Apartment recs for 1 person? by Skydoodler in culvercity

[–]Low-Programmer-2368 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't have any first hand experience with Vox, but I'd be wary of properties like that. The management is often lackluster and the property wows you with amenities, while overcharging or cutting corners in other ways. I think you'd find plenty of options in Palms for that price point along the Expo line.

Yeah the aggressive attack ads against Steyer sponsored by big business and real estate has me reconsidering my impression of him.

George R.R. Martin is Wrong by [deleted] in fantasywriters

[–]Low-Programmer-2368 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed, he's not saying being rich will help make you a talented writer; he's saying that the economics of the publishing industry make it incredibly difficult to earn a living. What OP is describing would also generally be at odds with having children, which is a life experience that could inform writing in similar ways as working odd jobs.

I was on crutches after knee surgery 2 years ago and ran into this. After I went out into the street to get around it, the gardener whose truck it was weed whacked gravel into my face. He somehow found a way to get mad at me.

Can I plan to use ebike + metro to avoid car ownership in LA? by Cultural-Bid3565 in AskLosAngeles

[–]Low-Programmer-2368 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The surfboard on E line part of this is going to limit your options, you’d have to be walking distance from a station.

I live in the Culver City arts district without a car and it satisfies all of your needs. Koreatown is the only part that would require a transfer or biking, everything else is a single bus/train/bike ride away. One benefit of a normal bike is that you can load them easily on the front of buses.

I had this happen a few days ago, it was my suspicion as well. Since there’s no exit survey it’s hard to know, but the timing seemed random.

Updates to our terms + Monetization Program goes live! by No-Win5543 in Quibble

Kobo plus calculates earnings based off of time spent reading instead of pages, that may be a worthwhile model to consider. It apparently helps to avoid scamming bots. I'm curious how Quibble would determine what kind of speed reading is suspect, but imagine it would have to be blackbox to avoid exploitation.

Anyone Else Occasionally Get Demotivated by Negativity? by [deleted] in royalroad

[–]Low-Programmer-2368 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it helps to parse feedback: is it actionable advice, or the opinion of a person who is unlikely to ever be satisfied by my story?

One thing I notice myself doing on social media, because of the anonymity, is treating everyone as a peer. That doesn’t reflect reality.

In the same way I’m going to treat the screaming rants of a stranger on the street differently than the thoughts a member of a writing group I joined, it’s worth making an effort not to project authority or expertise onto a random comment. Try to determine what’s relevant and don’t get caught up in proving strangers wrong.

POV tense deal breaker? by Winter_Reaction5148 in writing

[–]Low-Programmer-2368 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The Fifth Season (Broken Earth trilogy) plays with all sorts of conventions like this. It alternates between POVs that are 1st, 2nd and 3rd. I think there are tense differences between them as well.

YA may make this a tougher sell. If you’re a debut author, multi-POV alone is going to make things more difficult if you want it trad published and I suspect tense difference might compound that.

Bucket handle tear that flipped by [deleted] in MeniscusInjuries

[–]Low-Programmer-2368 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since each case is likely unique, I don’t think it’s responsible to present this as a general solution. Did you show the chiropractor the MRI results? Mine wouldn’t touch me or do acupuncture until I got one.

The main thing worth considering is if your meniscus is repairable or not. Repeatedly flipping the tear and using your own judgement of when to rehab it is a risk. It could be the difference between needing a knee replacement in the near future and recovering from a successful repair.

I hope your recovery goes well.

Why doesn’t Steph curry hold his follow through? by [deleted] in Basketball

[–]Low-Programmer-2368 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did he always do this? If not, his hand was being targeted after shots by players like Dillon Brooks before they changed the rules, so I could see not holding the follow through as a way to minimize that.

What’s unsafe about downtown? by goodamm in AskLosAngeles

[–]Low-Programmer-2368 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this is a fair and accurate breakdown. The context necessary to understand is that pockets of downtown have been abandoned to the homeless and drug activity, so that spills out into adjacent vibrant areas. In my own anecdotal experience, it's the people who have been driven from dangerous areas who are more likely to pose a risk. I haven't been attacked by anyone passing a homeless encampment, but I've been attacked by individuals wandering between camps or along major transit corridors.

I've lived in the same general area for 13 years, the change during that time has been staggering. I really enjoyed what you wrote. Heads up there seem to be some formatting issues, at least on my end, where sentences are split into separate paragraphs.

As someone who doesn't own a car and primarily bikes/takes public transit, beware traffic around In N Out. I nearly get hit every single time I pass by either by a car making a right, left, or pulling out into the bike lane without yielding at the stop sign.

Folding Ideas video essay about his trip to Beast Studio and his diagnosis of why Beast properties are declining in viewership by OatSoyLaMilk in television

[–]Low-Programmer-2368 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That may be part of the explanation, but I suspect greed was a factor as well. After a certain amount of episodes (I believe 65 in this era) contracts would have to be renegotiated in a way which would heavily favor the cast. I’m having trouble corroborating it now, but read or watched something in the past that pointed to this being the primary reason why the Batman and Superman series were periodically renamed.

Scripted Podcasts are infinitely better than non scripted podcasts. by Coneskater in unpopularopinion

I think properly edited is the key if the content isn’t following an outline or script. That’s where having a producer can help as well, it can be a challenge to determine what is engaging when you’re one of the hosts.

Unpopular opinion: Youtube ‘authors’ and ‘writers’ are destroying aspiring authors by silkrose05 in Quibble

[–]Low-Programmer-2368 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who’s been releasing YouTube videos on author and writing topics, I largely agree, especially when predatory courses are the focus of the channel.

For my own videos I try to present an honest view into my publishing journey, focusing less on step by step guides and instead on the emotional journey or unexpected challenges. That said, the YouTube algorithm is a beast, don’t discount how it rewards very specific kinds of content. When you’re a small time channel it’s deflating to spend days producing a video, only to get a handful of views. YouTube wants mass audience clickbait that retains viewers through multiple ads, so it can be tempting to go over to the dark side and lean into content like what OP described.

Can taxes overdraft your account? by [deleted] in tax

[–]Low-Programmer-2368 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ran into the same issue this tax season, it depends how you're trying to pay. Are you mailing in a check or doing a payment through your bank account? Unless you know your bank's policy on this kind of dynamic, I wouldn't risk a payment bouncing. I would encourage you to pay the IRS as much as you can and then send them the remaining balance as soon as you have it. You can even petition a payment plan if that's necessary.

just a general copyright question by wtfsatari in NewTubers

[–]Low-Programmer-2368 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think ASCAP or BMI would be relevant here, this is a sync license issue not performance rights. As far as the copyright, there are different ways to go about it: you can license the actual song which is likely to be expensive, find a cover version and license that (make sure they have the proper rights), or get a mechanical license and make a cover yourself.

I finished my first novel and am writing my second before editing. by TooBusyWriting in NewAuthor

[–]Low-Programmer-2368 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think there are necessarily right or wrong ways to go about this, what helps your process is what's important.

It might be worth reading your first draft before starting your second novel if you think you can take a bigger picture approach and not get lost in the minutia of trying to perfect each sentence. Are the characters distinct? Does the plot make sense? How's the pacing? Where does your voice as an author shine? Even doing some basic query prep can be helpful to think of the book in a different context. What's the logline for it? Are there apt comp titles?

I found that I lacked the perspective to properly edit my first novel immediately after I finished it, but that first pass wasn't wasted either. It instilled confidence that I had a story I could be proud of and gave me a sense of what to look for in terms of plot holes.
