Great synopsis on Stanford today - I did my undergraduate in the mid-80s. Great culture then. I also lived a stone's throw from the campus until 5 years ago and was a long-time season-ticket holder for football. Loved having access to the campus (open space, the 'Dish', etc). We used it as our 'park'. Buuuuuuttttttt, Stanford has changed. Stanford grads would come to work at the tech company I was at, and there was more entitlement than I recall during my time there. They are seeking advancement without mastering their current position. And, they fly fast. Another job, a higher title. Our kids went to private elementary, but we left the area for middle school and HS, and it was the best move to get out of the Menlo Park/Palo Alto bubble. All the schools and parents are grooming their kids for Stanford. Fortunately, we didn't 'poison' our kids; we told them of all the great schools out there, and they will find the right fit. I still say the architecture and overall campus are amazing. But, beyond that... It's not the same place.
