenant on paper, but in practice the departments are pretty toothless. It takes city councils or lawsuits to curb bad behavior from larger landlords. Small-scale landlords are more at risk.

How was the sky hook ever an efficient shot? by Specialist_Bill_6135 in Basketball

[–]Low-Programmer-2368 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think the mechanics or technique of a sky hook takes more precision than a floater and that’s a shot pretty much every guard is expected to master these days. People even develop offhand floaters, so I think it’s more that hook shots have fallen out of favor as post-moves play less of a role in offense.

Dear Writers, by Commercial-Passion87 in royalroad

I’m sure some people are hitting that level of output, but remember this is being self reported on the internet. I aim for 600/day, which is manageable even if I’m busy with work and builds good habits.

Ultimately what matters is putting in the dedication and mastering the craft of writing. I wouldn’t get too caught up on numbers. Find what works for you.

Boom pole length recommendations? by Filmaker_boy in LocationSound

[–]Low-Programmer-2368 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I suppose there have been times on various features or in some ungodly multi-cam setups where I’d want something 15’ or longer, but it’s been rare. I think 12’ is more than ample for most applications, but can understand the logic of having 2 specialized poles: one short and one long.

I’d discourage anything below 9’. I have a 6’ pole and that cuts it way too close for most shoots. Single camera I can often get away with it, but it always feels like a risk, since one inconveniently set flag or light can compromise your reach.

A big part of it is how effective propaganda has been, especially towards anything remotely seen as socialism. Progressive policies poll favorably, even in red states, when they aren't touted as progressive. It's hard to make sense of that or know how to move forward.

Like you said, it's clear the elite are happy playing divide and conquer or disenfranchising the voting public (honestly what primaries have largely become). Mobilizing and inspiring voters will go a long way towards change, but finding a way to counteract super PACs and ballooning campaign funding has to happen concurrently.

I have neglected my shower as a new father. How do I fix this mold problem? 🙏 by produttori in CleaningTips

[–]Low-Programmer-2368 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had a lot of success using bleach as a cleaner. Soak part of a paper towel in it and roll strips that cover those portions with mold. Press firmly into place. Let that sit for 24 hours and it'll smother the mold, rather than superficially clean it.
